PERSONAL ADVICE

Mrs J of King Street,Duffield, asks “I haverecently cancelled thepremium payments on myunder-performingendowment policy whichwas originally taken out torepay our mortgage. What, if anything, should Ido now?”

There will be many homeowners in Duffield in Mrs J’sposition with underperforming endowmentpolicies unlikely to pay offtheir mortgages on maturity.Having decided to stoppaying premiums there are anumber of options open toher.

Although Mrs J has stoppedpaying premiums the lifecompany may provide aperiod of grace wherebypayment can be resumed andthe policy reinstated, either as

a mortgage repayment vehicleas originally intended, albeitwith some shortfall, or as asavings plan with life cover.

By stopping premiums thepolicy has become “paid up”and if nothing else is done, will simply remain investedfor the rest of the term.To help determine if thiswould be a good value planthe life company can providea projection of the anticipatedmaturity value.

Mrs J could also considersurrendering the policyand realising its value. Again the life companycan provide the currentsurrender value, but inthese circumstances sheshould be aware that thereare often penalties andloss of bonuses. Analternative would be to seeif the policy can be soldfor a higher price on thetraded endowment policymarket.

Once Mrs J has thisinformation she will be in aclearer position to decidewhether to retain the policy orencash it, using the proceedsto either repay part of themortgage or invest elsewhere.

Of course, whatever Mrs Jchooses to do, she must makesure she makes provision torepay the mortgage, either bymaking capital repayments orusing some other investmentvehicle, a pension or ISA forexample. She should also consider if anyreplacement life protectioncover is required to cover thatprovided by the endowmentpolicy.

Because there is no clear cutanswer to Mrs J’s query Iwould always suggest that sheseeks help from anIndependent Financial Advisorwho will be able to establishthe overall position, discuss allthe options and provide asuitable recommendation.

Stephen Leather of independent financial advisorsDerwent Bell Financial Management Ltd, and his

colleague, co-Duffield resident Roger Cresswellwould be delighted to hear from readers seeking

their views on topical financial matters. Anyone looking for more individual independent

financial advice will be dealt with in absoluteconfidence. They can be contacted either by letter:

The Community Week started with the welcome return of theVicarage Garden Party. This was the setting for the crowning ofthe 2009 Carnival Princess, Olivia Halliday, by last year’s princess,Katie Burke, assisted by Olivia’s attendants, Amy Foster and LucyPearson. The evening set the musical tone for the week withperformances by the William Gilbert School choir, the MeadowsSchool recorder group, the Derwent Valley Wind Band and theDalesmen Male Voice Choir.

An added extra was the throaty roar of the Rolls-Royce Griffonengine as the Rolls-Royce Spitfire made a series of flypasts overDuffield. There was also the usual range of refreshments and otherstalls.

Olivia Halliday made her first official appearance at the successfulMeadows School Summer Fair that was the usual mix of stalls, games, competitions and quizzes.

Olivia was on hand to flag away the starters in 24th running of theDuffield Five. 240 runners of all ages completed the course, theoverall winner being Ed Murden who finished in 33 minutes 43seconds. Local runner Matt Rimmington finished just over oneminute behind closely followed by another local runner, JoanneCabourn who was first lady home. As always, the event wasorganised by Jerry Sharp ably assisted by John Raw and membersof the Derby Athletic Club.

The Family Barbecue on Eyes Meadow attracted a largegathering that enjoyed the balmy weather to picnic in groups offamilies and friends. The Princess and her attendants circulated intheir finery. The demand for refreshments was only just satisfiedsuch was the success of the evening.

The Primary School Sports remain as popular as ever with keencompetitive edge between the two schools, siblings and families.Olivia was away at camp on this occasion so it was left to Amyand Lucy to distribute the prizes.

Duffield Singers provided a varied programme of old favouritesand new songs in what has become a traditional concert duringCarnival Week. There were outstanding solo performances bySian Ambercrombie, Belinda Roberts, Louise Winfield and NaomiWilmshurst.

