Utah Master Naturalist Program$175 per personTo register, please visit utahmasternaturalist.orgInterested in becoming a Utah Master Naturalist? Each module of the program focuses on studying the different components of Utah’s natural systems including climate, geography, hydrology, plants and animals, as well as how these components interact and are managed. Each of the courses begin with a brief online course to cover the basics, and then a field portion where we go out into the field. Three credits at Utah State University, per module, are available for an additional fee. While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact Mark [email protected] if you have any concerns.

Deserts Module (Held at the Zoo and Moab, UT)Upland systems in Utah, such as the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert vary in plant and animal communities. However, these areas share common features: low precipitation, relatively high elevations, and climatic extremes including hot summers and cold winters. This module consists of an online portion, and 4 days of instruction in the field. Thursday and Friday (June 14-15) will be spent in Moab on an overnight trip.

June 12-15 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Mountains Module (Held at the Zoo)Some of the greatest ecological diversity and scenic beauty in Utah exists in the forest and alpine environments. Throughout these systems, temperature, elevation, and precipitation play an important role in defining plant and animal communities and their interactions. Come join us while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed. This module consists of an online portion, and 4 days of instruction in the field. Due to the nature of the Mountains class, we will be walking and hiking over uneven terrain at relatively high altitudes. Hikes are easy to moderate in nature.

Citizen Science

Utah’s Chapter FrogWatch USA TrainingFreeHave you ever wanted to help scientists collect data that will make a difference for local wetland communities? Are you interested in becoming a voice for conservation in your community? Do you enjoy visiting wetland areas and listening to frogs? Then FrogWatch USA, the citizen science conservation program, is for you!

FrogWatch USA is a frog and toad monitoring program where volunteers learn the calls of local species, identify them by song in the field, and record their findings. By collecting data, volunteers not only contribute to knowledge about wetlands and which frog species are found in their area, but they will also be able to educate members of their community about wetland conservation. To date, the data gathered by citizen scientists throughout the country has provided information about frog distribution, wetland health, and climate impacts on wildlife. You will help determine:• which species of frogs and toads are in an area,• if there are rare or invasive species in Utah,• where each species is found, and • when different species breed.

This one-day training will be held onThursday, March 87:00 to 9:00 PMSaturday, March 1710:00 AM to NoonTo RSVP for one of the dates, please call 801-584-1731.Have a group that wants to participate, but can’t make the dates above? Call to arrange a class.

Citizen Science SurveysDuring the summer months, join our citizen science biologist on surveys in Utah mountains to understand where remaining boreal toads are living. We offer single-day or multi-day no cost excursions where you will learn more about Utah’s wildlife and wild places while contributing scientific data to help guide conservation priorities. These experiences are well suited for the adult outdoor enthusiast whether you are a novice citizen scientist or someone with more experience!
