In the early years of Hilton Head Island, Shipyard Plantation was once referred

to as Brickyard Plantation. Its first owner was Henry Talbot (Talbird), a

bricklayer from Dublin, Ireland – hence the name Brickyard. In a deed

recorded in London the name was misspelled – “Talbird” which most of the

family then adopted. During this time, he supplied the bricks and built one of

Tybee’s earliest lighthouses which he was granted additional land on the Island

known as the Talbird Plantation.