The JuBeLous performed three new numbers from their ever-increasing repertoire whilst the whole choir sang a medley fromFiddler on the Roof.

Last year’s winners of the Treasure Hunt, Neville Leedham andClaire Edwards assisted by Hannah Edwards, set a trail based onthe Bridge Inn that attracted 29 teams made up of 120 entrants.Three teams achieved maximum points and the result was declaredafter a tiebreak. The ‘Ossies’ will receive the Hoskins plate andthe honour of compiling next year’s Treasure Hunt. Theirreplication of the Amber Valley Crest being adjudged the best ofthe three submitted. The ‘Wizzies’ and ‘Dunwinnin’ teams werethe runners-up.

The Carnival Procession was its usual colourful self with plentyof competition between the entries. It was great to see the ‘Pirates of Holloway Road making theirCarnival debut. We will welcome more such entries. Everyone who enters the fancy dress procession is a winner! The layout of the ground was praised, the variety and number ofstalls was a record and the arena events proved to be greatattractions. Gus Demody sheep-dog act appeared to appeal to allages with the arena ropes well lined with onlookers. Mobile phone bills soared as the organisers were in regular contactwith the Black Knights Parachute Display Team throughout theafternoon to see whether they would make it to Duffield. At lunchtime it seemed unlikely as there had been aircraftproblems that delayed their scheduled drop into Wollaton Park. However, later in the afternoon we heard that they had solved theirproblems and had given their display at Wollaton and were thenpreparing to come to Duffield. It was unfortunate that after the ‘will they-won’t they appear’ sagathat one member of the team suffered a broken ankle during aheavy landing when they did finally manage to drop in. It wasmost fortunate that the Derby Mountain Rescue Team hadrequested a pitch at the Carnival and after demonstrating the use oftheir equipment to passers-by it was available to stabilize andimmobilise Paul Jordan before theemergency ambulance arrived. The photo (right) shows Paul beforethings went wrong for him.

Paul was contacted on 23rd July and hehas now had the operation to pin hisankle together and is recovering athome. The lady spectator who went tohospital following a blow on the headfrom some object at the time of Paul’sfall was discharged that evening and isreportedly suffered no ill effects and isnow well recovered. A Civil Aid

member suffered a suspected broken wrist when he fell rushing tohelp. All three were sent best wishes for a complete recovery.During the afternoon music was provided by the Derwent ValleyWind Band. Ashbourne Town Band and the JuBeLous. In the evening the all inclusive Wam Bam Band Concert was agreat attraction with many using the dance floor and hundredsmore sitting outside enjoying the music, food and drink on a warmsummer’s evening. The last customers had to be prised from their seats around 11pm.

Carnival Week concluded with the Church Service in the marqueethat was well attended as usual. From the comments received this too hit the right notes this year. The lucky Programme numbers are; - 276,1525,2009. If youhave one of these numbers please contact Derek Cook on 01332840098Decorated Shop Windows and Strangers in the WindowsAn old idea was resurrected this year with a shopkeeper’scompetition for best-decorated window depicting the Carnivaltheme of ‘Musicals’. This attracted entries from 11 premises and under the rules of thecompetition as laid down in the programme Duffield News wasdeclared the winner and the trophy is proudly displayed in thewinning window along with the Stage Door montage. The Carnival Committee was most impressed with the originalitydisplayed by the shops. Has Phil lost any customers since he chose ‘Sweeny Todd’? Little ‘Oliver’s’ arrival was timely for Duffield Hair Design,‘Cats’ was an obvious choice for Scarsdale Vets. Duffield Video and Duffield Art Gallery both chose ‘High SchoolMusical’ whilst the Post Office and Actu’Elle selected ‘Phantomofthe Opera’. Rose Hips took us to the ‘South Pacific’ and John Clarke andGodfreys followed the Carnival theme with a display of posters fora variety of Musicals. If you didn’t see these displays then youmissed a treat!Congratulations to Chelsea Peake who found mostStrangers in the Windows and so wins the gift token prize.

