Girl with goals• by Cally Nundahl
Sophia Strand is a young girl with big goals toraise money for Relay For Life and cancerresearch.
This is her fifth year raising money withSophia’s Cancer Stompers, Cupcakes forCancer, and her goal this year is to raise $7,500.Last year she raised $5,400.
The 10-year-old is asking for the communi-ty’s support at two upcoming fundraisingevents. Sophia will have a booth at the RelayFor Life event tonight, Thursday, June 7 at thePavilion in Detroit Lakes. The event begins at 5p.m.
Sophia will have a silent auction to include
kids toys, gift certificates, and custom wooditems.
Saturday, June 9 during Frazee’s City-wideSales & Crazy Days, Sophia will be selling herCupcakes for Cancer at the Frazee Event Centerparking lot from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. She will have 40dozen cupcakes and cookies for a freewill dona-tion to her team.
Sophia will also be selling bracelets for $2each that say “Fight the Fight, Find a Cure, KickCancer's Butt” and will come in purple, pink, blue, green, and orange. Please stop by and geta cupcake and bracelet and support her efforts.
When asked where the inspiration came fromto start fundraising for cancer, she replied, “Myfirst motivation came from my first grade
teacher Mrs. Trapp, when she got diagnosedwith breast cancer a few days before schoolstarted. I wanted to help so I did Treats for Trappduring the city-wide garage sales in my frontyard. I raised $300 for her.”
Sophia has continued for five years andexplained, “My continuing motivation comesfrom people that have died from cancer and peo-ple who have defeated cancer. And also, fami-lies that have lost loved ones from the horribledisease.”
The soon-to-be 11-year-old (June 15) wasalso motivated by the fact that she knew what itwas like to have an extended stay in the hospitalas she had a tethered spinal cord condition in2013. It has been resolved by surgery in
December 2013 and she is completely back toher old self, and as of now has no complications.
To give a donation call her mother NicoleStrand at 701-793-6942 or go to Facebook:www.facebook.com/events/154913991987474or look up Sophia's Cupcakes for Cancer. Or goto the Becker County Relay For Life websiteand click on donate, then type in the team nameSophia's Cancer Stompers and donate to herdirectly there.
“God has given me a gift to help people andfamilies keep their loved ones, and this is how Iuse that gift. I look forward to there being a curefor this unwanted disease so that no one losestheir lives or loved ones to cancer,” she conclud-ed.
