Tanker Safety Service to reduce the risk of an oil spill
Juhani Tervala 15
• The vessels transmit their route plan in electronic form via the Internet to be checked by the Vessel Traffic Services.
• The vessels send their route plan to the VTS Centre via an Internet-based system. The safety of the route plan is checked and updated and route-specific information transmitted to the vessels.
• The vessels are warned about detected risks in their route plans.
• In the future, the vessels’ route plans can be used to create real-time traffic images in order to obtain traffic information and predict traffic.
The aim of the Tanker Safety Project is to significantly reduce the risk of an oil spill by creating a two-way navigation service, which will improve maritime safety and facilitate bridge operations. The project will be tested in the Gulf of Finland during the year 2012 and it can also be extended to other sea areas.
