    A Time

to SpeakTere is a ime everyhing, and a season or every aciviyunder heaven: a ime o be silen and a ime o speak

    Ecclesiases 3:1,7

Mos o us are aware ha here are imes when we are o besilen. Jobs riends sa down on he ground wih Job orseven days and seven nighs wihou speaking a word.

Tis mus have been dicul bu he Bible explained hahis riends saw ha Jobs grie was very grea (Job 2:13).In he ime o grie, we oen appreciae our riends sayingwih us wihou hem having o say anyhing. In hesesiuaions, i is raher dicul o have o say somehing.

O course hey are also many who lack he wisdom andkeep saying he wrong hings. We oen describe hemas having oo in mouh disease. Te Foot in MouthAward is awarded each year by he Briish Plain EnglishCampaign or a baing commen by a public gure. Te

2006 award was won by supermodel Naomi Campbellwho said, I love England, especially he ood. Teresnohing I like more han a lovely bowl o pasa.

Someimes we have o remain silen, bu on oheroccasions we have o speak up. Wisdom is needed inorder o know when o speak and when o remain silen.

I have heard my secondary school principal, Mr DavidBoler, made he ollowing quoe several imes hroughoumy sojourn hrough he mischie and school boys prankso our een years. Once aer several obscene arworkswere ound in he boys oiles, he repeaed his quoe, Allha is needed or evil men o riumph is ha good men saynohing.

Mr Boler had reasoned ha hese grea works o arwould have aken hours o pain and could no have

been done wihou some o he sudens havingseen he perperaors. In our school assemblylaer, he cauioned he sudens who had seen hecrime o speak up and no o remain silen. Tosewho remain silen are acually encouraging hecommimen o crimes.

We mus speak up in order o push back he orceso evil. We mus also speak up or social injusice,or civil liberies and so on. I we do no speak up,he evil goes on and on In recen imes, manyin our naion have been emboldened o speak upor such reasons.

However, many o us are happy o speak wihinour privae circle o riends when we are no heldo accoun or wha is said. In public or in rono our superiors, we ake greaer care in wha wesay. Oen people who have a lo o say in privaeare speechless in public. Te Aposle Paul reerso hese as gossip and slander when peoplesrepuaion are desroyed behind heir backs. I wasa person no less han he Lord Jesus Himsel whosaid ha all men will have o give accoun on heday judgmen or every careless word hey havespoken (Mathew 12:36-37).

When we come o he issue o sharing our aih,mos believers have sudden atacks o he dreadeddea and dumb disease - dea as in he inabiliyo spo a winessing opporuniy and dumb asin he inabiliy o speak ou he good news wihour lips. I we do no nd a cure or his disease, people will simply no be saved. How, hen, canhey call on he one hey have no believed in?And how can hey believe in he one o whom hey

have no heard? And how can hey hear wihousomeone preaching o hem? (Romans 10:14).

One o he reasons why people speak up is becausehey are passionae abou somehing. Te propheJeremiah declares, his word is in my hear likea re, a re shu up in my bones (Jeremiah 20:9).Tis burning desire o he hear inames every breo our being and our lips will quie oen be he rso respond. David declared, My hear grew howihin me, and as I mediaed, he re burned; henI spoke wih my ongue: (Psalm 39:3 NIV). Jesusalso said, For ou o he abundance o he hear he

mouh speaks (Mat 12:34 NKJV).People will no say anyhing abou a subjec i heyhave no eelings abou i. I canno imagine hasomeone, aer lisening o a subjec o discussion, picking up a phone in anger and dialing and henshouing a he hearer on he oher end saying, Ihave no opinion on ha issue. People jus wonspeak up on an issue ha hey are no passionaeabou.

Te crowds cheered, danced and marched on hesrees in Madrid when Spain won he FIFA WorldCup his summer. Tas wha passion makespeople do. Tere is a disinc lack o passion in

he communiy o believers in sharing heir aih.Wihou his passion, many would preer o remainsilen or ranser heir passion o he ooballsadium. D.L. Moody possessed his passion whenhe said, I is he only happy lie o live or hesalvaion osouls.

