NIST Definition

CIO definition from NIST ResearchChief Information Officers (CIOs) are tasked by the FISMA to administer training and oversee personnel with

significant responsibilities for information security. CIOs should:• Establish overall strategy for the information security awareness and training program; • Ensure that the agency head, senior managers, system and information owners, and others understand the

concepts and strategy of the information security awareness and training program, and are informed of the progress of the program's implementation;

• Ensure that the agency's information security awareness and training program is funded; • Ensure the training of agency personnel with significant responsibilities for information security; • Ensure that all users of information systems are sufficiently trained in their security responsibilities and

other information security basics and literacy through awareness training; • Ensure that an effective information security awareness effort is developed and employed such that all

personnel are routinely or continuously exposed to awareness messages through posters, e-mail messages, logon banners, and other techniques; and

• Ensure that effective tracking and reporting mechanisms are in place

Certifications available to CIOs:• College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME)

– Offers a 3 ½ day Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) Certification Boot Camp and the Certified Healthcare CIO Exam

– One must apply for membership to take the exam– CHIME members must complete the following to take the CHCIO exam:

• Have a minimum of 3 Years* Professional Experience as a CIO or equivalent** 3 years �cumulative CIO experience in the past 6 years

• Submit completed application and submit $125 for application fee • Attest to uphold the CHCIO Professional Standards of Conduct

– The exam consist of the following:• The CHCIO Examination is based on 13 core tasks • 125 questions which include multiple choice, scenario-based, and independent questions• Administered on the computer• 2.5 hour Exam

– Once you’ve passed the exam, you must complete 25 qualifying Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within 12 months

* CHIME Affiliate Program participants and CHIME members who do not meet the three years professional experience as a CIO or equivalent will become CHCIO-Eligible. ** Equivalent experience: To be eligible for CHCIO status, candidates do not have to hold the job title of Chief Information Officer. If the position has roles and responsibilities that are equivalent in nature to that of a CIO, then he/she meets this requirement. Typically, CHIME members are the highest-ranking IT executives at their facility. In addition, CHIME members who qualified for membership as Corporate IT Executives also meet this requirement.

• Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)– Offer 2 Certifications

• Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) • Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS)

– Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems exam is designated for subject matter experts in health IT

– CPHIMS Exam – Members $300; Non Members $375– The CPHIMS exam has 115 multiple choice questions and takes 2.5 hours to complete – To apply for CPHIMS Exam a candidate must:

• Fulfill one of the following requirements for education and work experience– BA degree, or global equivalent, plus five (5) years of associated information and management systems

experience* or three (3) of those years associated in Info and Mgmt Sys in healthcare– Graduate degree, or global equivalent, plus three (3) years of associated information and management systems

experience* or two (2) of those years associated in Info and Mgmt Sys in healthcare

* Associated information and management systems experience includes functional areas: administration/management, clinical information systems, e-health, information systems, or management engineering
