Models of Integrating ICT into Education
Overview Looking at strategy behind
integration of ICT Models of integration : - Horizontal
- Vertical Current strategy Analysis Conclusions
Introduction 1998 - became a core subject 2002 - ICT strand has given the
subject status as one of the ‘big four’ Newness and importance of ICT has
made it a topic of much contention Debates over the aims of ICT and how
to achieve them
Horizontal Integration Or cross-curricula ICT used to support learning
throughout the curriculum Emphasis on ICT skills
Horizontal Integration
but… All teachers need to be capable with IT Sufficient hardware throughout schools Broad range of software Excellent co-ordination for assessment Will pupils leave with capability as well
as skills ?
Vertical Integration Or discrete Specialist domain of expert ICT teachers Emphasis on ICT capability Theory and language behind the
practice but…
Will pupils leave with a lack of skills/ context based knowledge?
Current Strategy: Overview Combination of models, with ICT
skills being built upon a foundation of ICT capability.
Current Strategy: Overview Stressing the need for:
“independent, discerning users of ICT” (2)
While trying to: “ensure that ICT skills are integrated with and taught alongside knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts” (1)
Current Strategy: Analysis Blending of strategies tackles skills/
capability issue, but leaves many of the original problems with the cross-curricula method unsolved
Every school is a unique case, so balancing the two opposites is down to individuals, rather than policy .
Conclusions: Development of sound theory of
the aims and means of ICT Increased funding for ICT
equipment – NOf, NGfL. More ICT capable staff coming
through New developments in technology