Passion comes rom having a righ perspecive.Once several Briish clergymen approached Moodyo nd ou why his poorly educaed Americanwas so efecive in winning hrongs o people oChris. Moody ook he men o he window o hishoel room and asked each in urn o ell him whahey saw. One by one, he men described he peoplein he park down below. Ten Moody looked ouhe window and ears began coursing hrough hischeeks. Wha do you see, Mr. Moody? one o hemen asked. I see counless housands o soulsha will one day spend eerniy in hell i hey dono nd he Saviour.

Because he saw eernal souls where ohers only saw

people srolling in a park, Moody approached liewih a diferen agenda. He could see he unoldmillions perishing unold and he was passionaeenough o do somehing abou i.

Te ounder o EEInernaional, Dr DJames Kennedy, oncesaid, I God would dipall pasors in hell or aracion o a second . . . . . .

and hen yank hem up by heir shirtails -- as heyresanding here smouldering and heir clohes and

skin are ull o black soo, and heir shoes have halmeled of, I hink heir commimen o he GreaCommission would subsanially increase.

I is obvious ha passion and a correc perspecivewon save people. We need o perorm as well. Ihas been said ha aer all i s said and done, more issaid han done. Believers need o ake responsibiliyand jus do i!

Tis is a litle sory abou our people namedEverybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.Tere was an imporan job o be done andEverybody was sure ha Somebody would do i.

Anybody could have done i, bu Nobody did i.Somebody go angry abou ha because i wasEverybodys job. Everybody hough ha Anybodycould do i, bu Nobody realized ha Everybodywouldn do i.

I ended up ha Everybody blamed Somebodywhen Nobody did wha Anybody could have done.

Jesus ells a sory abou a man who asked his wosons o go and work in he vineyard (Mathew21:28-31). Te rs son iniially replied in henegaive bu nally did wha he aher waned.Te second son however, replied ha he willcomply bu ended up no doing he ahers will.Jesus hearers could see ha i was he rs son whoperormed and ulimaely he one who pleased heaher. We have been given he Grea Commission,o Go ino all he world and preach he good newso all creaion (Mark 16:15).

Te Psalmis declares ha our God is a speaking

God: Ten He shall speak o hem in His wrah,

and disress hem in His deep displeasure: (Psalm2:5 NKJV). Again, he mighy God, even heLORD, hah spoken. (Psalm 50:1) ruly in heselas days he has spoken o us by his Son, (Hebrews1:2). In he leter o he seven churches in hebook o Revelaions, Jesus is seen speaking o eacho he churches. My red ediion Bible is all read inRevelaions 2-3.

One o he marks o inegriy is ha we speak heruh. Can someone who ruly believe he word oGod ha says, or here is no oher name underheaven given o men by which we mus be saved(Acs 4:12) and No one comes o he Faher

excep hrough me (John 14:6) no speak ou ohe los? Te promise o he believer who desireso live on Gods holy hill is o he one who speakshe ruh rom his hear (Psalm 15:2).

In he end, he devil is deeaed by he word oheir esimony (Rev 12:11). Speak now, ororever hold your peace. oday is he ime o speak.

    Lead me o some soul oday,O each me, Lord, jus wha o say;

Friends o mine are los in sin,And canno nd heir way.

    Few here are who seem o care,And ew here are who pray;

Mel my hear, and ll my lie,Give me one soul oday.

rs hand. Less educaed, less lierae people andoral learners need ime o relae, o undersand,o break he ice and o accep our sharing. However, once hey are opened and engaged in heconversaion wih us, hey began o embrace heBible sories and oally convinced o he ruh in i.In our rs OJ, he gospel was shared over 2 dayswih he gardener cum cleaner o a school. Tenex day he brough wih him a riend who was asecuriy guard. I ook quie a while or us o sharehe gospel sories as each ime we were no surewheher he undersood hem. We have o keepguessing by observing his acial expression andbody language. However, we were boh surpriseand overjoyed when he waned o accep he Lordaer we compleed he gospel presenaion.

