Academy Conversion

Academy Pre-Conversion SupportEES for Schools, in conjunction with Prospects Education, offer a one-stop-shop approach for schools thinking of, or about to go through, the process of converting to academy status. Whether it is about becoming an academy, joining an existing multi-academy trust (MAT), or creating a new MAT in conjunction with other schools in the area, we have a team of highly experienced, skilled and respected advisers that can guide you through the process. Our breadth of knowledge and experience means we can support, advise, guide and inform you every step of the way, from the initial senior leadership discussions about becoming an academy all the way through to actual implementation and opening the doors.

Key Features/Benefits• Providing professional and independent advice and support for schools right at the start

of the decision-making process.• Meeting with relevant stakeholders in individual schools or across a range of sites,

ensuring they have all the facts required and are confident to make their own judgement on the benefits of conversion.

• Engaging fully with schools in identifying the relevant academy model as well as highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of any existing model that may have been proposed.

• Working hand-in-hand with schools to develop strategic plans, and reviewing them on a regular basis, to identify milestones and check the progress made towards actual conversion.

• Identifying the training needs of senior leaders and governors. Developing and implementing a bespoke training programme that will ensure a successful and painless academy conversion.

Our journey towards Academy Trust conversion would not have been possible without the support, skills, experience and sensitivity of the Prospects Education team. Their extensive knowledge and expertise in school improvement has provided the Trust with a clear understanding of how we can build capacity in school leadership and teaching and learning. But most importantly, they have skilfully led all stakeholders through this complex process, and helped to create clarity in our judgements and confidence in our decision making.

China Education Links

China Educational Links and Mandarin Programme

The Essex-Jiangsu Centre for Chinese Studies are completely committed to supporting, advising and reassuring schools in their implementation of Mandarin. Their professionalism offers peace of mind when embarking on this linguistic and cultural journey.

They provide native Chinese teachers with well-prepared lessons that are lively and varied with games, songs and role play to engage with the pupils and all resources are provided. They have nurtured and encouraged me to improve my own Mandarin knowledge by retraining. They have supported me with the planning and implementation of Mandarin within the curriculum, and our scheme of work is tailored to the needs of our school from the range of topics to the pace of learning.

They organise a maths themed exchange where a group of Chinese students visit our school to experience school life and participate in the China -Essex Maths Competition which combines a mixture of Chinese and British mathematical skills. The organisation of this is superb and has proved to be very rewarding for all the pupils involved.

I have just returned from the China Bridge Trip through which our school has become partners with a primary school in Jiangsu. This creates exciting opportunities to share learning and to find out about everyday life for children in each country.

Marion Jones, MFL Subject Leader, Wentworth Primary School, Maldon

The China Educational Links team is dedicated to developing and expanding the teaching and learning of Mandarin and Chinese culture in Essex and nearby schools, deepening educational links and school partnerships between the UK and China.

The How2 pedagogical approach means the training is entirely applicable across the curriculum and is not dependant on subject specific training. The fact that all the resources are held on an interactive website means that all teachers in your school can access the training and approach and share good practice across the school.

English and Mathematics CompetitionsEvery year, EES for Schools run a maths and English competition for pupils in Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2). Enter your team for a chance to compete against other schools countywide.

Each competition starts in the autumn term with internal school challenges, followed by local heats in the spring term and culminating in the exciting grand final every year, in the summer term. We welcome entries from schools across the county for 2018/19.

The competitions have been running successfully for nine years and each year approximately 170 teams participate. In addition to the opportunity to network and build pupil confidence, each school has the added benefit of receiving copies of all materials used in the competition, including materials from the grand final, which are great classroom teaching resources.

Key Features/Benefits• The mathematics upper KS2 competition focuses on activities from all areas of the

mathematics curriculum. • The English upper KS2 competition focuses on activities based around reading

development, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.• Children will have the opportunity to develop and extend team-work skills.• Following registration, each school will receive a PowerPoint presentation which includes

a wide range of activities to help select which Year 5 and 6 pupils will make up the final team (four players).

• Teams will come face-to-face with teams from other local schools in a series of ‘knockout’ events involving a range of fun and engaging challenges. These heats will be arranged in localities across the county throughout the spring term.

• The competitions will conclude with an exciting grand final held at a central location in the summer term.

I am incredibly impressed at the talent and aptitude of all the pupils involved... Congratulations to all involved; I look forward to next year’s competition.

Leadership Support

If England is to compete with the very best, then strong leadership is absolutely critical … leaders are the key people in changing and improving the culture and performance of the organisation… It is leadership that drives improvement by creating the culture and ethos needed to push up standards.

Ofsted (2012). Sir Michael Wilshaw’s introduction. ‘The Annual Report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills’. [online] p. 9. Available at: www.gov.uk [Accessed 15 Dec. 2016]

Leaders in schools are judged by how well they communicate their vision and ambition for the school, how they set high expectations and aspiration, and the rigour and accuracy of self-evaluation to drive future planning to secure school improvement. Our bespoke Leadership Support provides schools with regular, ongoing support and challenge for senior leaders. Leadership Support is suitable for all schools, at whatever stage on their journey of school improvement. The support is based on the best of the former Schools Partnership Programme.

