McMeans Junior High eighth-grader Charles Jang’s drawing titled “A Rare Connection” competed in the Grand Prix and placed first out of 100 districts and was auctioned off for $65,000. Fatemeh Ebrahimi’s sculpture called “e Spirit Within” gained notice from multiple bidders. e Taylor High School eleventh-grader’s artwork sold for $102,000. Katy ISD Student Art Auctions Off for Big Money

Students’ works competed in the art auction at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Katy ISD Celebrates School Volunteers

Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPs) attended a large celebration hosted by the Katy ISD Education Foundation. The VIPS put in over 1 million volunteer hours this school year.

New Katy ISD Board Members

The board unanimously elected new officers for the 2017-2018 school year. Ashley Vann was elected president, Courtney Doyle was elected vice president, and Charles Griffin was elected as secretary. These students were some of the first to attend and graduate from Rylander Elementary. They are now graduating from high school and celebrated together at the elementary school.

School NotebookMorton Ranch Bowler Wins at StateCrystal Cline won second place in the Texas State Girls’ Singles Bowling Tournament. This was her second trip to the finals. She qualified for the tournament after beating 65 other state finalists.

CRHS Students Win in UIL One Act Play CompetitionMultiple theatre students took home all-star awards. Ruaraidh MacLead for stage manager/dungeon master, Dylan Boyd received an honorable mention for his role as Chuck “DM” Biggs, Jonathan Buckingham for his role as Orcus/Ronnie, and Kaia Helmer for her role as Tilly Evans/Tillius the Paladin.

Studying in The BahamasTays Junior High eighth-grader Elizabeth Crumrin and Beck Junior High teacher Kristin Rush were selected for a trip to the Bahamas to study sea turtles as part of the JASON Learning Argonauts Program.

Seven Lakes Student Cast in International Thespian FestivalKendall Swendson was chosen from a field of more than 120 applicants to perform in the International Thespian Festival being held in Lincoln, Nebraska. Swendson will be a part of the crew for the production of We Tell the Story: A Celebration of the Works of Ahrens & Flaherty.

Taylor Family Fun Day and Chili CookoffThe Taylor High School Athletic Booster Club held the family event for the first time. There was kickball, food trucks, live music, a cool car show, and chili, of course. The varsity volleyball team took first place, the freshman volleyball team took second place, and the cheerleaders took third place in the cookoff.

More News Nuggets from Katy Schools Destination Imagination Teams Affiliate Katy ISD will be represented by five teams at the global tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee. Students from Griffin Elementary, Hayes Elementary, Beckendorff Junior High, and Katy High School are preparing to compete against teams from all over the country. In order to make it to the next round, these teams competed against more than 370 teams.

Katy ISD Schools Named to Honor Roll The Educational Results Partnership and the Institute for Productivity in Education named 19 campuses as Honor Roll schools. Elementary schools include: Alexander, Davidson, Griffin, Holland, Kilpatrick, Pattison, Randolph, Shafer, Stanley, Wilson, and WoodCreek. Junior Highs include: Beck, Beckendorff, Cinco Ranch, McMeans, Seven Lakes, and WoodCreek. High Schools include: Seven Lakes and Tompkins.

British International School Boys’ Varsity Wins ChampionshipThe varsity boys’ soccer team won the TAPPS Texas Division II State Soccer Championship title against the Dallas Covenant with a final score of 5 to 2. Over the last six years they have been district champions four times and state champions twice.

Katy ISD Named Best Community for Music EducationThe National Association of Music Merchants Foundation presented the award to the school district for the 14th year. Katy ISD is one of 4% of school districts across the nation to receive this award.

Taylor High School Quiz Bowl TeamThe team placed first in the annual NAQT Texas Invitational after 14 rounds of competition. Members William Golden and Richard and Jacob Redland won the Texas History Bowl State Championship.