I am a typical ‘yo yodieter’, my weightranges from a size 12to size 16. I get sofrustrated with myselfand wonder whether Iwill ever be able tokeep the weight off forgood?Weight can increase ordecrease sporadically formany reasons and forthis reason it is alwaysadvisable to go and seeyour GP first for a checkup. Of course, we allknow the basic rule thatif you want to loseweight you must burnmore calories than youeat. However, this iseasier said than done! Arecent study has found amassive 65% of peoplethat went on diets alonegained more weight thanthey lost over 5 years.

In my experience losingweight AND keeping itoff not only requires ahealthy food programmeand exercise but alsorequires you torecognise and changeappropriately youreating habits, yourrelationship with foodand working throughany negative beliefsabout yourself and food.In my experience thisapproach has alwaysbeen successful. This year the 1st Duffield Scout Group celebrated its Centenary and over 100 Beavers, Cubs and

Scouts enjoyed a celebration camp at Hesley Wood Scout Campsite near Sheffield. Activities included, climbing, crate

stacking, orienteering, team buildingchallenges, crossbows, black hole, zipwire, cresta run and assault course.

On Saturday evening there was a realparty atmosphere with party foodincluding jelly and ice cream, a largebirthday cake (two actually) and partygames which included some of the leaders getting wet! Everyone had a great time and some young peopleand adults have already been asking when the next one is? In 100 years perhaps!!!!! Without the help of many adult volunteers thousands of young people would not have benefited fromhaving fun and learning new skills over the past 100 years of the Group.

If you would like to part of theGroup’s next century please contact

Back in 2007 I wrote two articles for the Duffield Sceneabout our canoe trip to raise funds for Tanzania. Martin& Philippa Grosvenor with their two girls Steph and Ellivisited Tanzania in the summer of 2007, during which wehelped build a classroom and taught lessons at theTuishime Primary School. Since then the school, whosepupils are mostly poor or who are AIDS orphans, has doubledin size, the quality of education has improved and one of theteachers has visited us to see some local primary schools inaction. In May 2008 we set up a registered charity which iscalled Hope for Tanzania. The reason for doing this was totake advantage of generous gift aid allowances and topromote the work in a more public way whilst maintainingcredibility with sponsors. Two of the trustees – Peter andMaggie Zimmermann also live in Duffield. The aims of Hope for Tanzania are to:Develop Tuishime School so that it becomes financially self-sufficient. Improve resources in the School so that children receive aneducation which is comparable with that in Europe.Support projects which will create jobs and improve theprospects of Tanzanians, e.g. by establishing funding formicrobusinesses.Assist selected Tanzanians to become influential leaders bysupporting their education, providing advice and encouragingthem to live out Christian values.Provide opportunities for individuals and schools in the UKto give their time and skills to projects in Tanzania. Our motto is Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow. In August and September, a team of 8 people will be inTanzania for periods up to a month to help the school andcarry out other work. Four of us, Kim Jeffery, Roger Lennard,Peter Harris and I, are from St Alkmund’s Church. The support we have had from local people has been greatlyappreciated.During our visit we will help to complete the building of oneclassroom and build a new classroom for the oldest yeargroup. The team will also set up a library with donated books, readbooks with children to improve their English, run art classesfor older children and teach games. W e will be taking some reconditioned laptops with us toleave with those teachers who are IT literate so that they canstart downloading educational resources from the internet. One generous donor will fund equipment to print & copy schoolpapers once we have found out the most cost effective way to dothis. A further aim of ours is to identify projects which we cansupport during the next 2 years before our next visit in 2011. After we return, I will write a further article about ourexperiences. But for now we say “Kwaheri, asante sana”. Please contact Martin Grosvenor on 01332 840753 or e mail

[email protected] for further information.

CCTV LIVE IN DUFFIELD

The Safer Neighbourhood Team were pleased to notify the

Parish Council at their meeting on 14th July 2009 that CCTVcameras were now running live on Town Street. This follows extensive lobbying by Councillor Short who is amember of both the Parish and Borough Council.

