DZ Trading donates $175,000 from clothing sale to charities January 27, 2005 PATRICK REVERE Staff writer DZ Trading finished a six-week fundraising effort for a variety of charities by hosting a luncheon for the recipients at the Haworth Inn & Conference Center Wednesday. Colleen Duffy, who organizes charitable efforts for the global garment business, said a holiday sale at its 276 W. 13th St. warehouse raised $175,000 for seven local causes and an orphanage in Shanghai, which is the company's primary distribution hub. Jack Hendricks, development director for Holland Rescue Mission, said DZ Trading approached him three years ago about their need for warm clothes, and that this was the first year the mission had received a cash donation as well. "I was told today that we would be getting a small check," Hendricks said. "We are very appreciative of their donations. Clothing is something we always need, and we think it may be even more valuable than cash. Hendricks said this year that DZ Trading, owned and operated by former Holland resident Ed Duffy, Colleen's Duffy's father, donated three truckloads of sweaters, jackets, pants and shirts. Whatever garments are not used by the mission, given to other charities or sold at the Lighthouse thrift store on Chicago Drive will be shipped to developing nations worldwide. Colleen Duffy said $48,000 will go toward putting a group of four Sudanese refugees through college in Grand Rapids and Holland. The Center for Women in Transition will receive $45,000, the Boys and Girls Club of Grand Haven will receive $35,000, the orphanage in China will receive $25,000, the Hope Summer Repertory will get $15,000, Hospice of Holland will receive $10,000, the Center for Independent Living will receive $2,000 and the Holland Rescue Mission, in addition to the 6,000 pieces of clothing, will receive $1,000. Trish Cranmer, outreach coordinator for Hospice of Holland, said $10,000 from DZ Trading will go toward the hospice's Tulip Tree Fund.
