Welcome to the 2020 Prospectus

Welcome to the 2020 learning offer.

I joined Macmillan and the newly formed Professional Development and Knowledge team in August 2019 and we have spent the last few months reviewing and developing the offer.

We are always looking to build on our learning offer to meet your requirements and to help you continue to grow. Please keep an eye out in your Mac Mail e-mail for updates on additional courses we may add throughout the year, especially as we introduce more digital learning later in 2020.

Introduction

Welcome to the 2020 prospectus of our programme of courses from March to July. Take a look through and you’ll find a varied selection of opportunities to help you develop your skills and expand your knowledge so you can continue to provide the best support and care to people living with cancer.

As a health or social care professional, you know that cancer can affect people in a number of different ways – from their health and their relationships, right through to their finances and their work. The needs of people living with cancer are ever changing and as a result, so are the demands placed on you. To help equip you to meet these needs and demands, we’ve designed a clear framework that divides our courses into seven specific themes:

• Personalised care and support for people living with cancer• Emotional health and wellbeing • Leadership and change• Palliative and end of life care• Communication skills

Each course specifies a skill level (all levels, foundation, intermediate or advanced) so you can quickly find the opportunities that are most suitable for you.

As well as face-to-face courses, we offer a variety of eLearning modules. Because these courses are online, you can complete them in your own time and in any location. Choosing the right level

Once you’ve taken a look through this prospectus and identified a course you’d like to attend, here are all the practical details you need to know.

Whatever the stage of your career, you’re guaranteed to find opportunities that suit you down to the ground. The levels of courses available are:

• Foundation – focusing on core knowledge and skills, and looking at how to apply some of the learning in your workplace.

• Intermediate – providing you with more detailed knowledge and skills, and exploring how to apply these within the remit of your role.

• Advanced – offering a higher-level provision of knowledge and skills, and focusing on how to apply them at a more advanced or strategic level.

How to book

To book a place, you can email us at [email protected] with the following information:

• Course title, date and location • The organisation you work for• E-mail address • Whether you are a Macmillan Professional• Telephone number • Any mobility, dietary or other supported needs• Job Title and band (if applicable)

Please note that some courses/workshops may only be available to Macmillan professionals in the first instance. If you are not a Macmillan Professional, you are still welcome to apply, and you will be added to a waiting list and we will be in touch if any places are available for you. Course places must be confirmed before attendance.

When you book a place, we request information from you that we use to contact you about the course you have booked on to. We may also get in contact with you after the course has been completed to get feedback, or to let you know of any more courses we think you would be interested in. Claiming travel expensesAs a Macmillan professional employed by your own organisation, we always ask that you speak to your employer about covering any travel and subsistence costs that you may incur when attending any of our education sessions.

If your employer cannot support you, Macmillan may be able to either fully or partly reimburse you. before applying for a place or booking any travel, please read the guidelines and our Expenses Policy below carefully:

Unfortunately, we are not able to support any travel and subsistance costs for staff not in a Macmillan role.

Once you have been in your Macmillan post for three months, and have attended your induction, you have the opportunity to apply for a Macmillan funded learning and development grant.

Each Macmillan professional can apply for up to £1,000 per calendar year for an individual piece of learning.

We know that funding for education is stretched at the moment, and this is a significant investment from us. We use money raised by our generous supporters to enable you to continue to grow personally and professionally.

There are strict criteria and we do ask you to follow the guidelines and the policy carefully to maximise your chances of being successful with your application. You will find all of the information you need here:

Communication Skills Courses

Communicating well is something we all have to do in many aspects of our working and personal lives to build rapport, understand concerns, and help decision making. Good communication can create harmony and improve relationships as well as make people feel good.

Being able to communicate effectively and confidently with people living with cancer, your colleagues, your Managers and those around you is something that might seem obvious, but if you’ve ever experienced a ‘tricky’ conversation you will know good communication is not always straightforward.

Positive and effective communication can require skill in terms of listening well, responding in a way that is helpful, using effective questions, and building rapport to enable meaningful conversations with others. Macmillan’s communication skills courses offer you the chance to learn more, whatever your role or experience.