On separae occasions aer he Weavers EEraining, I had he experience o sharing o diferenFilipino axi drivers during my business rips oPhilippine. All o hem ook a liking o he soryelling and hey enjoyed i remendously. Teresul was hree proessions and one assurance.Praise God or he bouniul harves!Overall, I nd he Weavers EE raining was veryhelpul. I lled up he gaps I encounered in oherEE ools, especially o he less lierae and lesseducaed oral learners. Back in my church, we areconsidering implemening Weavers EE nex year.Tere are wo groups ha we inend o rain. One

is he English based group, where we nd mos oour members are more suied o he Weavers syleand approach o gospel sharing. Te oher groupwould be he Bahasa Migran Minisry. All o uswho had atended he raining will work wih ourElder o inroduce and implemen his wonderulevangelism ool.

Firs o all I wish o hank he Lord or heopporuniy o learn Weavers EE underhe guidance o Ed and Eleanor Beach.Learning Weavers EE is like coming hrough aull circle in he EE raining. From he Adul EEwhich is classical, mehodical, demanding andye comprehensive, hen I experienced he YouhEE, which I ound o a large exen is similar oAdul EE, bu has diferen sories and illusraionswhich are more suiable or he youh. Aer ha Icame across XEE which goes wih ime and rend, paricularly inended or he Generaions X & Y,who are generally porrayed as having he rais obeing less organized, less discipline and mos oall wan hings o be done insanly or in a shorduraion (can be an excuse or some prospecswho does no have atenion span). All hese oolsare excellen bu I nd ha hey are more suiableor hose who are educaed and lierae. As or heWeavers EE, is approach can caers or he widesspecrum o sociey. In oher words i appeals ohe broades base o people group, hereby makinghis ool appealing o a wider range o prospecs.

In my opinion, Weavers EE approach has heollowing advanages:

    1. I is relaxing, less arge oriened and also canbe used on same prospec repeaedly or OJpurpose. No pressure o complee sharing hegospel during each OJ.

    2. I is more engaging as i requires more ateniono build bridges wih prospecs and undersandhem beore he gospel sharing sars. Tis isparicularly imporan or oral learners (peoplewho are illierae or semi lierae) who orms hebigger specrum o people groups.

    3. Te gospel sories are Bible based, wihhe emphasis ha I is a rue sory and noconemporary sories. For example, he soryo creaion emphasizes he perec relaionshipbeween God, man and woman. Tis sory isexcellen o begin on a righ premise, suiable orprospecs rom any religious background, even oran aheis.

We should never sop reminding ourselves

ha i is no our doing bu God who provides herigh prospecs. We need o pray and he prayerparners are so vial in his minisry. We are alwayshankul or he prayer warriors who are behind uspraying or us weeks beore he semeser/clinic andalways encouraging us wih heir noes and gis oencouragemen.

A all imes, here should be a eam o wo orhree persons o work ogeher in his area oideniying and booking he conacs (prospecsor OJs) during he running o he EE rainingprogramme. A eam is always beter han someoneworking alone, no only i can avoid being sressuland overwhelming, a eam o workers enablebrainsorming where more creaive ideas andacion plans can be pu in place.

A imes, he eam may no be convenien omee up wih he prospec during he OJ. We

can always arrange or anoher day/ ime. Go heexra mile o using anoher day/ ime o mee heprospec .

In erms o logisic, i is no necessary o meehe prospec a home. We can mee or a drink or ameal in ca, kopiiam, mamak sall, ec.

As par o he learning process, rainees sudensshould be augh how o conribue personalriends, amily, colleagues or prospecs. In his way,EE is discipleship making as rainees (sudens)become shers-o-men. Oherwise, he raineewill no share he gospel on his/her own aer he

    semeser has been compleed.