GREEN CAR PARK AT EYES MEADOWThe Parish Council is currently working on the provision of a“Green Car Park” at Eyes Meadow. The area indicated by thenewly constructed fencing opposite the Cricket Pavilion will itis hoped be completed sometime next spring and accommodateup to 60 cars. Initial enquires have identified a surfacing whichwill allow the grass to mesh with the surfacing creating a naturalappearance to the site which will enhance the area. A PlanningApplication for the new surfacing will be made in September. Ifyou have any comments on the provision of the new car park

area please contact the Clerk

An example of thetype of surfacing to beused at Eyes Meadow

STAY SAFE BY THE WATERAs the Summer holiday get into full swing, we would urge allusers of Eyes Meadow and Grays Recreational ground to beaware of river safety, and resist the temptation of talking a dipin what might appear to be cooling waters. We wouldparticularly urge young teenagers to resist the temptations ofbreaking into the gas pipe at Eyes Meadow which crosses theRiver Derwent. The River has dangerous under currents andhas caught out even strong swimmers with its dense weeds. The Parish Council have asked British Gas to look at the safetyof their fencing around the pipe, and action to close off the pipehas been agreed. Any problems on this issue can be reported toBritish Gas on 0845 605 6677.

COMMUNITY PAYBACK SCHEME WORKING AT THECEMETERY

REFURBISHMENT OF MEMORIALThe Parish Council has agreed toundertake further refurbishment works atthe village war memorial on ChurchDrive. An order has been with Memorial MasonsL Petts, to clean and re inscribe the namesof those fallen. Distraction Burglaries: Thisis a general reminder aboutdistraction burglaries after anincident in the Belper areawhere the offender managedto gain entry claiming to befrom the water board. These types of offences areoften not concentrated in anyparticular location and canoccur anywhere. Fortunately it just takes a fewsimple steps to stop theoffender:1. Never allow any unknownperson into your house thatturns up without anappointment without checkingthem out first. If you are alone it is a goodidea to have an agreementwith a trusted neighbour orfamily member to comearound to be with you ifsomeone is due to call.2. Always check they haveidentity if they represent acompany or social services.Don’t let the person in untilyou have verified this with the

organisation they work forusing a telephone numberfrom a phone book.3. Never be panicked intoletting someone in withstories of a water leak or a lostdog.4. Your best defence is to justbe aware that these crimes dohappen, but they are rare.Any bogus caller will soonmove on if they feel you areaware of them.5. If you suspect you havebeen targeted by a boguscaller contact the policeimmediately on 999 and if possible give adescription of the offenderand any vehicle they may beusing.Car security: Please makesure that you never leave anyitems on view in your carwhen left unattended. Lock any items in the boot orin the glove box and takethem out at night. If you have a sat nav lock itaway safely when not in use

and remove any signs that youmay have one. An opportunist thief maybreak in if they have anysuspicions there may besomething of value within.A general reminder aboutburglaries:Please don’t be misled intothinking that upper smallwindows are safe. An opportunist thief may gainaccess if suitable means areavailable, such as a wheeliebin, insecure ladder or a flatroof below. The offender may then use animplement to unlock a largerwindow nearby and gainaccess to the house. If you do leave upperwindows open, ask yourselfhow you would get in if youaccidentally locked yourselfout because if you could getin easily, so could a burglar.Conman sentenced:Back in April there was areport of a conman claimingto have been sent by the localchurch leader telling a storyabout moving to the area andstruggling for funds due tobank problems. He committed fraud anddistraction burglaries acrossthe country includingDerbyshire and has beensentenced to five years inprison for carrying out 59

similar offences. He was arrested after hisphoto appeared on BBCCrimewatch. His method was to knock ondoors claiming a link to thelocal vicar or other member ofthe church community, andasked householders to lendhim money varying from £10to £400. He would then distract thehouseholder before stealingcash, bank cards and othersimilar items. We would encourage anyonetargeted in this way to contactpolice and we would alsoremind homeowners to be ontheir guard against similaroffenders. You should never to allowanyone you don’t know intoyour home unless they have alegitimate reason to be there.
