Pastoral Ponderings
Happy Easter! Roger Bannister passed away on March 3 at the age of 88. On May 6, 1954, he ran a mile in under four minutes. Until then, such a feat was considered impossible. But after he
broke that milestone, dozens of others went on to run even faster. Sixty years later, a 4-minute mile won’t even get you to the Olympics. Bannister gave a whole new understanding of what was humanly possible in distance running. His accomplishment defied belief.
Like Thomas, many of us feel as though we need to see to believe. Even when we see amazing things, our mind strains to take it all in. If we believe what we profess, that Jesus was raised from the dead… how can such things not boggle our brains? Jesus surmounted an obstacle that is humanly impossible. He blazed the trail for us through death into new life.
And the evidence of this new life in Christ is everywhere. Look at the proof in the Acts of the Apostles. Look at the lives of the saints. Secular commentator Nicholas Kristof wrote in the New York Times, “I must say that a disproportionate share of the aid workers I’ve met in the wildest places over the years, long after anyone sensible had evacuated, have been evangelicals, nuns or priests….In the United States and abroad, the safety net of soup kitchens, food pantries and women’s shelters depends heavily on religious donations and volunteers…”
SOMETHING must have happened that led these people to live in a radically different way. What would possibly possess a person, much less a whole community, to put others first in everything? How could people give up luxury and reach out selflessly to those in need? People just don’t do that.
But love makes everything different. Love makes people do seemingly crazy things. Love is what led Jesus to give everything for us. It is that love which we are called to give away, because it was freely given to us. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. We remember not only the mercy God has extended to us, but God’s grand plan for us to be the conduit by which that mercy is shared with others! Pope Francis puts it concisely in The Joy of the Gospel: “The salvation which God offers us is the work of His mercy. No human efforts, however good they may be, can enable us to merit so great a gift. God, by His sheer grace, draws us to Himself and makes us one with Him. He sends His Spirit into our hearts to make us His children, transforming us and enabling us to respond to His love by our lives. The Church is sent by Jesus Christ as the sacrament of the salvation offered by God.”
So knowing this, we too can follow in Jesus’ footsteps, freely giving away what was first given to us. There may be suffering, there may be heartache, and eventually there will be death. But Jesus has broken even that barrier, and now we can follow Him through it to the path of victory He opened for us, “for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.”
-Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

Our Quarterly Special Needs collection this weekend is for our local St. Vincent de Paul.
St. Vincent de Paul is an association of lay employees and volunteers dedicated to serve the needy in our community. Our Neenah St. VdP helps over 4,500 of our neighbors in need each year. They take time to meet with people in need, finding ways to best help, and helping many find success. All who ask for assistance or come to the store are welcomed with dignity and respect.
Your continued generosity in supporting St. VdP is dearly appreciated. If you'd like to help beyond our collection, please consider volunteering! Visit svdpneenah.org or talk with Jim Zwicky 886-0083. Happy Easter!

“Daily Discipleship” News and Events for St. Gabriel Youth Ministry
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me. . .” Matthew 25:35. How many times do we see a passage of Scripture
come alive right before our own very eyes? How many times do we take a minute to notice those around us? How many times are we too busy to notice those who are suffering right in our very midst? Confirmation candidates are invited to continue serving the Corporal Works of Mercy and shelter the homeless on April 24, bringing this passage from Matthew alive! We will meet at St. Gabriel at 5:30 pm to create hygiene bags for the homeless in our community. Then we will caravan to downtown Appleton to hand out these bags. If you would like to support the teens in this Work, donations can be dropped off in the CFC office until April 23rd. Items needed for the hygiene bags include:
socks, granola bars, toothbrush/toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, combs, Kleenex, Tylenol, applesauce/plastic spoons, bar soap, raisins, cheese crackers, rain ponchos, water bottles, peanut butter, bread, small bags of chips/cookies
If you have questions, please email Brittany or Deacon Tom.
VandeWalle candy bars are still on sale in the CFC office during regular office hours. All proceeds will benefit our youth ministry department!

As you may know, GEIGER ST. and some neighboring streets are being entirely redone this week and ending in August. This is an opportunity to practice the Christian virtues of patience, hospitality, and positive attitudes as we deal with the inevitable difficulties that will come along. It’s a good time to be grateful for the infrastructure we have! Parish and school staff are working closely with the City of Neenah to accommodate our community and building needs during the project. While we can’t foresee every challenge, here are a few important highlights: WEEKENDS should generally have Geiger St. open for
CHURCH traffic (e.g. dropping passengers at circle drive-up). WEEKEND PARKING should be available in both lots. WEEKEND
street parking may be available, but could be messy. WEEKDAY traffic for SCHOOL will be communicated via
Mrs. Jeanine Leege, principal. WEEKDAY traffic for PARISH OFFICE will mostly go through
the WEST parking lot, using access from Green Bay Rd. WEEKDAY traffic for OTHER EVENTS (Bible Study, most
meetings) will generally go through the EAST parking lot, using access from Western Ave.
FUNERAL traffic will mostly be routed to the EAST parking lot (NO street parking), accessing from Western Ave. Exceptions may be made if we expect a particularly large attendance.
EVENING parking (not overnight!) may be available on Geiger Street.
We will try to keep the parish community updated. Please communicate any serious concerns to parish or school office. God bless you for your patience and understanding!
The Bible and the Sacraments. Join us for this beautiful DVD study examining the rich relationship between the Old and New
Testaments, it reveals the sacraments as more than mere earthly rituals. They are incredible “‘powers that come forth’ from the Body of Christ” (CCC 1116, St. Paul Center).
Thursdays 9:00 am & 6:30 pm begins April 5 Contact Julie Schmitz for more information – 722-4961.
No previous Bible study experience necessary. No need to make every session to participate.
