The EE network works best with a 3G compatible device (i.e. a 3G or 4G device). Our 2G and 3G networks have slightly different coverage footprints, so 3G devices offer better coverage and reliability by being able to use both the 2G and 3G networks for voice calls (as well as data). We therefore recommend that customers should only consider SIM only options if their device fleet is already 3G capable. 2G only devices may not get our best network experience.

This page is here to explain the key terms used throughout this device pricebook to support you in selecting a device that is best suited to your business needs.

Below you will find descriptions of terminology surrounding coverage, operating systems and software.

Connectivity and receptionAll devices come as standard with basic 2G voice and data capabilities. Standard 2G data is sometimes described as GPRS, the following tables outline whether the device also supports:

• 4G Plus – LTE-A capable devices can aggregate 20MHz of radio spectrum at 1,800MHz and 20MHz at 2,600MHz, for even greater bandwidth and speed. Devices are capable of maximum download speeds of 300Mbps and real life speeds are typically up to 90Mbps

• Double Speed 4G – Utilises double the radio spectrum (20MHz) to data increase speeds over the original 4G. Devices are capable of maximum download speeds of 150Mbps and real life speeds are typically up to 60Mbps

• 4GEE – is the fourth generation of phone technology which improves download/upload speeds by up to 5x over 3G. Devices are capable of maximum download speeds of 100Mbps and real life speeds are typically up to 30Mbps.

• WiFi – is a wireless technology enabling devices, such as a personal computer or smartphone, to connect to the Internet via a WiFi router

• 3G+ – sometimes described as HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access), is a mobile phone techonology which provides high-speed internet access and data transfer. HSDPA refers to ‘download’ and HSUPA refers to ‘upload’

• 3G – is a mobile phone technology which provides fast Internet access and transmission of text, digitised voice, video, and multimedia

• EDGE – is a 2G mobile phone technology that increases data transmission and improves reliability. EE is one of

only two UK providers of this enhanced technology

• BT – Bluetooth (BT) is a proprietary open wireless technology exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices

International connectivityNetworks in other countries, and even within the UK, work on different frequencies. When you’re going abroad you need to make sure that your phone is compatible with at least the local 2G network. There are four types of compatibility of European ph ones:

• Dual band – most European phones are at least dual band which means that they will work across Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia where all networks operate on one of two frequencies

• Japan and South Korea – these countries don’t support 2G coverage at all. You’ll need a 3G phone in Japan and South Korea where the frequency is the same as it is in Europe

• Tri band – is a mobile phone technology which provides fast Internet access and transmission of text, digitised voice, video, and multimedia

• Quad band – these phones support four frequencies meaning they will operate across almost all the countries in the world

This document only refers to 2G frequency bands unless otherwise stated. There are also different bands for 3G coverage in the Americas which means that some phones will not be able to support fast data download when you’re visiting there.

Location technology • A-GPS – Assisted GPS improves the performance of a

GPS satellite-based positioning system by also using mobile signal to establish location. It’s particularly useful in urban areas where satellite signal is distorted by tall buildings

• GPS – Global Positioning System technology allows your device to use signals from satellites to establish your

phone’s location

Operating systemsA mobile operating system, also known as a mobile OS, a mobile platform, or a handheld operating system, is the operating system that controls a mobile device or information appliance – similar in principle to an operating system such as Windows, Mac OS, or Linux that controls a desktop computer or laptop.

• Android – is an operating system owned by Google and used by a range of manufacturers. It’s an open source system that’s the most popular smartphone OS in the world (Q4 2012)

• Proprietary – a proprietary operating system is one created by device manufacturer’s for use with their devices. One such example of this is Nokia’s OS

• Windows – Microsoft have been developing operating systems for business mobiles for many years. The two main versions on the market today are Windows Mobile 6.5, Windows Phone 7 and now Windows Phone 8

• iOS – Businesses around the world are choosing iOS devices for their enterprise-ready features and powerful security. iOS works with Microsoft Exchange and standards-based servers to deliver over-the-air push email, calendar and contacts. iOS protects your data by encrypting information in three separate areas: in transmission, at rest on the device and when backed up to iTunes. You can securely access private corporate networks through industry-standard VPN protocols. And companies can easily deploy iPhone across an enterprise using configuration profiles

• BlackBerry® – BlackBerry 10 will help your team work more efficiently and respond faster. The smart and socially integrated BlackBerry® Hub, calendar, and contacts apps provide instant and relevant updates to keep you in the know about the people who matter most to your business. Email softwareEmail software is used to connect an email account with a device so your people can manage their mailbox as if working directly from a PC or laptop.

