DIET e-Newsletter, February 2019 Darshan Institute of Engineering & Technology 1 Educational Events Workshop on Product Development Cycle & Disruptive Start-up Formation A one day workshop on Product Development Cycle & Disruptive Start-up Formation was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering on 9 Feb., 2019. The aim behind the workshop was to provide an exposure to students about idea of disruptive start-up , various stages of product development cycle and how to implement the same. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Bhavin R. Dabhi from Universal Designovation Lab Rajkot. He is a design expert and international award winner, with 18+ years of experience towards machine design, new mechanism development, and product structural analysis. During the sessions expert covered number of case studies which helped students to understand the concept better. Expert Lecture on Nuclear Power Plant Department of Electrical Engineering organized an expert lecture on Nuclear Power Plant on 26 Feb., 2019. The lecture was delivered by Mr. N. P. Gandhi, Additional Chief Engineer at Mithivirdi Project of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPICL), Bhavnagar. He addressed students of Department of Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. With a brief introduction to history of Nuclear power in India and its development, the lecture covered many aspects regarding different sources of energy, sustainable source of energy, carbon foot print impact, safety, etc. He covered physics behind generation of nuclear energy and different types of nuclear reactors and its working. Working model of nuclear power plant was also put for demonstration. The major emphasis in the lecture was to highlight the fact that nuclear energy is clean and safe source of energy. Seminar on Study Abroad Department of Computer Engineering organized seminar on Study Abroad for students of BE Sem. 4 and 6 on 4 Feb., 2019. Mr. Vishal Patel, Business Data Analyst at Utah Health Information Network (UHIN), United States, was the invited expert. He very well explained about various aspects of studying abroad and opportunities for students to pursue further studies in foreign universities. He also mentioned about requirements and preparation plans for the same.

Industrial visit at Skill Development Centre and Jyoti CNC Automation Ltd.

Department of Mechanical Engineering organizedone day Orientation cum Industrial visit at SkillDevelopment Centre and Jyoti CNC Automation Ltd.for students of BE Sem 6. The visit was organized on2 Feb., 2019. Skill development center at GIDC(Lodhika) is established by its IndustrialAssociation which currently consist of 1100+industries related to Engineering, Plastic,Packaging, Food-Processing, Building Material,Pharmaceutical, Cold Storage etc. The primeobjective of the visit was to make students awarewith CNC turning and VMC machine along withhands on practice.

Industrial Visit at Adani Port, Mundra

Students of DE Sem. 6 of Department of DiplomaCivil Engineering currently study the subject ofRailway, Harbour & Tunnel Engineering. Inreference to this an industrial visits wasarranged at Adani Port, Mundra on 6 Feb., 2019.The visit helped students to know andunderstand various section of Port and itsfunctioning.

Students also visited foundry, sheet metal, painting and assembly departments of Joyti CNCAutomation Ltd. to understand procedure of CNC manufacturing.

Industrial visit at Redren Energy and Backbone Solar Power Plant

Participants of Suryamitra Skill Development Programrunning at Department of Electrical Engineering visitedat Redren Energy Pvt Ltd at Wankaner on 9 Feb., 2019and Backbone Solar Power Plant at Shivlakha, Kutch on19 Feb., 2019. Redren is the well-known solar moduleand solar water heater manufacturer. During the visitstudents were able to observe complete process ofassembly of solar PV modules and its testing. BackboneSolar Power Plant has total installed capacity at of 25MWp. During the visit students were able tounderstand design of plant, installation and working ofsolar panels, their wiring and interconnections, role ofinverter and its selection, operation from control room,supply of generated power to grid, etc.

Pooja on occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti

Vishwakarma Jayanti was celebrated at the Instituteon 16 Feb., 2019. Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrationof birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma who isknow to be the architect and deity of all engineers,artisans and architects. The day was celebrated witha Pooja held at Mechanical workshop. Thecelebration was participated by faculties andstudents of the Institute.