I is always advisable o show couresy byinorming he prospec(s) ha you are meeinghe prospec(s) wih 2 oher riends. No needo speciy wha kind o riends. I he prospecshould ask, be hones o say ha hey are churchriends. I is alrigh i he prospec decides no omee jus because you are coming wih churchriends. Look ou or opporuniy o bring him/her o some church uncions so ha you ge achance o inroduce oher church riends o him/her. Hopeully he/she can be a ease i you suggesmeeing (OJ) nex ime.

Willingness o jus walk ino public placesand alk o srangers during OJs can be veryullling. Explore he possibiliy o old olkshomes, hospials, shopping malls, as ood oules, caeerias, ec.

Many imes he sruggle aced by heEE semeser/clinic coordinaor is oge enough suiable prospecs or he

On-Te-Job raining (OJ). EEM compile dsome suggesions & ips rom diferen EE acivechurches and we rus you will nd hem helpul.

o always inenionally orm relaionships andculivae riendship. We can organise gaheringsand dinners and invie our pre believer riends orellowship and discussions on opics o commonineres. For example our cell group recenlyorganised wo dinners and had discussions on woopics which are educaion and invesmen. CellGroup members invied heir pre believer riends. We can coninue o keep in ouch wih hem inuure & ideniy hem as OJ prospecs laer.

o go ou o visi he church neighbourhood ando ell hem abou he church and he aciviies/programmes in he church. Tere is a smallvisiaion eam in our church which does ha on

Saurday aernoons. Te eam does no do iregularly and i is very exible so i does no becomea burden o he eam members. Neverheless i isan efor o esablish conacs. From hose who areopen and recepive, he relaionship can lead o hepossibiliy o vi siing hem during OJs.

Communiy projecs and aciviies will bringpeople ino he church environmen. For exampleour church runs an early inervenion programmeor children wih learning disabiliies. Ping ponggames in he evenings our imes a week atracedmany people rom he communiy. Tis is again

anoher grea way o esablish conacs and iopporuniy arises, we can even do OJs wihin hechurch compound.

Keep a conac book wih phone numbers opoenial conacs. Te lising o hese pre believerscan be endless, hey can be your amily, relaives,riends/ acquainances, colleagues/ ex-colleagues,neighbours, barber/ hairdresser, mechanic, insurance agen, gardener, ec. Do no be shy o callhose wih poenials. Be persisen & keep calling.Someimes i akes a ew phone calls beore youge he response. Evenually some will respondposiively o your inviaion. Tis may sound oldashion bu i works wonders.

Do no be discouraged you ge appoinmenscancelled a he las minue. I always happens. Iis ok because he eam wihou a xed appoinmencan always do sree evangelism. Expec heunexpeced!!

Announce in he church he commencemendae o he EE raining programme. Encourageand reques members o sar providing deailso riends or conacs ha hey would like he EEeams o visi during he OJs. o bene rom heexising relaionship, hose providing he conacshould go along wih he EE eams.

For churches wih cell groups, conac rommembers o he same cell can be very handy. Tecell member who provides conacs can also joinhe EE eam or he OJs. Exising relaionshipprovides he bridge o build urher riendship.

EXCLUSIVEINTERVIEWWITH PASTOR GAIK SIMTHE FOLLOW UP COORDINATOR OF FGT(FULL GOSPEL TEBERNACLE, PJ)

new believer he ollow upper and he cell leader.Beore he new believer is ully assimilaed ino acare cell, he ollow upper is he primary person inouch wih he new believer and guiding him in hisgrowh.

In he assignmen o ollow upper and care cell,we ake ino consideraion he relaionship henew believer has wih he person who shared hegospel wih him or he person who brough himo church. In his way, we are srenghening anexising relaionship link.

EEM: What are the very rst things a ollow

upper should do when he is assigned anew believer?

