SCIENCE-ADVERTISEMENTS for Efficient, Economical Micro-Projection with a Standard Microscope * Adaptable to industrial laboratory work, commercial demonstra- tion, or science teaching, the Bausch & Lomb Model B Micro- Projector offers effective and economical micro-projection. It is used in conjunction with any standard microscope equipped with sub- stage condenser. Both permanently mounted and living specimens may be projected. Since the stage is horizontal, wet mounts are handled easily. A high intensity, automatic arc illuminator assures maximum brilliance for sharp, distinct screen images. Living speci- mens are protected from the heat of the arc by a large water cell. Setting up and operating the Model B Micro-Projector is extremely simple. Details available in Catalog E-20. THESE photographs show the inhibitory action of increasing concen-trations of Streptomycin on a strain of six representative organisms URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

in vitro. Inhibitory levels of concentration vary significantly with dif- due toferent strains. susceptible gram-negative organisms

Streptomycin exhibits a wide range of antibacterial activity in vitroand in vivo against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.Clinical results do not necessarily parallel in vitro activity or therapeutic TULAREMIAresults in experimental animals.

In clinical practice, Streptomycin is especially interesting because ofits effectiveness against susceptible gram-negative organisms. The mostnoteworthy results to date have been obtained in the infections listed due to Hemophilus influenzoaat the right.

Ourproduction of Streptomycin is being rapidly expanded. However, due to thepresent WOUND INFECTIONSshortage, Streptomycin was placed on allocation by the Civilian Production Adminis-tration effective March 1, 1946. At present, civilian distribution may be authorized due toonly by Dr. Chester Keefer, Evans Memorial Hospital, Boston, Mass., Chairman of susceptible gram-negative organismsthe Committee on Chemotherapeutic and OtherAgents of the National Research Council.

Technical Translator.

An important publication for all chemists, engineers, and other scientists interested in consultingthe original Russian sources. This book is a scientifically organized reference to 80,000 terms, with a comprehensive coverage of organic and inorganic chemistry, and chemical technology andmineralogy. Also extensively covered are metallurgy, mining, geology, engineering, physics, botany, pharmacy, and the more common terms in agriculture, medicine, aeronautics, meteorology, and mili-tary science. Besides the terms used in research and academic work, the book includes those usedmost frequently in industry.

FOREST SOILSHAROLD J. LUTZ, Professor of Forestry,

Yale University, and ROBERT F.-CHANDLER,Professor of Forest Soils, Cornell University.

This new book covers the fundamentals of soil science so thoroughly that no supplementary textbookis needed. Written specifically for forestry students, it omits the purely agronomic considerationsand stresses applications in forestry. Essentially a comprehensive summary and interpretation ofthe more important forest soils literature, it includes and critically analyzes much of the scientificwork produced here and abroad.

Ready in November. Approximately 514 pages. 6 by 91/4. Probable price $5.00

ORGANIC REACTIONSROGER ADAMS, Editor-in-Chief.

The first two volumes in this series were enthusiastically received as landmarks in the literature oforganic chemistry. Now the third volume, prepared with consummate care by recognized leadersin the field, has just been published. Here in concise, reliable form are the applications of impor-tant synthetic reactions to various compounds. As in the previous volumes, the material is presentedfrom the preparative viewpoint, outlining the nature of the reactions discussed and stating theirscope and limitations.

Published in October. 460 pages. 6 by 91/4. $5.00

THE PATH OF SCIENCEC. E. KENNETH MEES, Vice President in

Charge of Research, Eastman Kodak Company.

A penetrating study which tells the story of science in human history. The first part of the book-reviews the evolution of scientific thought and the various social factors influencing that evolution.Specifically discussed are the development of the scientific method and the growth of physical, chemical, and biological ideas. The practical applications of the background material are givenin the concluding chapters which deal with present-day organization for scientific research, appli-cations of science to industry, and the relation of science to society, including proposals for scien-tific study of sociology and politics.

RCA ELECTRON MICROSCOPEA low-cost tool for speeding process control and research

Now, for the first time since before the war, thisvaluable instrument is readily available to anyone.

It provides production specialists and researchworkers with a compact, easily operated super-magnifier for studying the size, shape, and structureof particles too small to be seen by other means. Itssimplified construction, ease of operation make itparticularly suitable for repetitive checking opera-tions and routine analysis. There are two magnification positions: 500 X

and 5000 X. A built-in camera makes it a simplematter to make good micrographs which can beusefully enlarged to 100,000 diameters!

Best of all, it is a device for small budgets-

approximately one half the price of the world-famous "Universal" model, made possible by theelimination of a few versatility features not generallyrequired by industry. Yet it has approximately thesame high resolving power as the larger model andample magnification for 90 percent of all direct-viewing needs. Since no water-cooling is required,it can be easily moved wherever needed.

This remarkable instrument is now uncoveringnew knowledge and speeding research in a widevariety of industries. We'll be glad to help youappraise the possibilities of this immediately avail-able instrument or of the larger model in connec-tion with your work. Write Dept. 75-KI

Out of General Chemical's extensive fluorine research program in thefield of organic chemistry comes Genetron 101 ... the second in a seriesof important aliphatic organic fluorine compounds.

This chlorinated derivative of ethylidine fluoride has a lower meltingpoint and lower vapor pressures than the parent compound. Many of itsapplications are already under investigation by far-sighted manufacturerswho recognize the industrial potentialities of Genetron 101: as a refrig-erant ... an aerosol dispersant in admixture with other Genetrons ...a selective solvent . . a dielectric . . . and as an intermediate in thepreparation of various other organic chemicals. The physical data here may suggest uses for this low boiling organic

liquid which also merit your prompt investigation. For experimentalsamples, write General Chemical Company, Fluorine Division, 40 RectorStreet, New York 6, N. Y.

HEMOGLOBIN DETERMINATIONSwith the New Spencer Hb-Meter

here is by far the simplest, fastest, mosteconomical way to make hem6globin de-terminations of laboratory accuracy.

Carried in pocket or bag, the new lib-Aleteris instantly ready for use at the hospital, office., or patient's bedside. It operates eitherfrom the self-contained dry cells or from anyelectrical outlet. No diluting fluids or volu-metric measurements are necessary. Notables or calibration curves need be con-sulted. The results appear directly in gramsper 100 cc or in terms of percentage normalfor any one of three recognized standards.