Listening and RespondingFoundation Macmillan Professionals, Wider

Workforce and Volunteers

We all like to think of ourselves as good listeners, but do you want to do more to develop your listen-ing skills so that you can better support people living with cancer?

This one-day workshop will help you to identify the differences between listening and other helping strategies such as providing information and advice, as well as developing and practising your listening and responding skills in a supportive environment.

What will I get out of it?An opportunity to build on your existing skills and develop appropriate and constructive ways of listening and responding to people through active practice.

Intermediate Communication SkillsIntermediate Macmillan Professionals

Who is it for?This course is for Macmillan professionals (up to band 6 and equivalent) communicating with people in difficult, distressing or emotive situations, e.g. when handling distress or anger, supporting people after bad news or talking about end of life. The course maps to KSF levels 2/3 and is tailored to meet the needs of the group(s) taking part.

AimThis course takes an evidence-based approach and is designed to enhance your skills in communicating effectively with people living with and affected by cancer in a way that embodies compassion, dignity and respect. You’ll explore the principles of compassionate and effective communication by looking at skills and structure, as well as the importance of patient cues and concerns to delivering patient-centred care.You’ll learn how to confidently handle the situations you find most challenging and emotive, based on your own professional experiences, e.g. handling distress or anger, end of life conversations, complex information giving, difficult questions or difficult colleagues. You’ll identify your own learning needs and will get plenty of opportunities to practice the things you learn in a safe and supportive environment.

Managing Difficult ConversationsIntermediate Macmillan Professionals and Wider Workforce

Who is it for?This one-day workshop is aimed at all those wishing to refresh their listening and responding skills and consider in more detail how they can better support and respond to people who are distressed. It would ideally suit community as well as acute based staff supporting people with cancer, including volunteers and support group leads.

Learning outcomes:• To be clear about the process of communication• To provide space to reflect on and to discuss what is necessary for effective communication• To have an increased awareness of skills/ behaviours that may facilitate or block a conversation• To have an increased confidence in how to support and respond to people who are distressed• To reflect on challenging questions/statements and explore ways of responding to those• To discuss ‘boundaries’ and their role• To consider the importance of looking after yourself

Motivational InterviewingIntermediate Macmillan Professionals

OverviewThis workshop will explore how you can use the skills and strategies in Motivational Interviewing to support people affected by cancer to make positive changes in their lives. You’ll learn how to tap into andstrengthen people’s own desires and reasons for making change and strengthen their confidence in doing so, as well as developing good therapeutic relationships with people, which links directly to outcomes.

Learning Outcomes• Develop an understanding of what Motivational Interviewing is and how it fits in and differs from other therapeutic approaches• Recognise ambivalence and be able to work with motivation and readiness to change• Support people to increase their own confidence about changing behaviour• Recognise, elicit and strengthen ‘change talk’ with people affected by cancer• Manage and reduce the emergence of resistance and discord in conversations• Strengthen your therapeutic relationships• Work more collaboratively to develop a person centred care plan• Become more confident in using a defined set of skills and strategies designed to engage behaviour change• Discover a more effective way of holding conversations about change

Advanced Communication SkillsAdvanced Macmillan Professionals

Course objectivesThis 2-day workshop takes an evidence-based approach and is designed to enhance your skills in communicating effectively with people living with and affected by cancer in a way that embodies compassion, dignity and respect. Who’s it for?This course is for senior Macmillan professionals (bands 6/7 and above) who interact with people in highly challenging or complex situations, e.g. when handling strong emotions, giving significant information (bad news), introducing sensitive topics such as Do Not Resuscitate, or managing conflict or performance issues with colleagues. The course maps to KSF levels 3/4 and is tailored to meet the needs of the group(s) taking part.

