Our Fundraising The Education Foundation of the Summit has two major fundraising events each year with all profits going directly to the public school students and teachers in Summit County. Both events are enthusiastically supported by community donations and participation.

u Trivia Night, held each spring, provides sponsorship opportunities for local businesses as over 260 citizens and teachers gather for a fun evening of trivia questions and fun awards. Kaiser Permanente has presented Trivia Night since 2016.

u Golf FORE Education was held summer 2017. Golfers gathered at the Keystone Ranch golf course to support education. Sponsorship in 2017 was provided by FirstBank.

Our Impact Over $500,000 has been raised for public schools since 2010 through fundraising events, grant writing, and donations. In 2017, the foundation raised $94,554 through grants and fundraising and 90% of all the funds raised went directly to the schools to support teachers and students of the Summit School District:

Ø $54,930 for Eileen Finkel Innovative Teaching Awards to public school teachers Ø $7,750 for technology, STEAM, and reading programs in Summit School District Ø $7,500 for other grants to public schools in Summit County Ø $7,675 in senior scholarships for Summit High School and Snowy Peaks High School

We work on collaborative projects with other school support groups, such as the PTA/PTOs at each of the eight public schools. The Education Foundation of the Summit is a strong supporter of public education through these programs:

1. Supports innovation, creativity, excellence, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics)

a. The Eileen Finkel Innovative Teaching Awards annually provide funding to teachers in the Summit School District. $54,930 was awarded in 2017. Teachers submit project ideas and the foundation, in partnership with school PTAs and principals, select the projects to be funded. Teacher projects have included hands on algebra manipulates, academic competition materials, elementary classroom book sets, Author Visits, a partnership with FIRC to provide Pre-K Exploring

Foods experiences, adapted small space PE equipment, innovative learning at Snowy Peaks High School and enhanced technology such as scientific weather stations, fitness watches for PE, and digital cameras for advanced art students. Innovative awards also support new Career and Technology Education at Summit High

School, including welding and bike/ski technician classes. Funding has helped purchase welding tools and safety equipment that allow students to be creative and attain welding industry skills in a safe environment. Students are also learning basic bike mechanic skills and how to complete a high-quality ski/snowboard tune. A complete list of the teacher awardees is listed in this report.

b. Supporting reading and literacy is an Education Foundation priority. Innovative

Reading supports the Annual Author Visits for grades K-8 and Summit Books for Kids that increases access to books for children in grades 3-5 whose families do not have the support or means to purchase the books they need to become proficient and enthusiastic readers.

The Education Foundation of the Summit’s Annual Author Visit was a huge success. The children’s authors, Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, visited each of the six elementary schools in the Summit School District on three days, Feb. 7-9, 2017. In addition, the visit included opportunities for six essay winners from each school to meet with the author and two free evening presentations for families to learn about creating a love of reading at home. A favorite of local students and the best-selling authors of titles such as “My Big Dog” and “The Great Fuzz Frenzy,” the authors visit schools across the United States.

Sincere appreciation goes to the sponsors of the event: Summit School District, Education Foundation of the Summit, The Summit Foundation, and the Colorado Council International Reading Association. The annual event began two years ago when a literacy teacher, Hollyanna Bates, won an Eileen Finkel Innovative Teacher Award grant for an Author Visit. The Summit Books for Kids Program increases access to books for children whose families do not have the means to purchase books. The identified children are able to purchase two books each month with their teacher’s help. This program provides children with the books they need to become proficient and enthusiastic readers. It increases access to highly relevant, engaging books for children. Developing lifelong readers requires a systems approach to helping children acquire literate behaviors: reading for pleasure, reading a series, knowing favorite authors, and having books of their own at home. The number of books in a child’s home is highly correlated to their literacy success, both in the short term and the long term, as they develop into lifelong readers.

c. STEAM (science, technology, engineering,

art, and mathematics) experiences for students is a major focus for the foundation. EFS continues to partner with EVO3 Foundation in Frisco to provide coding classes for public school students in the Summit School District.

2. Supports and encourages college and postsecondary success with scholarships. EFS awarded $7,675, based on need and merit, in senior scholarships. Many recipients will be the first in their family to attend college.

3. Supports schools, parent and students through collaborative partnerships with community

and school-based organizations. The foundation also offers grant writing assistance and provides matching grants up to $500 to PTA/PTOs to support their school-based initiatives.

4. Supports community members who volunteer in schools. The foundation maintains close contact with retirees to inform them about opportunities to volunteer in Summit School District classrooms and to participate in the activities of the foundation, such as Trivia Night. Many also volunteered to help with reading projects at the schools and mentoring at Summit High School.
