March 15th, Keiser University celebrated another successful Student Apprecia-tion Day with food, music, fun, games and prizes! This event had a St. Patty’s Day theme and included dancing and fun games provided by our DJ such as: Name that Tune, a Hula-Hoop Contest, Limbo, Water Balloon Toss and much more! Sev-eral students won prizes which included DVDs, gift cards and other St. Patrick’s Day gifts. The Department of Student Services would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time to this spectacular event. It could not have been a success without the volunteering students, faculty and staff.

Real-Life Resume Blunders to Avoid Provided by Robert Half International Nearly every professional has produced at least one resume in his or her quest for employment, but even the most experienced workers sometime stumble with the finer points of resume construction. The good news is that you can learn from the mis-takes of others. Following are some real-life goofs — dubbed “Resumania” by Robert Half International’s founder, Robert Half — collected by the company over the years. You’ll also find tips for avoiding these blunders. Troublesome Typos • “I often use a laptop.” • “I will accept nothing less than $28 annually.” In a Robert Half survey, 84 percent of executives polled said it takes just one or two typographical errors in a resume to remove a candidate from consideration from a job opening. Hiring managers view your resume as an indication of your attention to detail, and a mistake will convince potential employers you lack it. So after running your computer’s spell-check function, ask a friend to review your application materials. Sharing Too Many Secrets • “Interests: Running, editing video, cooking, writing and wondering.” • “Able to the ABCs backward in under five seconds.” Hiring managers often have dozens of resumes to review and appreciate being able to scan them quickly. If you include unnecessary information — such as your hobbies, marital status or personal trivia — potential employers may simply bypass your application. Omit details that don’t directly demonstrate how you can benefit the employer, and tailor each document to the specific company and position. Overly Casual Conversation • “If you hire me, U will not have any regrets!” • I don’t have a phone 4 the time being. Please email me instead.” Remember that you’re writing a professional document to be read by a prospective employer, not dashing off a quick email or text message to a friend. Hiring managers will use your resume to gauge your level of professionalism, so steer clear of informal language, unconventional acronyms and emoticons. Tech Transgressions Before you hit the send button, check to make sure you’ve attached the correct document. For example, one candidate sent an e-mail addressed to a competing firm. Another applicant submitted a fact sheet about California’s population instead of his resume. Also check the labels you give the documents. Files with generic or informal names can get lost on a hiring manager’s hard drive or cause a prospective employer to doubt your professionalism. Using your full name as a label is much better than “Oh Boy.doc” or “Hey there.doc” — both real examples, by the way. Last but not least, it’s best to forego smoke and mirrors. You don’t want to leave hiring managers scratching their heads, like the following applicant surely did: “I am a wedge with a sponge taped to it. My purpose is to wedge myself into someone’s door to absorb as much as possible.” Robert Half International is the world’s first and largest specialized staffing firm with a global network of more than 350 offices throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. FRENCH STUDENTS VISIT KEISER UNIVERSITY, FT. LAUDERDALE

By: Thomas Ertner, Associate Dean of General Education On April 19, twenty-six students and three teach-ers from the Lycée de L’Estran in Brest, France, visited the Ft. Lauderdale campus of Keiser Uni-versity. The visit was part of their one-week stay in South Florida. The students, ages 20 to 22, are in the Section de Technicien Supérieur and study sales and market-ing. Over the two years of their study, the stu-dents organized a number of events and sold chocolates and vin de Touraine to fund their travel to the USA. The purpose of the visit was twofold: to learn about American business and to sightsee. At Keiser, the students first viewed the Keiser 30th Anniversary video and asked questions about the American educational system and Keiser University’s academic programs. The students were then divided into three groups and sat with Keiser students from marketing, economics, and management classes. In the discussion groups, French and American students asked and answered questions about each other’s economies, societies, and cultures. The students were then invited to a typical American “working luncheon.” After lunch, Mme Régine Briand, the group leader, presented Mrs. Evelyn Keiser with a book on Brittany. The French group was also welcomed by Applied Card Systems (ACS) in Boca Raton. ACS has earned a reputation as an industry leader and innovator in the marketing and servicing of a variety of credit products. This was of particular interest to the French group. The students were given a tour of the facilities and presentations about ACS. When they return to France, the teachers will use the information they received in their lessons. The group rounded out their South Florida visit with a day trip in the Everglades, a Sawgrass Mills shopping trip, and a boat ride in Miami Bay. They also spent time, of course, at the beach. Of their visit, Mme Briand writes, “It has taught our students a great deal; it has given some of them a little confidence, and it has certainly contributed to the very high opinion students and teachers have of ‘the Americans’!”

