What the artist is known for: For painting American scenes such as streets, buildings, restaurants, and landscapes. Hopper painted people in a isolated surroundings. Sometimes he would paint public areas where people would gather with no people at all. He achieved early success in the 1940’s but by the 50’s and 60’s he virtually forgotten. He has had a rebirth of interest in 90’s through the present.

canvasThis by far, Hoppers most

famous paintings. It shows a diner in Chicago with four people inside. The people seem to not talk to each other. It appears as it very late at night. There is a feeling of loneliness and isolation. The diner does not have a door visible and therefore the artist is implying that people who live in a big city are trapped. This was painted after Pearl Harbor and it shows the countries sadness in the U.S.

Description 2 The painting shows various people eating at a restaurant. Although people are sitting together, each person is in a world of themselves. The woman in green is gazing at you with a blank stare while her companion is looking down at the table. The painting embodies extreme light and shadow. The other couple are just as separated one in light and the other in shadow.
