A Year of Edward Hopper

2010-2011 was an unprecedented period for Edward Hopper House as we planned and presented a yearlong series of events to commemorate our 40th anniversary as a non-profit art center. The goal was to bring Edward home, and thanks to our many supporters, we did just that. With a year of exhibitions and programs honoring Edward Hopper and his legacy, we initiated what the local press dubbed “Hopper Mania.” The highlight of the year was the first ever exhibition to focus on Edward Hopper’s early years in Nyack. With loans from the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust, Edward Hopper, Prelude: The Nyack Years, ran from May 21 to July 17, 2011.

Peter Schjeldahl, art critic for The New Yorker, wrote about the exhibition in the “Talk of the Town” section in July, and Susan Hodara featured Prelude and surrounding events in The New York Times on June 13. These articles, and many others, brought widespread recognition to the Edward Hopper House and thousands of visitors to the area. Hopper fans could take a walking tour of “Edward Hopper’s Nyack” with the tour map we produced, and also experience Hopper-related exhibitions and programs at other nearby venues. Kristina Burns, an artist in residence in one of the upstairs studios/bedrooms, organized the Hopper Happens Festival, a series of readings, flash mobs, projections, and film screenings. The Village of Nyack lent its support by naming North Broadway after Edward Hopper and declaring Hopper’s birthday on July 22nd “Edward Hopper Day.” Thanks to so many collaborators, Nyack was abuzz with Hopper.

There are countless individuals and organizations to thank and we have acknowledged them elsewhere, but let me just say once again, congratulations and thank you to all who helped to make this “Year of Edward Hopper” a success.

Edward Hopper House is the birthplace of artist Edward Hopper (1882-1967) and it was his primary residence until 1910. The house fell into disrepair after Hopper’s death, but was saved and restored by members of the community. Since 1971, the Edward Hopper House has been a 501(c)(3) non-profit art center under the name Edward Hopper Landmark Preservation Foundation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mission Our mission is to preserve and maintain the birthplace and boyhood home of artist Edward Hopper (1882-1967); to maintain an archive of Edward Hopper documents and memorabilia; to serve as a resource for scholars, art historians, and art lovers worldwide; and to function as a multi-arts center for artists to display their work in all media, and to encourage and nurture community engagement with the arts.

Looking Back A lot has gone into preparing the house itself for such an exceptional series of events. In order to secure the loans of important Hopper works, it was necessary to make significant upgrades to the house. Lennox International donated a new climate control system; UTC Fire & Security donated a new security system; the interior and exterior of the house were painted; the bathroom was renovated; and many individuals and organizations generously contributed their time, expertise, and resources to make repairs and improvements to the house. Thank you to all involved. The Hopper Prelude exhibit itself was funded in large part by The New York State Council on the Arts through a generous grant--the most we have ever received from a single source. Still, there were many upfront costs for the exhibit, including catalogue printing, framing, shipping, insurance, loans fees, and 24-hour security guards. We secured a line of credit through Provident Bank to fund some of these upfront costs. The success and record-breaking attendance at the Prelude exhibition, however, significantly mitigated the impact of much of these expenses. Moreover, while the impetus for putting money into the building was the Hopper exhibition, now that the house has been ungraded we are in a position to host a much broader array of programs that will bring greater recognition and support to Edward Hopper House, as well as to Nyack and all who participate in our programs. Jazz Series Our much-loved Music in the Garden Series celebrated its 31st summer of jazz concerts in 2011 featuring renowned jazz musicians. Local business sponsored the concerts and loyal fans generously donated to the program to help defray costs. Raise the Roof! The community rallied in support of our efforts to raise funds to replace our 40 year old roof. We exceeded our $13,000 goal at our September 2011 Raise the Roof! Benefit reception honoring Gail Heller and Cris Spezial. Jazz great Steven Bernstein provided entertainment and the Irving and Sara Selis Foundation generously donated $10,000. The new roof was installed in December 2011with materials donated by GAF.

“In every artist’s development the germ of the later work is always found in the earlier . . . What he was once, he always is.”

~Edward Hopper

Year of Edward Hopper Exhibitions All exhibitions in 2011 were Hopper-related, starting with our Annual Members’ exhibit, then Hopperesque photography; Hopper Re-Imagined; Edward Hopper, Prelude: The Nyack Years; I’m After Me: A Light Installation by Christine Sciulli; At Home at Hopper(s) House: by Anna Lise Jensen and Jenny Carolin; Small Matters of Great Importance 2011: Interior/Exterior; Reasons to Paint: Nyack High School Students Look at Hopper; Focus on the Figure: Posed by Hopper; Charles Sternaimolo: A Photographic Journey through Hopper's World; Rockland's Hopper Inspiration: Photographs by Arthur Gunther; and our ongoing exhibit, Edward Hopper at Home: Selections from the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust. Such a range of styles, subjects, and media included in these exhibitions served to exemplify Edward Hopper’s far-reaching influence.

Workshops* & Lectures Our workshops and lectures also had a Hopper theme in 2011, with photography classes for adults and teens taught by Ken Karlewicz, and the Summer Interior writing workshop with Karen Finley, among others. In the fall we presented our first play series, as well as the Art Lives! theatre workshop for children. Outreach We presented our second annual Edward Hopper House Scholarships for Artistic Curiosity in 2011 to encourage a creative path for high school juniors. An award of $100 was given to students selected by teachers and guidance counselors at each of the 10 Rockland County public schools. The scholarships were underwritten by generous donors. We also organized our second annual Express Yourself! Mentored Painting program in collaboration with the YMCA summer youth program in which 10 students were matched with 10 teaching artists. Melanie Rodriguez organized the program with Rachael Solomon and we hope to expand the program so that it can run throughout the year. Internships We provided internships to 11 students over the past year. The interns gained valuable skills and learned all aspects of arts administration and exhibition planning.

Looking Forward This coming year we plan to strengthen our exhibition program and begin conceiving and organizing future Hopper and Hopper-related exhibitions. Ongoing loans from the Arthayer R. Sanborn Hopper Collection Trust will enable us to keep a focus on Hopper while we continue to showcase the talents of emerging and established contemporary artists. Other plans include our first playwriting competition and our Art Off the Canvas series of workshops. We look forward to collaboration and dialogue with our colleagues and supporters as we draw on the momentum and success of the Year of Edward Hopper.

“This will help make my dream come true...For my whole life I never thought I was good at anything…I was always upset that I wasn’t as talented as

[my brother] and my mother never believed in that either. I was still passing all my classes, but I never really had my time to shine…I am so thankful

and extremely glad for what you guys did for me. You changed my life forever.”