The “Student of the Month” for April is Melanie Davis of the Crime Scene Technology Program. Melanie is a full-time night student who is currently working two jobs while balancing her work at Keiser University. She is a single mother of two, who works over 200 hours every 2 weeks and has never let her grades suffer. Melanie is an extremely dedicated student and will be graduating this July with honors. She only has three classes left to complete her Associate of Science Degree in CST. When Melanie was asked why she chose to become a student at Keiser, she replied “because I want to pursue a career in Forensic Technology.” She also made her choice based on Keiser University’s accelerated schedule which offers one class each month. She said, “The classes are structured to accommo-date working professionals. I like how the schedule allows you to focus on one class at a time, too.” When Melanie was asked where she sees herself in the next 5 years, she responded, “Working in the field as a forensic sci-entist.” Congratulations to Melanie Davis on her tremendous accomplishments from everyone at Keiser University - Fort Lauderdale Campus!

The Medical Lab Technician Program will be celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (1) one week earlier this month due to a schedule conflict with Easter Break. Students from the MLT Program will be having a Bake Sale starting April 9th in the 1st Floor Lobby and also raffling off a “Dinner for Two” at Carini’s in Hallandale. For more details on entering the Raffle, please inquire the MLT Students or Faculty in the “baby-blue scrubs” on campus. In this 32nd year of celebrating and honoring clinical / medical laboratorians, it is important to reflect on the important history of National Medical Laboratory Week (NMLW). NMLW originated in 1975 under the auspices of the American Society for Medical Technology, now called the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). In subse-quent years, other organizations have served as cosponsors and campaign supporters. In the Fall of 2005, National Medical Laboratory Week was changed to National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week to emphasize the person whose expertise is needed in the performance of laboratory testing. The 2007 co-sponsors are the Association of Public Health Laboratories, American Association of Blood Banks, Ameri-can Association for Clinical Chemistry, American Medical Technologists, American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sci-ence, American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Society of Cytopathology, American Society for Microbiol-ogy, CLMA, College of American Pathologists, and the National Society for Histotechnology. There are approximately 300,000 practitioners of clinical laboratory science in the United States. Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, the clinical laboratory science professional has played an increasingly vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. Today, the clinical laboratorian is a key member of a health care team. As team members of one of the largest industries in the United States, the dedicated efforts of laboratory professionals often go unnoticed by the general public, as well as by the very institutions employing their services. With the public now demanding the assurance of quality health care and professional accountability, organizations representing practitio-ners of this critical science have a responsibility to ensure that the public is well informed about clinical laboratory com-petency. Beyond meeting this public need, the celebration of NMLPW will help increase recognition for the profession as it im-proves the individual practitioner’s sense of self-worth. Further, as the various professional groups within laboratory practice work together on this project, the sense of unity and purpose necessary to further the goals of all laboratorians are reinforced. Each laboratory organization sponsoring NMLPW assigns a staff coordinator to be responsible for assist-ing their members in promoting the week. NMLPW Objectives: • To recognize the vital contributions to health care made by those professionals engaged in clinical laboratory science

in the United States. • To recognize the professional dedication of the practioners of clinical laboratory science to the health care consumer. • To educate the public, government and private sectors about the key role played by the clinical laboratory profes-

sional to the health care consumer. • To enhance the image of clinical laboratory professionals in the public and private sectors.
