Longer days filled with sun, fun, family and friends contribute a great deal to one’s growth and development. As educators, we want to make sure that all of our students have an exciting and enriching summer. In addition, we want to help our students maintain the skills and abilities they acquired this past school year. To this end, every student in grades PK-2 is receiving a summer assignment that we are confident will keep them reading and enjoying literature while not interfering too greatly on their free time. You can download the “Incoming First Grade” Summer Assignment from our website at www.springfieldschools.com/3/home. Additionally, every student is to continue to read and log his or her minutes; a summer reading log was sent home earlier this week. Students are expected to bring the completed summer assignment and reading log to school when they return on September 7 th . Have a happy and healthy summer! Sincerely, Dr. Susie Hung

Dear Kindergarten Parents/Guardians,
The summer months are a special time in a young child’s life.
Longer days filled with sun, fun,
family and friends contribute a great deal to one’s growth and
development. As educators, we
want to make sure that all of our students have an exciting and
enriching summer. In addition,
we want to help our students maintain the skills and abilities they
acquired this past school year.
To this end, every student in grades PK-2 is receiving a summer
assignment that we are
confident will keep them reading and enjoying literature while not
interfering too greatly on their
free time. You can download the “Incoming First Grade” Summer
Assignment from our
website at www.springfieldschools.com/3/home. Additionally, every
student is to continue to
read and log his or her minutes; a summer reading log was sent home
earlier this week.
Students are expected to bring the completed summer assignment and
reading log to school when
they return on September 7th.
Have a happy and healthy summer!
Sincerely,

Suggested Summer Reading for Incoming First Graders
Summer reading is essential for a successful school experience.
Learning to read takes practice and research shows children who
read the most, read the best. Attached is a chart of recommended
reading based on lists of nationally recognized, notable, and award
winning children’s literature for children in kindergarten. These
books can be read to, by, or with your child depending on their
reading ability. Please log the books read, along with minutes
read, into your summer reading log which will be returned to next
year’s teacher. Remember, there are many ways to help your child
develop life-long reading habits and improve or maintain literacy
skills children have learned during the school year. We encourage
you to discuss each book with your child to help bring it to life.
To help foster a love for reading, we suggest the following:
• Let your child select the books to read. • Visit local bookstores
and the public library often. • Set aside a designated reading
time. Try reading in a fun place like under a tree
or at the beach. • Show your child reading is important and you
like to read (a good book, the
newspaper, a magazine, etc.). • Read to your child. Model what you
are thinking as you read. • Make a connection by having your child
draw pictures and tell you about the book. • Repetition – Reread a
book to build reading fluency and confidence.
How to Choose a Book to Read: 1. The cover looks interesting or
illustrations grab you. 2. The title gets your attention. 3.
Someone told you the book was good. 4. You read the back cover of
the book. 5. The teacher read it to the class or suggested it. 6.
It is by an author you have read before and liked. 7. It is another
book in a series you enjoyed. 8. You have read it before and want
to read it again. 9. It is a genre or subject you are interested
in. 10. The book has been made into a TV show or movie.
READ ON!
