Supplementary notes on using the lens andtaking pictures.

Features1. The Image Stabilizer provides the effect of

having a shutter speed about four stops fasterduring normal shooting.*This function provides optimal imagestabilization depending on shooting conditions(such as shooting still subjects and followingshots).

2. And with the vibration gyro and accelerationsensor, the image stabilization is highlyeffective even for close-up shots.

3. UD lens elements for excellent imagingperformance.

4. Ultrasonic motor (USM) for quick and quietautofocusing.

5. Manual focusing is available after the subject comesinto focus in autofocus mode (ONE SHOT AF).

6. A truly round aperture hole results in a nicerbackground blur.

7. A Canon macro flash makes it easy to takeclose-up pictures with a flash. The innerfocusing mechanism enables AF photographywhile the macro flash is attached.

8. Tight seal structure ensures excellent dust-proof and drip-proof performance.

* Based on [1/focal length] second. To prevent blur caused by camera shake during normalshooting, the shutter speed should be the reciprocal ofthe current focal length (1/focal length) or faster.

See your camera’s instructions for details onmounting and detaching the lens.

• After detaching the lens, place the lens with therear end up to prevent the lens surface andelectrical contacts from getting scratched.

• If the contacts get soiled, scratched, or havefingerprints on them, corrosion or faultyconnections can result. The camera and lensmay not operate properly.

• If the contacts get soiled or have fingerprints onthem, clean them with a soft cloth.

• If you remove the lens, cover it with the dustcap. To attach it properly, align the lens mountindex and the K index of the dust cap as shownin the diagram, and turn clockwise. To remove it,reverse the order.

1. Mounting and Detaching the Lens

The lens mount has a rubber ring for enhancedwater- and dust-resistance. The rubber ring maycause slight abrasions around the camera's lensmount, but this will not cause any problems. If therubber ring becomes worn, it is replaceable by aCanon Service Center at cost.

To shoot in autofocus (AF) mode, set the focusmode switch to AF.To use only manual focusing (MF), set the focusmode switch to MF, and focus by turning thefocusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

2. Setting the FocusMode

After autofocusing in ONE SHOT AF mode, focusmanually by pressing the shutter button halfwayand turning the focusing ring. (Full-time manualfocus)

You can switch the focusing distance range toone of three settings: FULL (0.3 m/1.0 ft. toinfinity), 0.3 m/1.0 ft. to 0.5 m/1.6 ft., or 0.5 m/1.6ft. to infinity.By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.

5. HoodThe ET-73 hood can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and also protects the lens from rain, snow, and dust.

To attach the hood, align the hood’s attachment position mark with the red dot on the front of thelens, then turn the hood as shown by the arrow until the lens' red dot is aligned with the hood's stopposition mark. The hood can be reverse-mounted on the lens for storage.

• Part of the picture may be blocked if the hood is not attached properly.• When attaching or detaching the hood, grasp the base of the hood to turn it. To prevent deformation, do not

grasp the rim of the hood to turn it.• Remove the hood when using the macro flash.

6. Picture TakingNormal PhotographyThe lens can be used as a medium-telephotolens for normal photography such as portraits.

Closeup PhotographyClose-up photos up to 1x (life-size) magnificationare possible. The minimum focusing distance of30 cm is the distance from the subject to thefocal plane. The working distance from the frontof the lens to the subject is about 14 cm.

For normal close-up shooting, the higher themagnification, the faster the shutter speed mustbe to prevent blur caused by camera shake.Although it depends on the shooting conditions, usually the shutter speed must be at least one ortwo stops faster than normal.

For a shooting magnification of 0.5x, this lensprovides the effect of a shutter speed faster byabout three stops. For 1x, it will be about twostops faster.*

* Depending on shooting conditions.

Since macro shots have a very shallow depth offield, focus carefully to obtain proper sharpness.

• The magnification refers to the ratio between thesubject’s size and the corresponding image sizeon the focal plane. On the distance index, it isindicated as 1:x.

• To check the depth of field, press the camera'sdepth-of-field preview button.

7. About ExposureSetting the ExposureWhen taking photographs using TTL metering,no exposure compensation is necessary to meterthe light coming through the lens. With TTL metering, AE (autoexposure) ispossible at all focusing distances. Just set thedesired picture-taking mode, then check theshutter speed and aperture before taking thepicture.

Magnification and Effective f-numberThe aperture displayed by the camera assumesthat the focus is set to infinity. The actualaperture (effective f-number) becomes darker(effective f-number increases) at closer focusingdistances (magnification increases). This doesnot cause exposure problems for normal picture-taking. However, for closeup photography, youcannot ignore the change in the effective f-number.

