It is my pleasure to invite you to Alumina 2018, the 11th AQW International Conference, which will be held in September 2018 in Gladstone Queensland. Alumina 2018 is organised by the Alumina Quality Workshop (AQW) Inc. and is expected to attract 300 industry producers and suppliers to the city from all over the world.
The Alumina Quality Workshop began in 1988 as a forum to bring the world’s alumina producers and their customers together to exchange ideas and information around a common goal of improved product quality. The symposia have been held in Australia at an interval of three years. Over time, the workshop has evolved into a major international symposium, incorporating all aspects of the production of alumina from bauxite. In recognition of this evolution we have rebranded the conference name Alumina 2018.
The conference offers a unique opportunity to hear about the latest developments in alumina production and to network with other alumina producers, researchers and suppliers. The conference theme Efficiency for the Future reflects the current industry focus on cost reduction, optimisation of raw materials & energy use and the adoption of new technology. This continual drive for improved efficiency will ultimately result in a sustained and thriving alumina industry for the future.
The event will be held at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre (GECC), Gladstone, Queensland, Australia from 9 to 14 September, 2018. It will feature 3 days of conference presentations and social functions and a day for industry tours. The conference is also hosting the ATR 4.0 workshop on the final day, which will develop a roadmap to help guide research and development in the Alumina Industry to 2050 and beyond.
I am delighted that we are holding the conference in the regional location of Gladstone, Queensland. Gladstone is a modern city that has grown around an industrial backbone and features two alumina refineries with a combined annual production of over 7 Mt of alumina. The conference location will give an opportunity for delegates to experience both the regional location and to see the Rio Tinto Yarwun and QAL alumina refineries. We hope that our national and international delegates will also allow some time to explore the surrounding region, which features the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef.
I look forward to meeting with you at Alumina 2018.

Rio Tinto Yarwun alumina refinery was the first greenfield refinery to be built in the western world in 20 years in 2004. The refinery uses leading-edge technology with environmental design features to produce 3.2million tonnes of alumina per year. The refinery also includes a 160MW cogeneration facility, which allows us to reduce our greenhouse gas intensity, harness waste heat to create steam, and feed surplus, low emission electricity back into the Queensland electricity grid.
This site tour will include a drive around the key components of the refinery process and a look out of the whole Bayer process. Key specialists will also be available to provide commentary and answer any questions.
‘ATR 4.0’ – The Alumina Technology Roadmap for the 4th Industrial Revolution
Date: Friday 14 September 2018
Time: 8.30am – 4.00pm
Venue: Hall C, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre
Cost: Included in Full Registration Includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea
Additional Tickets: $110 per person
Have your say on the future of the Alumina Industry
ATR 4.0 will help guide research and development in the Alumina Industry to 2050 and beyond. It will be a live, web-based forum for ideas that will bring together researchers and industry practitioners in ways never before possible. It will be kick-started by a broad-based Roadmap Workshop at Alumina 2018.
The Alumina Technology Roadmap is an initiative of the Alumina Technical Panel, sponsored by the International Aluminium Association (IAI) through its subcommittee, the Bauxite-Alumina Committee (BAC).
The first Alumina Technology Roadmap provided the framework for focused research in the areas most critical to the industry. Created in 2001 and updated in 2006 and 2010, the Roadmap was a great success. It stimulated highly productive research programs on thickening, air emissions and residue management. The economic downturn in the latter part of the decade reduced public and private support for research. Key bauxite residue projects continued, but others were not.
As we approach the 20-year horizon set in 2001, much has been achieved but there is still much to be done. An ongoing research program, responsive to changing stakeholder expectations and able to leverage emerging technology developments, is essential for our long-term industry aspirations.
It is time to renew and revitalize the Roadmap and deliver it on the web as a living guide to the technology direction of the Alumina Industry.
ATR 4.0 will come to life at the Roadmap Workshop which will be held as part of this Alumina 2018 Conference.
It will focus on these 5 Key Themes:
• Energy of the Future– decarbonizing our industry• Residue – or not?• Process Science & Technology• Industry 4.0 – the Digital Revolution• Market risks & responses
If you would like to learn more or contribute ideas on the content or process of the Roadmap, please get in touch with the Alumina Technology Roadmap Steering Committee by email to the Secretary: [email protected].
It is time to renew and revitalize the Roadmap and deliver it on the web.
