August 2003 MARKET PROSPECTS 4 Filtration Industry Analyst FW will carry out the work through a partnership with Duro Felguera SA, a Spanish manufacturing and construc- tion contractor. FW originally supplied the 350 MWe boilers between 1976 and 1979 as brown coal units and modified the systems between 1993 and 1996, allowing the boilers to fire up to 50% imported coal. As a result of the run-down of the local brown coal mine sup- plying the plant, this latest upgrade is designed to enable the boilers to fire 100% imported low-sulphur coal. Work on the first unit will start immediately and the entire project is scheduled to be completed in 2008. VA TECH HYDRO WINS PORTUGUESE CONTRACT VA Tech Hydro has been awarded a 2.7 million con- tract by EDP (Electricidad de Portugal) Energia for the turbine modernization of the Belver IV in Portugal. The upgrade will involve an integral turbine moderniza- tion and repair – shafts, bear- ings, runner, blades, shaft seal- ing housing, generator, excitation system, water cool- ing system, oil and water pip- ing, spare parts and new gover- nor – including engineering, workshop and site assembly and commissioning. Located on the river Tajo, the Belver IV is due to be commissioned in February 2004. COATINGS AKZO NOBEL TO BUILD CHINESE COATINGS PLANT Akzo Nobel is strengthening its position in the Chinese coatings market by investing in a new factory for decora- tive coatings. The facility, which will produce water-based wall paints for the Chinese market, will be built on the company’s existing site in Suzhou near Shanghai. Construction work on the factory is scheduled to begin by the end of the year. The new facility is expected to be opera- tional by the first quarter of 2005. MINING UNDERGROUND COAL MINE DOWN UNDER BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) plans to develop a new punch long- wall underground coal mine in Central Queensland, Australia. The A$102 million Broad- meadow Mine will have the capacity to produce up to 3.6 million tonnes of high quality coking coal per year. Develop- ment is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2003, with longwall operations set for the second half of 2005. Located on BMA’s Goon- yella open cut mine lease, Broadmeadow Mine will fea- ture BMA’s first application of punch longwall mining, an underground technique using an existing open cut pit for longwall panel access. CHEMICALS WORLD’S LARGEST POLYTHF PLANT FOR SHANGHAI BASF has laid the corner- stone of its new integrated production facility for poly- tetrahydrofuran (polyTHF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park in Caojing, Shanghai, China. With an annual capacity of 60 000 metric tons of polyTHF and 80 000 metric tons of THF, the project will be the largest polyTHF production facility worldwide. The new plant, scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2004, will supply the rapidly expanding spandex fibre market in China. AMEC TO BUILD CHINA’S FIRST PAN/CARBON FIBRE PLANT AMEC has been awarded a US$25 million contract by China Worldbest Group to engineer and construct a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and carbon fibre production plant in Bengbu, Anhui province, eastern China. Working with Applied Composite Engineering Ltd, AMEC will undertake the engineering, procurement, pro- ject management, construction supervision and commission- ing of what will be the first combined polyacrylonitrile and carbon fibre plant to be built in China. AMEC has already started engineering design at its offices in Shang- hai and the UK, with project completion scheduled for Feb- ruary 2005. WATER & WASTEWATER EFFORTS MADE TO BOOST IRAQI WATER CAPACITY USAID, with Bechtel as the lead contractor, is working with the Iraqi water authori- ty to increase water capacity in eastern Baghdad from 153 million gallons per day to 206 million gallons per day. The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) has provided funding for stand-alone gener- ating units for all 34 of Bagh- dad’s water treatment plants. Bechtel is assessing the units’ condition and the additional power needed. In Basrah, Bechtel has started installing emergency power generators for the main water treatment and pumping plants. Meanwhile, the compa- ny’s water specialist continues to visit power plants, identify- ing the priorities for power plants needing water treatment upgrades. PENNVEST APPROVES US$85M FOR WATER PROJECTS Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PEN- NVEST) has approved US$76.3 million in low-inter- est loans and US$8.7 million in grants to fund 31 drinking water, wastewater and storm water projects across the state. The funding ranges from US$180 200 for the installa- tion of drinking water distribu- tion lines in Washington Coun- ty to more than US$10 million to construct 36 miles of collec- tion lines and force mains in Beaver County. SKANKSA WINS NY CONTRACT Skanska is to expand and upgrade the 310 million gal- lons per day Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in New York City. Skanska’s work accounts for US$222 million of the US$493 million project. The project is one of the final phases of a major plant upgrade to fulfill federal requirements to provide sec- ondary treatment of all sewage. Work will begin in August and is scheduled to be completed in January 2008.