Learning outcomes• Review the evidence base for effective communication • Identify a consultation structure for compassionate and effective communication• Recognise and practice key facilitative communication skills and behaviour in a safe environment• Explore the role and the importance of patient cues and concerns• Learn how to confidently handle difficult situations based on your own professional experiences, e.g. breaking bad news, end of life conversations, advance care planning handing distress or anger, challenging a colleague

We spend a lot of time at work, and the culture and environment can influence our health and wellbeing. This learning offer includes some face to face learning opportunities around Resilience and Wellbeing, and Developing Resilience to Burnout. We are also able to offer access to a specific online mindfulness programme which you can study over four weeks, with some practice activities in between each week which will help you to take some time out from your busy schedules.

Be MindfulFoundation eLearning Macmillan Professionals

Duration: 4 weeks

Focusing on core knowledge and skills, and looking at how to apply some of the learning in your workplace.

You’ll learn techniques and practices that you can use in daily life, including all the elements of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Emotional WellbeingFoundation

On this course you will learn about stress and the ability to develop resilience to burnout and compassion fatigue. The day will consist of a mix of presentations, facilitated discussions and sensitive experiential activities, working in pairs. The course will enable you to:

• Identify the unconscious processes that develop stress responses to life events • Identify the coping strategies that perpetuate stress responses• Explore a range of approaches for continuing to develop self-insight and to regulate emotional well being

Who is it for? People wishing to develop a deeper insight into emo-tional and psychological stress.

Developing Resilience to BurnoutIntermediate Macmillan Professionals

This course will give you the opportunity to practice a range of ‘compassion mind’ training techniques and skills.

You will measure your self-compassion levels and identify specific behavioural patterns that perpetuate stress and are resistant to self-compassion.

• Determine which ‘affect regulating systems’ you are activating during work-related experiences • Identify ‘threat mind’ thinking and practice mindfulness meditation to help switch to ‘compassionate mind’ thinking• Self-assess levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and compassion fatigue• Self-assess levels of self-compassion. Identify blocks to self-compassion

Who is it for? Any Macmillan Professional supporting people living with and beyond cancer, particularly non-clinical staff, or those relatively new to the field.

End of Life and Palliative Care Courses

There are few certainties in life, but there is one thing we can be sure of: none of us will live forever. So we all need and deserve high-quality end of life care. For Macmillan, truly personalised care at the end of life means being able to have a timely conversation with health and care professionals about a person’s preferences. Our foundation learning offer gives you the opportunity to build confidence in talking about death and dying, understand more about advanced care planning, and help you to identify ways in which you can support people affected by cancer when talking about end of life care.

Our learning offer has been designed for health care professionals who are not continually exposed to palliative and end of life care patients, and aims at building up your knowledge and skills about how to open up the conversation or acknowledge the cues from a patient to talk about death and dying.

Our modules include Introduction to Palliative and End of Life Care (let’s talk about death and dying), Listening and Responding, Pain and Symptom Management, and Loss, Grief and Bereavement.

Advance Care PlanningFoundation eLearning Macmillan Professionals and Wider Workforce

Duration: 7-8 hours

Explore when and how to start conversations, how you can help someone discuss what’s important to them, and help them plan ahead for their future care.

A range of topics which include reflective elements, video clips, tasks and useful web links to help with your learning. These are:

• The process and benefits and barriers of Advance Care Planning• Advance and Anticipatory Care planning in Scotland• Advance Care Planning Conversations• The Legal Framework of Advance Care Planning• Advance Care Planning Outcomes • Other Ways to Plan Ahead

Introduction to Palliative and End of Life CareFoundation

This one-day interactive session is designed to provide an overview of Palliative and End of Life Care. There will be the opportunity to explore more around Palliative and End of Life Care and how you can support people living with cancer to understand more about what palliative care is and how it can support them. The session will allow you to be able to have conversations and build your confidence in talking about death and dying. We will touch on some myth busting and the history of death and dying. The day will provide a forum for discussion and debate, with opportunities to learn, share and network with other professionals.

This day is at an introductory level and is for everyone involved with supporting people living with cancer who want to find out more about palliative and end of life care. The day is for those who want to build their confidence in talking about death and dying, and to help others to do the same.