He is o conac he new believer, usually wihinhe nex wo days, o mee up o give him a copy ohe bible, and o ofer o help him learn he basicso how o grow as a Chrisian. A ime conduciveo boh can be esablished or he sessions. Teollow upper mus be willing o adjus his schedulein order o ino he new believers ime. As heollow up proceeds, he ollow upper mus avoidcanceling he sessions.

EEM: What is the emphasis in the newbelievers lessons?

New believers are like new born babies. Whababies need is milk. We should no orce eedhem mea. Te lessons should also be shor, abou 45 minues each session. In he early yearso our church, we ried o cover so many opics hawe had as many as 16 very long lessons, unil we

realized ha really wha he spiriual baby needs ismilk. God was so good o us some survived andare sill wih us oday!

We now have only 7 lessons. Tere are many oherraining and seminars conduced in church wherehey can receive mea as hey grow seadily.

EEM: What should a ollow upper do when heencounters reluctance or even resistance romthe new believer?

I he new believer does no wan o proceed wih

one-o-one ollow up despie concered efor andencouragemen, he ollow upper can coninueo build iendship and encourage him o atendchurch. Perhaps a a laer ime he can make anoheratemp. Bu here will be imes we have o comeo erms wih he ac ha he salvaion was nogenuine.

EEM: What would you encourage the ollowupper to do oen?

Te ollow upper mus be one who is inspiraional. He should share personal esimoniesspecic o helessons, such as answered prayers, Gods nancial

blessings as he obeyed he Lord in ihing andgiving oferings and he help and encouragemenhe received rom ellowship. Tis helps o buildaih in he Word o God and moivae hem opracice he habis o spiriual mauriy.

EEM: Is there any advice you would like togive to ollow uppers?

Avoid Chrisian jargon. Always pray and ask Godor wisdom and discernmen or your ollow upsessions. Be cheerul and posiive. Never make henew believer eel i is a burden or you o spendime wih him. Pray wih him and or him everyime you mee.

EEM: Beore we end our conversation, is theresome observation you wish to share with thoseo us involved in EE ministry?

Chrisians are oen old o share he gospel so hawe can save souls. Bu litle or insucien atenion

is given o helping he new believers grow. Believersare commissioned o make disciples. Tis involveswinning he losand developing he saved.oooen he church is passionae abou w inning soulsbu does no make he same efor o help newbelievers become maure Chrisians.

Personally, i has been ulfllingor me o see newbelievers grow, maure and evenually serve inchurch, especially when hey were your babies. Some become ollow uppers and care cell leadersaer a ew years. I know his would no be possiblei hey were no well ollowed up.

EEM: What is FGTs philosophy on newbelievers ollow up?

A FG, we see one-o-one ollow up as he spiriualwork o grounding a new believer in he aih. Aollow upper is assigned o every new believer. Wehave ollow uppers or all ages o new believers he children, youh, young aduls and aduls. Everynew believer is paired wih an appropriae ollowupper.

FG believes ha efecive one-o-one ollow up ishe key o a lie o discipleship or a new believer. We have ound ha 80% of new believers whocompleted one-to-one follow up will continue to be

    regular in church.

Te pracice in FG is ha all care group or cellleaders and heir assisans (eam members)

mus be rained as ollow uppers beore hey areappoined o cell leadership. Te premise is hacell leaders mus have a hear o care and disciplehose new in he aih.

EEM: How do you identiy a good ollow upper?

Te qualiies ha we look or is a shepherds hearand he willingness o care or new believers. Hemus be spiriually maure, and be able o modelhe lie o a disciple a all imes; supporive o hechurchs leadership and vision, regular a churchservices, prayer meeings and cell group meeings.

EEM: How do you train ollow uppers?

In FG, a would-be ollow upper is personallyidenied and invied o paricipae in he FollowUp Clinic when hey mee he above crieria.

