Wh en su m m ers in t h e city,
An d b ricks a blaze of h ea t,
Th e Ice-cream Man with h is little cart
Goes trundling down the street .
Benea th h i s rou nd u mbre lla ,
Oh, what a joyful sight,To see him fill the cones with mounds
Of coolin g brown an d wh ite:
Van illa, ch ocolat e, s tra wberry,
Or ch illy thin gs to dr in k
From bottles full of frosty-fizz,
Green, oran ge, wh ite, or pin k.
His cart might be a flower bed,
Of roses an d s weet peas ,
The way the children cluster round
As th ick as h oneybees.

Folk tales
Multi-cu ltura l ap proa ch to food
To avoid wa st age of food
In every country of the world, there are stories which have been handed down from
grandparents to grandchildren or which have been sung by mothers to their babies.
These stories are called an d tell us about the custom s an d culture of the place
they are set in.
A Kerala folk tale and a Sa nt ha l folk ta le h ave been retold in th is un it. The tea cher
sh ould encou rage children to read folk tales from d ifferen t par ts of th e cou nt ry. The
mother tongue can be given i ts due place by being used for discussion and
u nders tan ding, a long with teach ing of English .
The an d act ivit ies sh ould be done throu gh imitat ion the teacher
f i rs t and then the chi ldren. Poems could be reci ted in groups. They may also be
present ed thr ough dr am atisat ion, a ct ions e tc . in th e school ass embly. The ch ildren
can make big cutouts of ice creams and vegetables or dress up as par t icular
vegetables or ice-cream a nd recite the poem. You cou ld think of a s u itable rhythm for
the poem.
Th e section can begin with a discu ssion sta rted by the teacher, in th is cas e
on environment and recycling of waste. This can be done with the help of a
practical example of children making paper bags from old newspaper. These
bags could be given to the n eighbourh ood provision s tore to be us ed instead of
plastic bags. Remem ber, paper ba gs are en vironm ent friendly. Old n ewspapers
can also be used to make envelopes of different sizes and masks for school
plays.
When we use s everal sentences to te l l o thers a bout someth ing that we ha ve
seen, read, hear d or done, it is cal led a report . For the teacher ,
along with t he ch ildren , sh ould first go th rou gh th e report on Uncle Lal 's far m. The
chi ldren can then do the gu ided report on ice creams a vai lable in their area or on
food, toysh ops, soap s, som e an imal, care of pets etc.
A creative activity sh ould b e followed by a pres enta tion before th e ent ire clas s.
The poems, recipes , the f indings of any task etc . could be done as group