You may be in a registered or un-registered clinical post, information and support role, or a managerial or project post. It is particularly aimed at those who want to build their knowledge and confidence in talking to patients about death and dying, for those who are maybe interested in pursuing their career in specialist palliative and end of life care roles, and for those who want to know more about the subject.

Aims:• Explore What is: Treatable but not Curable, Palliative and End of Life Care• Understand the History of Death and Dying, Terminology, and Myth Busting• Demonstrate how Personalised Care & Advance/ Anticipatory Care Planning fit together • Understand what is meant by the last days of life and how we know when somebody is dying • Think about your own wellbeing and identify ways to look after yourself

Loss, Grief and BereavementFoundation

AimsThis one-day workshop helps you gain a deeper understanding on the wide range of losses and grief experienced by people living with cancer. It helps you feel more confident in using your skills to deal appropriately with individual situations. It is important to understand that you will need to be prepared to explore and share your own experiences in this workshop.

Who is it for?Open to people who are interested in or are currently involved in supporting people living with cancer through loss and bereavement.

Pain and Symptom Management for End of Life and Palliative CareFoundation

This one-day interactive session is designed to provide an overview of Pain and Symptom Management. There will be the opportunity to explore more around the subject and talk about some of the myths surrounding pain management at the end of life. The session will allow you to be able to have conversations and build your confidence and knowledge in relation to pain and symptom management and how to support the families and carers of people towards the end of life. The day will provide a forum for discussion and debate, withopportunities to learn, share and network with other professionals. This day is at an introductory level and is for everyone, especially if you are involved with supporting people towards the end of life or work with people living with cancer who have concerns about pain and symptom management towards the end of life and what this means. The day is for those who want to build their confidence in talking about pain and symptom management and to help others to do the same. You may be in a registered or un-registered clinical post, information and support role or a managerial or project post.

It is particularly aimed at those who want to build their knowledge and confidence in talking to patients, families and carers. The day is for those who are maybe interested in pursuing their career in specialist palliative and end of life care roles and for those who want to know more about the subject.

Macmillan professionals possess valuable experience of managing ethical dilemmas in cancer care but without a clear conceptual framework it can be difficult to pin down the source of unease, settle on a plan of action, put ethical reasons into words, or identify the different ways people are thinking when teams have to tackle new problems together. Being able to refer to ethical principles and concepts supports individual reasoning, promotes good discussion between colleagues, and helps build confidence in ethical decision making.

This study day has been designed to help Macmillan professionals share a common language for talking about ethics in their work. Learning about ethicalprinciples is done while debating topical ethical issues from different angles.

Participants will work with colleagues to tackle a range of realistic case studies, consciously using ethical concepts and frameworks to explore all aspects of the problem and identify possible solutions. Macmillan Cancer Support is responding to workforce shortages in cancer care by re-establishing a role development programme to support staff with an interest in specialist cancer practice. The Macmillan Explore programme gives you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the cancer journey and provide you with a strong foundation in cancer care to benefit your practice and the wellbeing of your patients.

What?Macmillan Explore is a blended learning programme consisting of eLearning modules hosted on Macmillan’s LearnZone site, supported with telephone mentoring, opportunities to network with peers and a celebration event on successful completion. In addition, delegates receive a welcome pack, downloadable workbook and a certificate of achievement on completion. Macmillan Explore is accredited and attracts 26 CPD points.

Who?The target audience is Band 5/6 nurses wanting to develop further or looking for a specialty change and Allied Health Professionals across all disciplines. The programme will also accommodate newly appointed Band 7 nurses. We have had students from right across the UK.

This course is designed to give you the knowledge and practical understanding to collect the best possible outcome and impact data from those you work with. This course follows on from the foundation level course Introduction to Evaluation. You will learn about a range of ways to collect information, including: Questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, participatory and creative methods, and consider what tools would best meet the needs of both you and your stakeholders. You will also carry out simple analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and begin to evaluate the data you collect to be able to better demonstrate the difference your work makes. On completion of this course you will be offered up to 2 hours of one-to-one support to support you in applying your learning in your service.

