209.210.211Theeggdropsyndrome1976(EDS76)isaninfectiousdiseaseinlayerhensmanifestedbyaquickdropineggproduction,failuretoreachpeakproduction,irregularly shaped eggs, softshelled or shellless eggs and depigmentation. Theaetiological agent is an adenovirus of group III. The horizontal transmission occursslowly inbatterysystemsandrapidly in floorhousingsystems.The firstsign is theloss of egg pigmentation, rapidly followed by the appearance of softshelled, shellless of deformedshell eggs. If defective eggs are discarded, the remaining oneshave no problem with fertilization and hatching. The drop could be sudden orprolonged. Usually, it lasts for 410 weeks and the egg production is reduced byabout 40%.