Te Follow Up Clinic conduced by FG covershe 10Ms o doing one-o-one ollow up. opicscovered include Mandae, Minisry Philosophy,Mehod, Menoring, Maerials ec. Te underlyingobjecives o he Follow Up Clinic are o develop ahearo care or he young in aih and being andreproducing he model disciple. Tis is a one anda hal day raining programme (usually a ull day onSaurday plus Sunday aernoon) and paricipansare expeced o atend all sessions.

Whils his raining is or FG churches we haveexended i o oher churches who have expressed

    ineres.

EEM: Can you describe briefy the entire ollowup process?

When a person is saved wheher i is duringalar calls a worship service, evangelisic evens, personal evangelism or EE clinics and EE semesers- Pasor Jenny Liew, who oversees he ollow upwork ogeher wih me will be noied. She willimmediaelyideniy and assign a suiable ollowupper or he new believer based on his personalpariculars. We will also assign him o a care cell.As such, here will be wo persons o care or he

is simpler and ows beter alhough I el ha wecan sressed more on he explanaion o SIN. Ouo he our prospecs my eam visied, God gave ushe privilege o lead wo o say he Sinners Prayer.

Tere are many pre-believers ou here who areseeking and need o hear he gospel presenedin a comprehensive way and hen be challengedo accep Jesus as heir Savior. I ound he XEEgospel presenaion one o he mos efeciveevangelism ool. Te on-he-job raining visiaionswih my rainer have given me more condenceand renewed in me he burden o share Chriswih ohers.

Anoher wonderul hing is ha we are no goingou alone, knowing ha we have riends whouphold us in erven prayers in his spiriual batle. We jus need o be obedien, inconvenienced even,o be gospel oo soldiers and mouhpieces. Evangelism is oen hough as o ulll he GreaCommission ha Chris le or His believers. Bu

Ive come o realize ha evangelism is no as simpleas i seems. Wha Ive learned is ha I canno ulllhe Grea Commission wihou abiding in he GreaCommandmen. Love God, know His passion orhe los, and hen convey His love o hose peoplewe evangelize o; is ar more essenial han juseaching he Gospel ou o our own wisdom andadequacy. Chris sen us he Holy Spiri as a helpero us. I believe ha every believer has he Spiri oevangelism lying deep inside us.

XEE is no jus a ool or inormaion or us o usewhen desired. XEE is an explosive programmewhich awakens he Spiri o Evangelism in all he

paricipans!! We can use is knowledge as a powersource efecively o miniser o he los. Tis oolequipped us o efecively connec ogeher bohour Faher and he los; i.e. people He longed oresore relaionship wih.

XEE augh me o align my houghs and words inpresening he Gospel. Is approach is helpul asi gave me a clear picure o wha is o be shared. No only ha, he power o God was maniesedduring our connec aciviy. My eam consiss oMoses Elango, rainer rom Dala Inernaional andmysel. All o our connec aciviies were carriedou a he Rie Range Aparmen. Indeed God

has undeniably showed His power o shine in hedarkness. We prayed or guidance and wisdom owords rom he Lord and spoke o people accordingo His appoinmen. Among he prospecs, somehad acceped our Lord as heir Savior.

Is an overwhelming joy o see people coming oknow Chris. When we were a he aparmen, Isaw people who are so los and hungry or hope.Tey were so desperae ha hey seemed eager oembrace in any supernaural power hey can grabhold o! I promped me o hink ha i we asChrisians sill hide ourselves selshly around heour walls o our church, we are no worhy o becalled believers o Chris. Te siuaion ges worswhen we Chrisians have doub wheher we can bea vessel or God o evangelize o people. Who heni no we?

During he raining, I learned ha we need o haveha paradigm shi and know or cerain ha ourFaher longs o see us go exra miles o save he los

hrough evangelism. As such, all believers o all agesshould ake up he passion o seek and save he los.

XEE has augh me many echniques o evangelize. However, is really he re li hrough he course

ha promps me o go exra miles, sharing heGood News o my riends whenever and whereverpossible. All glory be uno our Lord.
