Evolution of Broad-Band
The confluence of 2 forces – Globalization of business
and the networking of information technology - has
created the internet economy
The new economy is defining how people do business,
communicate, shop, have fun, learn and live on a global
basis–CONNECTING ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
For internal circulation of BSNL only
basis–CONNECTING ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
As the internet market continues to explode, the demand
for greater bandwidth and faster connection speeds has
led to the need to provide broadband access to the end
users.
One of the latest trends in enhancing
communication systems involves broadband
technology
Broadband refers to greater bandwidth-or
transmission capacity of a medium
Evolution of Broad-Band

transmission capacity of a medium
Broadband technology will allow for high-speed
transmission of voice, video, and data over
networks like the Internet

TRAI DEFINITION OF BROADBAND
•An ‘always-on’ data connection supportinginteractive services including
– Internet access and has the capability of the
minimum download speed of 256 kilo bits per
second (kbps) to an individual subscriber from the
Point Of Presence (POP) of the service provider.
For internal circulation of BSNL only
Point Of Presence (POP) of the service provider.
– The interactive services will exclude any services
for which a separate licence is specifically
required, for example, real-time voice
transmission, except to the extent that it is
presently permitted under ISP licence with Internet
Telephony.”
ADVANTAGES OF BROADBAND
Always on (Not a Shared Media)
Fast (speed ranging from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps)
No disconnection
No additional access charge
For internal circulation of BSNL only
Telephone and Data simultaneously
Fat Pipe has to be continuously supplemented
with value added applications to enjoy the
advantage.
WIRED BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES
Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL)
Cable Modem (CM)
Fiber Technology (FITL)
Power line Broadband(BPL)
For internal circulation of BSNL only
DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE (DSL)
• Digital Subscriber line (DSL) is a wire line
transmission technology that brings data and
information faster over copper telephone lines
already installed in homes and business.
For internal circulation of BSNL only
• DSL exploits "extra capacity" to carry information
on the wire without disturbing the line's ability to
carry conversations.
xDSL FAMILY TREE
xDSL
Symmetric DSL
Provide identical data rates upstream & downstream
Asymmetric DSL
Provide relatively lower rates upstream but higher
rates downstream
For internal circulation of BSNL only
rates downstream
Types of xDSL :
HDSL - High data rate Digital Sub: Line
SDSL - Symmetrical Digital Sub: Line
ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Sub: Line
IDSL - ISDN Digital Sub: Line
VDSL - Very-high-data-rate Digital Sub: Line
SDSL
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line
Used typically for business applications
For internal circulation of BSNL only
such as video conferencing.
The data rate in both directions is equal.
ADSL
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line
Used primarily by residential users who receive a
lot of data but do not send much such as Internet
surfers.
For internal circulation of BSNL only
ADSL provides faster speed in a downstream
direction (from the telephone central office to the
customer’s premises) than upstream (from
customer’s premise to the telephone central
office).
HDSL
High Data Rate Digital Subscriber Line
Provides fixed symmetrical high-speed access
at T1 rate (1.5 Mbps).
Designed for business purposes

VDSL
Very High Data Rate Digital Subscriber Line
Provides both symmetrical and asymmetrical
access with very high bit rate over the copper

line.
IDSL
ISDN Digital Subscriber Line
Provides symmetrical connection with
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
Designed to extend DSL to locations with a
long distance to a telephone central office.

DSLAM
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer.
Equipment located at a phone company’s central
office (CO).

DSLAM
Intermixes voice frequency signals and high-speed
DSL data traffic into a customer’s DSL line.
Separates incoming phone and data signals and
directs them onto the appropriate carrier’s network.
Voice calls are sent to the PSTN, and data are

DSLAM is connected to Internet Backbone for
access to World Wide Web and other applications.
BSNL’S BROADBAND ACCESS TECHNOLOGY
BSNL has a world class, multi-gigabit, multi-
protocol, convergent IP infrastructure – The NIB.
BSNL Broadband service provides convergent
services through this backbone network.
For internal circulation of BSNL only
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
Technology is used for giving the Broadband
connection where greater download is required in
comparison to upload.

EFFECT OF COPPER PAIR QUALITY
Data speed capability depends on the
thickness of wire used in cable network.
Higher the gauge, higher the data carrying
speed.
Data speed deteriorates if copper loop quality
For internal circulation of BSNL only
Data speed deteriorates if copper loop quality
is bad i.e. more joints, loose joints, low
insulation etc.

operators) offers shared bandwidth.
Speed is asymmetric and will vary depending on the
number of people on the network.

How BSNL VOD is better than DTH?
BSNL VoD
The set-top box is like a DVD player.
The viewer can select a movie from the list and
view it at his / her desired time and day, pause
it, rewind it, forward it .
For internal circulation of BSNL only
it, rewind it, forward it .
Can have exactly the same experience as
viewing from a personalized DVD player.
How BSNL VOD is better than DTH?
DTH
Request for VOD has to be registered through
some other means than the Set top Box .
Limited number of movies are broadcasted and
the viewers have to choose among them
For internal circulation of BSNL only
the viewers have to choose among them
Movies are telecast at predefined timings.
DO'S AND DON’TS
Do's
1. No phone/Fax should be connected before splitter.
2. Change your password regularly
3. Remember or write down your password after every change
of password.
4. Check your usages detail regularly..

modem when not in use.
Dont's
Do not disclose your broadband User ID and
Password to anybody.
SOME CONCEPTS
Single User (SU):
Only one PC can be connected to BSNL Broadband connection.
Multi User (MU):
Customer is allowed to share one BSNL broadband connection among
multiple PCs
Static IP address:
For internal circulation of BSNL only
For many services such as video conferencing, VPN etc. a fixed IP known as
Static IP is required.
Dynamic IP:
For normal Internet browsing, the customer does not require static IP. BSNL
allocates temporary IP address to the customer when a session is initiated.
SPEED CHECK
Customer is assured of promised speed.
Customer can check speed for their connection at
link http://www.dataone.in/.
The check is performed by measuring the speed of
a file transfer.
For internal circulation of BSNL only
a file transfer.
The file transfer is counted towards download limit.
DATA USAGE
It is the aggregate of data uploaded and
downloaded through broadband connection.
The Data Usage is accounted in GB (Giga Bytes).
For internal circulation of BSNL only
A customer subscribed for Games on Broadband,
the data usage is normally not charged separately

SET TOP BOX
The set-top box is a smart solid-state device that
acts as the gateway to a host of services offered
on the BSNL Multiplay network.
Set-top box interfaces with the television using the
3-RCA or the S-Video ports, and to broadband

1. The technology used to transmit voice conversations over
a data network using the Internet Protocol.
2. A category of hardware and software that enables people
to use the Internet as the transmission medium for
telephone calls.

telephone calls.
3. VoIP works through sending voice information in digital
form in packets,
4. VoIP also is referred to as Internet telephony, IP