• MS Mail – Some phones come loaded with Microsoft compatible software that allows users to access their business Exchange Server. They can get their company email, calendar and contacts, that they’d normally access through outlook on a computer, sent to their phones

• Nokia Mail for Exchange – Mail for Exchange synchronizes your business’s Microsoft Exchange accounts so employees can use their Microsoft Exchange inbox, calendar and contacts on their Nokia mobile devices

• BES – BlackBerry® Enterprise Service is a special piece of mobile software that, when used with a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server allows users to access company mail from a Microsoft Exchange email server or even a Novell Groupwise email server or IBM Lotus Domino email server

• BES Express – BlackBerry® Enterprise Service Express enables access to company email on Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino email servers from a users mobile

• BIS – BlackBerry® Internet Service as a special version of POP3/IMAP4 email access on BlackBerry® phones

• Mobile Mail with EE – is a special EE version of POP3/IMAP4 email access (see below)

• POP3 and IMAP4 – email software for access to web-based mail from places like your internet provider, Hotmail, Googlemail, Yahoo or any other email that you can access through the public internet. Most phones come loaded with the manufacturers own version of software for accessing this sort of email

• Active Sync – Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 is the latest sync software release for Windows Mobile-powered devices. ActiveSync provides a great synchronization experience with Windows®-powered PCs and Microsoft Outlook right out of the box. Note: Microsoft ActiveSync works only with Windows XP SP2 or earlier

What is WiFi Calling?EE are proud to be the first network in the UK to offer WiFi Calling – the simplest way for you and your employees to make calls, without signal. WiFi Calling allows those with a compatible phone, a 4GEE plan and a WiFi connection to make business calls from a handset, even when you’re working in a place with poor reception. It gives you great coverage indoors and is simple and straightforward to set up. So your teams can get going straight away – being more productive, in the places they need to be.

How does it work?Your device will automatically switch to WiFi Calling when a WiFi connection is available. So if you have a pre-configured connection, you’ll never have to worry about losing signal. You dial as normal, and calls and texts will be charged or included according to your current mobile plan. What’s more, WiFi Calling is simple to use and really easy to set up. There are no 3rd party apps to download, or any other equipment like signal boxes. Once you have a 4GEE plan and compatible device, all you need to do is simply turn on WiFi Calling and make calls as normal. Flexibility and productivityWiFi Calling is all about doing more business, with confidence, when you’re on the move. It gives you more connectivity options by allowing anyone in your organisation to work from home whilst staying connected. Keeping in frequent contact with clients and colleagues will also keep customer satisfaction high, and increase your overall productivity. With WiFi Calling, you can make calls from any place that suits you. Branch out from the office and work from home (it’s especially helpful if you have poor signal in your house), or visit libraries and cafés – anywhere that’s convenient. And because you have the choice to work in different places, you can get more done, and keep more flexible working hours.

Who can get WiFi Calling?Anyone can get WiFi Calling – you may already have it. All you need is a 4GEE plan and one of the following handsets: Apple iPhone 6s & 6s plus, iPhone 6 & 6 plus, Phone 5s & 5c, HTC M9, Microsoft Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. And EE are adding more compatible devices all the time.

There are some products that aren’t compatible with WiFi Calling right now, including: Voice VPN, Freedom and Mobile Voice Recording. Just give an EE team member a call or visit our website for details.

WI-FI CALLING NO SIGNAL? NO PROBLEM


Some buildings, along with certain construction materials, simply weren’t designed to let mobile signals through. So we have developed a comprehensive range of simple, scalable and affordable solutions that can deal with a range of building sizes and purposes, so your staff can always get the indoor coverage they need. These include:

Signal Booster. Get a weak 3G signal in parts of the office? Choose Signal Booster. If you already get a weak a signal in parts of your office then choose a Signal Booster. The clue is in the name – it boosts any 3G signal you already have into a full 3G signal, so people throughout your office can talk, text or go online at the same time. You don’t need a broadband connection. Just put the receiver unit where there is 3G coverage and the transmitter nearby where there isn’t. That will spread a full 3G signal around your office.

Signal Box. Got a small office or home workers that don’t get any signal? Choose Signal Box. Plug it into your broadband router or office LAN and it creates its own link to our network. In less than an hour you get a full 3G signal that four people can use at the same time, up to 15 metres away. A signal box is a great low-cost solution that works with any 3G phone, like all the latest smartphones. There’s no need manage access lists of who is allowed to use the signal and it won’t change your call, text and data charges.

Office Signal Box. Need a 3G solution for a few more users? The Office Signal Box also creates a full 3G signal for talking, texting and being online. 16 people can make calls simultaneously and up to 40 metres away, enough to keep a medium to large office connected – depending on how many users want to make calls at once. To make sure you get the best possible signal throughout, we’ll also come and professionally install it for you.

Bespoke Signal Solutions. Talk, text and get online in every nook and cranny of your building. Every office is different. If it’s a big office you might need a combination of boxes and boosters. Or a special one that you can’t get off the shelf. With access to the full catalogues of our network suppliers’ equipment, we’ll happily design and build a bespoke 2G, 3G or 4G solution for you, with all the transmitters, aerials and links you need. So your people can always talk, text and get online in every nook and cranny of your building.
