GET OFF TO A FLYING START THIS YEAR WITH

Robert Connolly’s Paper Planes is an imaginative film about a young Australian boy’s passion for flight and his challenge to compete in the World Paper Plane Championships in Japan.

It’s a powerful story of friendship, family dynamics and community spirit that follows 11 year old Dylan as he develops his skills as a paper pilot and navigates his way through the achievements and struggles of everyday life.

The film presents strong characters, some with flaws, but all to be celebrated as they offer an insight into grief, individualism, bullying, self-confidence and the wisdom of our elders. Set in iconic Australian locations, the film stars a globally renowned cast including Sam Worthington, Ed Oxenbould, and Deborah Mailman.

Following its successful theatrical release in January, the Paper Planes story is now available to audiences as a paperback novel. Written by Steve Worland, co-writer of the original screenplay, the

adaptation provides students with further opportunities to discuss the emotional and social issues explored within the film.

Collectively, both mediums pave the way for a ‘compare and contrast’ analysis, encouraging students to consider the demands relevant to each story’s audience.

To support schools using Paper Planes, the ACTF and Penguin Books have collaboratively created a free unit of work for teachers, exploring both the book and film. This resource is now available to download from The Learning Centre.

Class sets of Paper Planes are now available to purchase from the Education Catalogue. DVDs of the film and film/book packs will be available to schools late May 2015.

My Place for Teachers Aligned with the TV series, the My Place for Teachers website explores key significant events in Australian history that have impacted on the cultural, political and social development of Australia. Teachers can view or download clips and still images from the website with matching teaching strategies and student activity sheets, all explicitly aligned with the Australian Curriculum areas of History and English.

Year Level: Middle Primary (4-5), Middle Years (5-9)

Themes/Topics: Australians at war, relationships, beliefs, customs and traditions, currency, indigenous perspectives, celebrations, art, music and literature

Boy Soldiers Set in 1910, Boy Soldiers explores a time in Australia when all boys between 14 and 17 years of age had to register for compulsory military training. Will Barnes, a pacifist, refuses and is sentenced to three months training at Fort Queenscliff. There he meets opposition, but also wins admirers by sticking to his beliefs.

The Learning Centre offers free teaching and learning activities that support the Boy Soldiers telemovie which explores conscription and investigates how a filmmaker used a range of techniques to tell one boy’s story. The activities encourage students to analyse the techniques used, research and then debate conscription.

Scriptwriting shouldn’t be limited to the Drama classroom! The new Sketch-O-Matic interactive scriptwriting tool is designed to motivate and engage your students in the receptive and the productive modes of the Australian Curriculum: English.

Students love an opportunity to create work that represents them, their interests and their experiences and the Sketch-O-Matic supports students to do just that. The individual tool directs users through a five stage process to create their own sketch comedy, laughing all the way as they watch clips from the original TV series and behind the scenes raw footage of cast and crew offering their tips and tricks for success.

Sketch-O-Matic directly supports the Australian Curriculum: English. The free Teachers’ Guide in The Learning Centre outlines the learning objectives of each stage and makes explicit links to the Australian Curriculum: English.

The You’re Skitting Me Sketch-O-Matic package is now available to buy from the ACTF Shop.

Year Level: Middle Primary (4-5), Middle Years (5-9)

2015 BACK TO SCHOOL!

Why not get your school involved in this year’s Trop Jr Film Festival?

Many school students are already awesome filmmakers and as educators, we know that it’s a great way for kids to express their experiences, tell their own stories and demonstrate their learning. It’s also a fantastic way to develop students’ literacy skills, their understanding of aesthetics and encourage them to work collaboratively, celebrating one another’s talents and differences.

We’re encouraging students and class groups to make a film and enter the

world’s largest short film festival for children aged 15 years and under. Trop Jr is a great way to connect students with the filmmaking industry, give them access to a broad Australian audience, and also give students access to other student films that will inspire them, encourage them and educate them. Check out the Trop Jr Showcase on the ACTF website to view last year’s finalist films.

Entries for Trop Jr may be submitted individually or as a class or school group, but must be seven minutes or less and contain this year’s Trop Signature Item (TSI): BUTTON.
