EBBS Newsletter 2019 Issue 2 Page 1 Dear EBBS Member, Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter! We hope you’ve all had an opportunity to enjoy the summer’s weather and conferences, such as Designer Biology 2019 held by our section in (mostly) sunny Newcastle, UK, at the start of August. We have a conference report from Andrea Giachino in this issue in case you missed this exciting event! We also have several new communication team members to introduce to you this issue. With our growing team we will be bringing you more news and features, including a regular on-line journal club, so keep an eye on our social media feeds and website! Lastly we’d like to tell you about a webinar later this month from IBISBA. It will tell you how to get access to industrial biotech infrastructure for you lab, and if you’d like to find out more and to sign up just follow the links below! Enjoy the issue! Past events

Outstanding success and productivedebates crowned the 2nd Designer BiologySymposium as one of the scientific highlightsof the past summer. The Symposium, sponsored by the EFB, saw more than 120delegates from 18 different countries gather inNewcastle upon Tyne, UK for three days ofinspiring talks, scientific conversations, andnetworking.

Surrounded by the historical scenery of theKing's Quad, Newcastle University, attendingdelegates discussed the state of the art inBioengineering, detailing techniques at theinterface of material design, bioprocessing, andsynthetic biology. Keynotes included excitingcontributions from Dr Anna Rising (KarolinskaInstitutet, Sweden), a pioneer in synthetic silkspinning, and Dr Jonah Elbaz (Tel AvivUniversity, Israel), who is developing cell-on-chip microfluidic technologies. In addition, more than 50 posters were presented byresearchers at all career stages.

One aspect that made Designer Biology2019 especially stand out was its feeling of soli-darity and inclusiveness. Equality of op-portunities was the core of the event's values; ablind review of submitted abstracts resulted ina gender-balanced programme of speakers, and an expert on-site crèche provided care andentertainment for attending little ones. Earlycareer researchers made up 60% of thespeakers, including an interesting contributionfrom Stanford University undergraduate, MrAdvait Patil. The UK iGEM meet-up was alsoassociated with the event, as 70 iGEM teammembers from across the country participatedin an event on July 31st.

The Designer Biology Symposium ischaracterized by its interdisciplinary remit. It isjointly organized by two of our Federation'sSections: Polymer Biotechnology, andBioengineering and Bioprocessing; it bringscolleagues in different disciplines together onthe basis of common methods and a sharedmission. Moreover, the event providedattendees with valuable opportunities toreview the community's priorities for futuredevelopment.

On August 1st, all delegates were invited toattend a joint discussion panel with colleaguesfrom the Artificial Life community, whoseALIFE 2019 Conference was also hosted atNewcastle University. The topics exploredincluded how the key scientific targets of thecentury can contribute to enhance Earth'shabitability, as well as how our scientificcommunities can successfully engage with thepublic. The last conference day saw colleaguesinvolved in Biodesign Automation cometogether to review the field's priorities andfuture development targets.

The community will reconvene in two years'time in Freiburg, Germany, for a renewedopportunity to share the exceptional vibe ofthis outstanding event. Until then, stay tunedon the EFB Events page for other excitingopportunities to meet fellow researchers andcontribute to cutting-edge proceedings in ourfield.

"I am a mother, a scientist and a PhD student in the Schoolof Biochemical Engineering at the University ofBirmingham. I completed my MSc in MolecularBiotechnology at the same University (School ofBiosciences) and started an Honorary Research role at theSchool of Biosciences for about 6 months. I then joined theindustry as an Upstream Process Development Scientistand got promoted to Senior Scientist that I enjoyed workingfor 5 years. I have the experience of managing contracts, leading project teams, designing experiments with theapplication of DoE to optimise processes, planning andperforming scale-up/down studies, knowledge and tech-transfer. I am also a member of the Society for IndustrialMicrobiology and Biotechnology (SIMB).I have not got much experience with social media and I amenjoying the learning curve in the EFB communicationteam. I strongly believe that the research each one of usdoes is to advance everyone’s knowledge and it isimportant to share the hard work everyone is putting intoscience"

“I just started my 3rd year as PhD student in Louise Horsfall’sgroup at the University of Edinburgh, where I engineer non-model organisms for industrially extreme conditions. I alsowork as a laboratory demonstrator for MSc practical classesand maintain a 3D printing facility, where we make labequipment from biodegradable plastics. My hobbies includeplaying squash, photography and making music (beingcreative in general). Being part of the EFB communicationsteam, I would like to use and refine some of my media andscience communication-related skills”