Key Features/BenefitsWe provide you with a highly experienced leadership adviser, who will work closely with you to provide bespoke support tailored to your needs, which may typically include:

• a school effectiveness and self-evaluation review• a specific review of agreed areas to evidence improvements and/or develop next steps• data analysis and establishing school priorities• verifying judgements• measuring impact and evaluating learning over time

2018/19

Moderation MOTGovernment policy requires schools to have a clear moderation process in place in advance of any statutory moderation. The role of statutory moderation is to validate these teacher judgements.

To support schools through this process, we are offering a pre-data submission MOT for a Key Stage 1 (reading, writing and mathematics) and Key Stage 2 (writing). All of our moderators are certified by the Standards & Testing Agency (STA).

Implications for schools:

• Evidence for each of the ‘pupil can’ statements must be seen. If there is no evidence for even one ‘I can’ statement, the child cannot achieve the standard.

• If there is insufficient evidence, the moderator may moderate more pupils from the cohort.

• Schools are expected to submit data which reflects any judgements changed during moderation.

• Evidence should clearly identify the amount of support a pupil has received. • If a moderator is unable to validate a judgment due to a systematic lack of evidence,

the local authority is expected to refer the school to the Standards and Testing Agency Maladministration team.

Please note: your school may still be subject to a statutory moderation if you choose to use this service.

20

Schools HealthcheckA healthcheck from one of our KS1 or KS2 accredited moderators will give schools the opportunity to check pupils are on track to achieve end of key stage outcomes.

Schools will receive external feedback on how standards compare to those in other schools, which will enable gaps to be identified and quickly addressed so that pupils are well placed to achieve age-related expectations at the end of key.

Key Features/Benefits• Supports schools to ensure judgements are accurate against their own assessment

criteria or alternatively, against criteria devised with the school.• Gives schools an opportunity to ensure that standards are maintained mid key stage.• Can take place at any time of the year to reflect schools’ data collection cycles.

2018/19

Why your school could benefit from a Pupil Premium Healthcheck: In the current and next financial years, schools will receive additional funding to spend on improving outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

With this funding comes an expectation from the DfE and Ofsted that schools will spend these funds effectively to ensure that attainment and achievement gaps are diminishing between eligible pupils and their peers in the school as well as all pupils nationally.

To support this aim, we offer the Pupil Premium Healthcheck to review the provision and outcomes for pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium.

The Pupil Premium Healthcheck can help the senior leadership teams and governors in infant, junior, primary and secondary schools as well as pupil referral units and special schools to improve their understanding of, and evidence their use of, the Pupil Premium. It is a bespoke programme, tailored to your needs and will be designed with you, based on an available menu of activities.

Key Features/Benefits• in-depth analysis of your current use of Pupil Premium funding• advice and guidance on how best to develop your use of the Pupil Premium• information you need to be Ofsted-ready regarding the Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium Strategy

[our adviser] considered evidence thoughtfully and listened carefully, which enabled him to gain a good understanding of the context of our small school and the complex needs of some of our pupils. Because he had this strong grasp of our context, he was able to celebrate examples of good practice as well as providing us with sound advice for developing our strategies further.

Headteacher, Colne Engaine CofE Primary School, Colchester

Diminishing the attainment gap between disadvantaged learners and their peers is essential to ensure an equality of opportunity for all.

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) was implemented to enable schools to put in place the essential support to remove barriers to learning for these children. It is crucial that schools, through their 360° needs analysis, identify these barriers and plan how to flexibly use the PPG to support learners to make better than expected progress.

To support schools to use their PPG effectively to enhance learning we have developed three options (Standard, Premier and Premier Plus) which will enable you to review your current practice, enhance it and meet all statutory requirements.

Key Features/BenefitsStandard

• a Pupil Premium Healthcheck

Premier• a half-day (mid-year) Pupil Premium Healthcheck • an analysis session • a session to support writing your Pupil Premium strategy plan • an additional consultant visit • an end of year evaluation session

A worthy assessment to have whilst making improvements or addressing areas of development.

Nera Butcher, Headteacher, Hogarth Primary, Brentwood

The Basic Skills Quality Mark is a nationally recognised award that celebrates and supports continuous improvement in literacy and numeracy. To gain recognition, schools and settings need to demonstrate a whole school approach to improving standards in literacy and numeracy with evidence of the impact of its approaches. The award recognises the provision, practice and performance within the development of basic skills. Once awarded, the quality mark is valid for three years.

The quality mark process is based upon good practice in school improvement. The principles of the quality mark are central to the school improvement agenda, the involvement of the whole school community, self-review and targeted intervention.

