    Education or Schooling

    It is commonly believed in United States that school is where people go to get

    an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupttheir

    education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education

    implied by this remark is important.

    Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than

    schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in

    the shower or in the ob, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor.Itincludes both

    the !ormal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe o!

    in!ormal learning. The agents o! education can range !rom a revered

    grandparent to the people debatingpolitics on the radio, !rom a child to a

    distinguished scientist. "hereas schooling has a certain predictability, education

    #uite o!ten produces surprises. $ chance conversation with a stranger may lead

    a person to discover how little is known o! other religions. %eople are engaged

    in education !rom in!ancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It

    is a li!elong process, a process that starts long be!ore the start o! school, and

    one that should be an integral part o! one&s entire li!e.

    Schooling, on the other hand, is a speci!ic, !ormali'ed process,

    whose general pattern varies little !rom one setting to the ne(t. Throughout

    a country, children arrive at school at appro(imately the same time,

    take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar te(tbooks, do homework,

    take e(ams, and so on. The slices o! reality that are to be learned, whether they

    are the alphabet or an understanding o! the working o! government, have

    usually been limited by the boundaries o! the subect being taught. )or e(ample,

    high school students know that there not likely to !ind out in their classes the

    truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest

    !ilmmakers are e(perimenting with. There are de!inite conditions surrounding

    the !ormali'ed process o! schooling.