• The correct exposure for a close-up shot largelydepends on the subject. Therefore, try to bracketthe exposure for the same subject.

• Using aperture-priority AE (Av) or Manual (M)picture-taking modes are recommended formacro photography as it is easy to adjust depthof field and exposure in these modes.

8. Image StabilizerYou can use the image stabilizer in AF or MF mode. This function provides optimal image stabilization depending onshooting conditions (such as shooting still subjects and followingshots).

The image stabilizer in this lens iseffective for hand-held shots underthe following conditions.

• Close-up shooting.• In semi-darkened areas such as

indoors or outdoors at night.• In locations where flash

photography is prohibited, such asart museums and theater stages.

• In situations where your footing isuncertain.

• In situations where fast shuttersettings cannot be used.

• When panning subjects in motion.

1 Set the STABILIZERswitch to .• If you are not going to

use the image stabilizerfunction, set the switch to

.

2When you press theshutter button halfway, the Image Stabilizerwill start operating.• Make sure the image in

the viewfinder is stable, then press the shutterbutton the rest of the waydown to take the picture.

Image Stabilizer

• The shorter the subject distance from thecamera, the lesser the Image Stabilizer effectwill be.

• The Image Stabilizer cannot compensate for ablurred shot caused by a subject that moved.

• Set the STABILIZER switch to when you aretaking pictures using the Bulb setting (longexposures). If the STABILIZER switch is set to ,the image stabilizer function may introduce errors.

• The Image Stabilizer may not be fully effective ifyou shoot from a violently shaking vehicle orother transportation.

• The Image Stabilizer consumes more powerthan normal shooting, so fewer shots can betaken if you use the function.

• The image stabilizer operates for about twoseconds even when your finger is off the shutterbutton. Do not remove the lens while the stabilizeris in operation. This will cause a malfunction.

• With the EOS-1V/HS, 3, ELAN 7E/ELAN7/30/33, ELAN 7NE/ELAN 7N/30V/33V, ELANII/ELAN IIE/50/50E, REBEL 2000/300, IX, andD30, the Image Stabilizer will not work duringself-timer operation.

• When shooting a still subject, it compensates forcamera shake in all directions.

• It compensates for vertical camera shake duringfollowing shots in a horizontal direction, andcompensates for horizontal camera shakeduring following shots in a vertical direction.

• Using a tripod also stabilizes the image. However, depending on the kind of tripod andshooting conditions, sometimes it may be betterto turn off the Image Stabilizer function.

• The stabilizer is equally effective for hand-heldphotography and photography with a monopod.

• The image stabilizer function also operateswhen the lens is used with an Extension TubeEF12 ll or EF25 ll.

• Pictures may look distorted after being takendepending on the camera, but this doesn't affectshooting.

• If you set the camera’s Custom Function tochange the assigned button to operate the AF,the Image Stabilizer will operate when you pressthe newly assigned AF button.

9.Taking Hand-held Close-upsClose-up shots are more prone to be affected bycamera shake than with normal shooting. TheImage Stabilizer's corrective effect is thereforeless during close-ups than during normal shootingeven with the same degree of camera shake. The depth of field also becomes very shallow withclose-ups, and moving forward or back evenslightly will throw off the focus. When hand-holding the camera for close-upshooting, minimize camera shake and blurredfocus with the following techniques:

Hold the camera firmlyAs shown on the right, hold the camera firmly soit does not move while shooting.

Use AI Servo AFFor close-up shots, set the camera's AF mode toAI Servo AF. Using autofocus is recommended. The AI Servo AF mode can minimize blurredfocus during close-up shooting. For details, see the camera's instruction manual.

Place both elbows on a steady surface such as a table.

Use your knee to supportan arm holding thecamera.

Lean against a steadyobject like a wall.

10. Using the Tripod Mount (Sold separately)

Adjusting the Revolving MountThis lens can be used with the D (B) tripod mount ring, sold separately. You can loosen the orientation lock-knob on the tripod mount to allow it to rotate as needed to fit aparticular camera model for switching between vertical and horizontal positions.

DetachingUse the following procedures to remove and attach the tripod mount.

The tripod collar can be attached to or detached from the lens while the lens is attached to the camera.

Depending on the EOS camera model, if a battery pack or vertical grip is attached, the tripod mount maybump into it. If that is the case, remove the battery pack/vertical grip or the tripod mount.

Turn the locking knobcounterclockwise until itbecomes loose (about 3 turns),and pull the knob in the directionof the arrow to release the collar.

With the collar open, remove the tripod mount.

To install, while pulling thelocking knob, bring the collarto the original position, andtighten the locking knobsecurely.
