“Hey, Takashi!” He turned around. “You like soccer, too?” I asked. That was the

first time I saw him smile. As a result of our conversation, he invited me to

come to his house on Saturday.

I rang the bell and Takashi opened the door. It was an ordinary house, not

too big and not too small. Two men were sitting on the floor watching TV and

drinking tea. One of them looked familiar. Then I realized who it was the

coach of the national soccer team! My mouth went dry and I didn’t know what

to say.

“Is that...?” I started to say and then stopped. Takashi smiled. “Yes, it is.

My dad went to school with him. Actually, he comes over here quite often. We

are playing soccer tomorrow at the park. Why don’t you join us?”

The next day I went to the park. I was so nervous! Takashi and his father

were standing at the end of a large field with about twenty-five other people.

The coach was there, too. We made two teams and started to play. Everyone

was good, but I was really impressed by Takashi. He was so much better than

me! He could pass and shoot the ball like the adults. After the game I asked

him how he had gotten so good. He smiled and looked at the coach. “Why don’t

you ask him?” Hearing this, the coach smiled at us.

“The secret to success,” he said, “is easy. Like I told Takashi, you have to

have a dream. Then you have to work hard to make it come true. That’s it!”

And then he laughed. It was simple, and I still remember those words even now.

That’s when I decided my dream was to play professional soccer. Takashi and I

shared that dream and we practiced together every day. We worked hard, harder

than anyone else. I guess the coach was right, because we both succeeded in

making our dreams come true!

千と千尋の物語は、話の舞台が湯屋から沼の底へ移動するにつれて、さらに深い世界につながっていきます。これを読み

取らなければならないわけですが、いきなりでは、扱いかねる難物です。

そこで、暗示的なケースを引いてみましょう。カフカの『変身』という作品です。村上春樹の『海辺のカフカ』の◯うボタイ

でもあります。異郷訪問型らしからぬ作品ですが、話型に合わせて読んでみると、おもしろいことに気づきます。

この短編が異郷訪問型になっているのであれば、グレーゴルは、いつか元の姿に戻らなければなりません。当然、わたし

たちはそれを期待しながら読んでいきます。ところがなかなか元にはもどれません。それどころか、とうとう虫のままで死

んでいきます。不条理小説と呼ばれるゆえんでしょう。読者に希望を与えない、暗い作品です。

�ところが、この小説はけっこう明るい雰囲気で終わっているのです。

その明るさはどこからくるのでしょうか。あらためて読み返すと、巨大な昆虫の出現でめちゃめちゃになったザムザ家の

生活が、ようやく

を取り戻し、のみならずグレーゴルの稼ぎにたよっていた家族は◯えジリツして快活な人生を送

り始めています。つまり、家族に焦点を合わせれば、この短編はれっきとした異郷訪問型になるわけです。

先に、読むということについて、話の筋書き（ストーリーあるいはプロット）を読み取ることと、話の仕組み（メカニズ

ム）を読み取ることの、二通りの読み方があることを述べました。表の読みと、裏の読みです。裏の読みは、深読みと言っ

そうではありません。そこにいたる◯おケイイは、昆虫になったグレーゴルの回想のなかで、ちゃんと語られているのです。

外から見れば甲虫ですが、堅い殻に閉じこめられたグレーゴルは、身動きを奪われているだけに、なおさら自分といっしょ

うけんめいに対話しています。

彼は仕事に追いまくられるセールスマンでした。それで家族を養っています。しかし、彼はその「辛気くさい商売」で自

分が「うすばか」になってしまったと思っています。彼はいやいやながら仕事をしていました。職場は不本意な世界だった

のです。家族を養うためにむりやり身を投じた場所であり、一刻も早く、彼はそこから脱出したかったのです。

グレーゴルが回想の中で語るこのような内容は、仕事であくせくはたらく彼の日常を異郷とすれば、法則にだいたい当て

はまります。つまり、いやいやながら出勤する会社で、人間味のない異常な体験をして、なんとかそこから脱出したいと思

う、といったかたちになります。そして、

い。したがって関連しない情報は、いちいち確かめることなく、◯うタンテキに無視しなければならない。では、課題に関連す

る情報とそうでない情報を効率的に区別して、関連する情報だけをうまく考慮するようにするにはどうすればよいだろうか。

これがフレーム問題である。

人間はほとんどフレーム問題に悩まされることがない。おのずとそれを解いている。しかし、フレーム問題に悩まされな

いロボットを作るとなると、これが超難問である。�フレーム問題が有名になったのも、この困難のゆえである。課題に関連

する情報とそうでない情報を区別する能力をロボットに与えなければ、もちろんロボットは重要な情報を考慮し損ねて失敗

するが、そうかといってその能力を与えてやると、今度は、無数にある情報について、それらが課題に関係するかどうかを

いちいち確認するという作業を延々と続けて、いつまでたっても何もしようとしない「ハムレット状態」に陥ってしまう。

�人間がこのようなハムレット状態に陥ることはまずない。では、人間はどのようにして課題に関連する情報とそうでない

情報を効率的に区別しているのだろうか。その鍵を握るのがおそらく情動だと考えられる。人間の場合、ある課題を◯えスイコ

ウしようとすると、その課題に関連する情報は興味深く感じられ、そうでないものはそうではない。たとえ無意識的にせよ、

関連する情報は興味・関心を引き起こす。こうして情動によりおのずと関連する情報とそうでない情報がふるい分けられ、

関連する情報だけが際立ったものとして意識にのぼり考慮されるようになる。この一つの重要な証拠となるのが、注１ダマ

が◯おショウサイに研究して広く知られるようになった、脳の前頭前野の腹内側部を損傷した患者の振る舞いである。脳のこの

ものにすぎないのではないか。こうして批判的思考は純粋に理性的な心の働きによるのだという考えがまったく当然のよう

に思えてくる。しかし、本当にそうだろうか。

批判的思考には、対象への鋭敏な注意と、必要な情報の徹底した収集が必要だ。ある論文にデータの捏造や論理の◯あヒヤク

がないかどうかを批判的に吟味しようとすれば、論文の隅々にまで注意を行き渡らせ、論文の内容に関連する情報を記憶の

よみがえ

倉庫から蘇らせ、さらに他の論文や著作から必要な情報を探り出さなければならない。

このような鋭敏な注意と徹底した情報収集は情動によってはじめて可能になる。われわれは当該の論文が示す成果に驚き

や疑惑の
