dent, Ms. Soto is re-
sponsible for overseeing
the other officers in their
duties, presiding over all
meetings, setting meet-
ing agendas, appointing
standing committees,
serving on the
New Beginning
On September 23rd inthe fall semester, theEducation Club met forthe first time. With over
20 students in attend-ance the club was estab-lished to conduct the fol-lowing:
To promote and facil-itate change througheducation and tocontinuously supportthe idea of lifelonglearning.
To increase thequantity and qualityof learning experi-
ences for all clubmembers in the are-as of education, gov-ernance, communityservice, and profes-sional networking.
and, to allow club
members to lead,participate, and as-sist in organized,educational endeav-ors like awareness
campaigns, forums,conferences, sympo-siums, communityevents, etc.
After initial introduc-tions, members viewedinformational videos onRoberts Rules of Orderand the clubs first orderof business began.

Education Club Officers serve one year terms from September 1st to August 31st . To qualify for an officer
position, individuals must be enrolled students of South Texas College and be in good standing. Election of
officers is held in the last week of August and no later than the second week of September. All members will
be notified of club elections one week in advance of the election date.

Meet ECs 1st elected Officers...
During the fall semester, several
members volunteered at the an-
nual Roma Jamaica in Roma,
Texas. Serving as drink vendors,
members assisted other volun-
teers from Our Lady of RefugeChurch. Present at the event
were: Yazmin Soto, Amado Zam-
brano, Maritza Perez, Sandra
Gomez, Zaira Garcia, Odette
Garcia, Katherine Rendon, and
Rolando Ibanez.

Welcome back to the spring semester. I hope everyone had an opportunity torest and relax with family, and you are ready for some challenging coursework.
It has been a pleasure serving the students of South Texas College and mem-
bers of the Education Club in Starr County. I look forward to a prosperous new
year and working closely with you on upcoming events and volunteer opportu-
nities. I wish you the best of luck this semester!

On Wednesday, December 17,
2014, the South Texas College
Starr Countys Education Club
provided TMCs El Ebano HeadStart with reading books and read
to children to promote early litera-
cy. Members distributed gift
wrapped early childhood books to
over 40 students. After opening
their gifts, Education Club mem-
bers sat with children from TMC
El Ebano Head Start and read
their newly received books to
them. A special thanks to Mrs.
Arlinda Montiel, Center Supervi-
sor, and head start staff.

Club members participated in South TexasColleges annual Fall Festival at the Starr
County Campus on October 23rd. Fundraising
activities included the Moon Jump for young-
sters and the sale of manzanas preparadas.
The event was well attended, and the Educa-
tion Club recorded its first fundraising activity
for the 2014-2015 academic year. A thank you
to all club members who volunteered their time.

In the spirit of giving...
EC at Starr Fall Festival
Ms. Castillo has recently been
hired as a Youth Part-time In-
structor with the club and has
continued her studies in the edu-
cation field. A special thanks to
Michael Betancourt, Boys andGirls Club Director, Rigo Falcon,
and Alicia Carrera for reaching
out to the Education Club for the
opportunity to participate. We look
forward to future opportunities to
partner with the RGC Boys and
Girls Club this spring semester.
Congratulations to Education
Club members, Nukonna Castillo
and Leobardo Guerra, for having
been selected as volunteers with
the Rio Grande Citys Boys and
Girls Club in the fall semester.These students have been help-
ing to supervise and instruct chil-
dren at the youth center. We are
proud of these individuals for hav-
ing devoted their time and com-
mitment to making a difference in
the lives of RGC youth.