Clean Campus Program under Swashtha Bharat Abhiyan

Swashtha Bharat Abhiyan - Clean Campus Program was organized at the Institute on 12 Feb.,2019. There were 70+ students along with faculties who participated in the program andcontributed in cleaning of the campus. This event was aimed to bring awareness and convey themessage to society about importance of cleanliness and role of each individual in it.

The Sound of Music – A Musical Event

Music club organized a music event The Sound of Music on 9 Feb., 2019. Students of the Instituteactively participated in this event and exhibited their talents. The event involved singingperformance from students on karaoke sound track along with performance on musicalinstruments. The event was a lot of fun and audience also enjoyed being the part of the same.

A Tribute Ceremony for Martyrs in Pulwama Attack

A Tribute Ceremony for Martyrs in Pulwama Attack was held on 19 Feb., 2019 where in studentsand staff members of Degree and Diploma Institutes remained present. Students and staffshared their feeling at the occasion along with some befitting performances. Students, staff andInstitute combinedly contributed amount of Rs. 51000 towards Bharat Ke Veer Fund as ahumble gesture expressing homage and support to India’s Bravehearts.

Alumni CornerAlumni Meet 2019

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an Alumni Meet on 27 Feb., 2019. Thefunction received an overwhelming response with 150+ alumni becoming part of it. Alumniinteracted with their old friends, faculties and visited department to see recent developments.Alumni were also felicitated for their achievements, outstanding performance in professionalcareer and start-ups. Arrangements were made to make this day special and memorable througharrangements of various selfie points, photo shooting points for couples, live cricket matchstreaming, ras-garba etc. Current students at the Department also arranged for drama act andother games for entertainment of alumni.

Institute’s Scholarship to Meritorious Students

As a part of regular practice at the Institute scholarship is awarded to meritorious students ofDegree and Diploma Engineering on basis of their performance in university examination. Thepurpose of the scholarship is to appreciate and encourage achievers as well as to create anenvironment of positive competition among students. Top 5 rankers in each semester in eachbranch identified on basis of their SPI (and CPI in case if SPI is same) are awarded thescholarship as per details given below. The total scholarship that is awarded per semester tostudents of Degree and Diploma Institute is close to Rs. 25,00,000/-

Parents of topper students were also invited in thefunction. Chief guest and experts shared theirexperiences and motivated students.

Participation in ASME E-FEST ASIA PACIFIC

Sushil Varsani and Vyas Harnish, student ofDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, participatedin ASME E-Fest Asia Pacific held at Vellore Institute ofTechnology, Vellore, Tamilnadu during 1-3 Feb., 2019.This is an international event promoted by AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with an aimto share knowledge and inspire innovation. The eventwas honored by presence of experts from IITs, NITsand Industries. Students also participated in ThinkingWorkshop and won appreciation for their innovativeidea on Bio-Inspired Design.

Staff Achievement

Received Pedagogical Innovation Award 2019.

Prof. Bhavin D. Kanani was conferred with PedagogicalInnovation Award – 2019 by Innovation & Start-up Centre(GISC), at Gujarat Technological University. The ceremonywas on 14 Feb., 2019 at Paryavaran Mandir, Ahmedabad.The award was conferred in recognition for the continuingefforts towards GTU Innovation Council in various layersof Teaching-Learning methodology.

Participation in Gujarat Industrial Hackathon 2018 - 2019

Team students comprising of Sutariya Abhishek, Patel Path,Vachhani Parth, Padh Abhijeet, Bakraniya Vishal andChauhan Amit from Deparment of Electrical Engineeringparticipated in the Regional round of Gujarat IndustrialHackathon 2018 – 2019. The evet was held at AuroUniversity, Surat on 19-20 Feb., 2019. Around 78 teamswith total of 435 participants joined the event. The teamwas shorlisted on basis of the proposed solution for anindustrial problem posed by Surat based industry relatedto mitigation of harmonics by active harmonic filter.Students represented their project quite well and defendedall the questions posed by the jury. They also had goodlearning experience because of interaction with jury andother participants. The team is hopeful for getting selectedfor the final round.

Gujarat Industrial Hackathon is an initiative of Education Dept., Govt. of Gujarat, with the focusto solve challenges of MSME sectors.