Lesson Study

Through the Lesson Study Project, our teachers have observed lessons and planned collaboratively. The focus was not on the teaching but on the pupils’ learning and the observation not a judgement of the teacher but an investigation into how pupils respond to the lesson. Teachers were able to support each other and facilitate successful learning through strategies that meet individual needs.

Headteacher, Chipping Ongar Primary School, Ongar

“Taking part in collaborative enquiries into improving teaching and learning is the single most impactful action a school leader can take to improve educational outcomes for pupils.”

Robinson et al 2009

Lesson Study provides the opportunity for groups of teachers to work collaboratively to develop and improve practice through planning, teaching, observing and reflecting on research lessons within a structured cycle. This ongoing blended approach to professional development is highly effective for all teachers in any stage of their career.

We offer three levels of service: Standard, Premier and Premier Plus.

A great course, beneficial for teaching assistants and, in turn, for the children.

This programme gives leaders and teaching assistants the opportunity to explore the variety of models available and decide which work best for them, giving each school a tailored experience.

During the course of the programme, teaching assistants will learn the principles of ongoing assessment and the importance of manageable, effective and useful feedback and marking. Mindset Approach

More than three decades of research shows that an overemphasis on intellect or talent and the implication that such traits are innate and fixed, leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unmotivated to learn.

Teaching people to have a growth Mindset, which encourages a focus on ‘process’ rather than on intelligence or talent, produces high achievers in school and in life.

Dweck, C. (2015) The Secret to Raising Smart Kids. [Blog] Scientific American. Available at: www.scientificamerican.com [Accessed 15 Dec. 2016]

EES for Schools has a unique method based on the research by Carol Dweck to deliver the Mindset Approach. We look at your whole school - from governors and senior leaders, to learners and site managers. This helps to create a complete cultural change throughout your school to develop a growth mindset.

Key Features/Benefits• create a school culture of growth mindset• improve learning behaviours• improve learning outcomes• support staff to embrace challenges• collate a bank of strategies and ideas to support others to develop a growth mindset• tweak existing practices to strengthen learners’ resilience and determination

Governor Services

Governance Support SubscriptionNational research indicates that a school is unlikely to succeed without an effective governing board. Strong governance is essential to ensuring successful educational outcomes since governors, although volunteers, play a vital strategic role in holding school leaders to account through support, challenge, and driving school improvement.

With an increasing national emphasis on skilled, knowledgeable governors and trustees who contribute to the effective governance and success of the school, it has never been more important to keep up-to-date with the latest legislation, guidance and good practice.

Our highly effective team of experienced and knowledgeable governance professionals enjoy a high reputation for excellence in supporting governors both within Essex and nationally.

We recognise that governors’ responsibilities are wide-ranging, with governing boards facing new challenges on a regular basis, and will help with any aspect of governance from the everyday to the extraordinary. We are willing to listen, in confidence if necessary, to support you in carrying out your role effectively.

Key Features/BenefitsAll customers are provided with:

• access to a dedicated working hours helpline (telephone and email)• a welcome pack for new governors• support for new chairs • regular communication to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes and good practice• support with governor recruitment, focused on the skills your board needs to drive school

Review of Governance

On behalf of myself and my fellow governors, thank you for a most interesting and useful bespoke development session. We were all very surprised at the way you managed to elicit answers from us that were on topic and even relevant! It seems that we know more than we thought, but perhaps lack the confidence. For the first time we think as a group that we can survive Ofsted and that is certainly due to you instilling hope into us

Jacqueline Stringer, Chair of Governors, Margaretting C of E Primary School

Effective governance and regular self-review is pivotal to school improvement and the continued success of the school. Since 2013, nearly 200 governing boards from both maintained and academy sectors have benefitted from an EES for Schools Review of Governance and they have become an established tool to support governing boards in their self-evaluation and as a health-check in preparation for inspection.

A review is not an additional inspection. Tailored to your needs, it provides the governing board with an experienced external perspective on what the governing board does well, what needs improving, and recommend specific actions for improvement.

Reviews of Governance are based on trust and mutual respect tailored to your individual needs, but typically the reviewer will:

Key Features/Benefits• draw up review trails using information from Ofsted and the school website• visit the school to meet the headteacher, chair and other governors, as well as

scrutinising evidence such as governing board minutes, visit reports and the School Improvement Plan

• provide verbal feedback at the end of the review, including suggested actions for improvement, to be shared with the chair and headteacher

• write a short written report with clear and specific recommendations for improvement

Once the review is concluded, the governing board will be able to implement identified actions for improvement with additional follow up from EES Governance Support as required.

Governance Support PlusTo support your annual self-review processes EES Governance Support can offer bespoke support addressing specific issues for your governing board.

This is particularly valuable for governing boards wanting to explore their skills base and effectiveness in a facilitated hands-on session, especially where schools are expecting Ofsted within the next two years or are in times of change such as federation, joining a MAT or changes in leadership.