Course objectivesAny Macmillan professional who has some knowledge and experience of monitoring and evaluating their work, wants to increase their

What will I learn?Macmillan’s work-based learning modules offer a fantastic opportunity for Macmillan professionals (and limited honorary places for non-Macmillan professionals) to undertake a fully funded academic module at Level 6 (Degree) or Level 7 (Masters) in collaboration with De Montfort University, Leicester, Buckinghamshire New University or University of West England, Bristol. Managing the Consequences of Cancer and its TreatmentsFoundation Macmillan Professionals and Wider Workforce

At least 25% of people with a cancer diagnosis in the UK are facing poor health or disability after treatment for cancer – and the percentage is much higher for certain cancers and treatments. Soon, almost half of the population will get cancer at some point in their lives, but the proportion of people who survive will also continue to rise meaning that a growing number of people will be living with the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment. Failure to manage consequences of treatment effectively can compromise survival and quality of life for people living with cancer.

This one-day study day will explore the consequences of cancer and its treatment, including both physical and psychological effects such as chronic fatigue, sexual difficulties, mental health problems, pain, urinary and gastrointestinal problems and lymphoedema.

Aims• Understand the range and scale of potential treatment effects• Understand the impact that treatment and its effects can have on a person’s life (both the physical and psychological consequences)• Know which resources are available to support people to self-manage and identify when referral on to more specialist services is requiredThis day is at an introductory level and is for everyone involved with providing information and support for people living with cancer in a clinical or non-clinical role. You may be in a registered or un-registered healthcare post or working in a cancer information and support role. It is particularly aimed at those who are new to supporting people living with cancer. You will find it helpful to have already attended ‘Introduction to Personalised Care and Support Planning,’ or be familiar with the principles of assessment such as HNA, before coming on this study day. You will also be expected to be familiar with the principles of cancer and its treatment (‘Cancer Awareness’).

“Chemotherapy can reduce the number of white blood cells (neutrophils) produced by the bone marrow. These white cells are essential for fighting infection. If the number of white cells in the blood is low, this is called neutropenia. Therefore, patients with neutropenia are much more liable to infection.

If an infection does develop, patients can become seriously ill much more quickly than normal. When this happens, it is called neutropenic sepsis.”

Principles of Self-ManagementFoundation Macmillan Professionals

The Recovery Package is designed to facilitate people living with cancer to, where possible, manage their own condition. This workshop will explore what is meant by ‘supported self-management’ and introduce ways to promote problem solving, self-discovery, goal setting, activity, use of resources and creating knowledge together about the best ways to self-manage.

This one and a half day workshop will be facilitated by Bridges Self-Management, a social enterprise that exists to make a difference to the lives of people who live with acute and long-term conditions, by working with teams from health, social care and the third sector, to define and deliver best practice in self-management support. Delegates are invited to attend a half day follow-up workshop to consolidate learning and consider the impact of this training.

The HOPE ProgrammeAn overview

The HOPE programme – Help to Overcome Problems Effectively – is a health and lifestyle coaching course to support people after cancer treatment. Originally developed by Coventry University, it is now a licensed and accredited self-management programme run in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. The programme uses cognitive behavioural techniques based on hope theory, self-efficacy theory and motivational in-terviewing. HOPE is for people who may feel abandoned after cancer treatment and who may be finding it difficult to cope with the long-term effects. It helps people self-manage problems such as feelings of anxiety, fatigue and concerns for the future. As such, the course is increasingly becoming part of the support offered to people who have completed their treatment. HOPE is a group programme delivered by health and social care professionals, together with trained volunteers with a personal experience of cancer. All facilitators are assessed and regularly monitored, ensuring positive outcomes for people attending the programme. The course takes place over six weeks in weekly 2½ hour sessions. Shorter courses are available in some areas.

How HOPE can help the people you support The HOPE self-management course is for all people who have had cancer, regardless of the type of cancer. It recognises the commonality of unmet psychological and emotional needs (fear of recurrence, reduced confidence), physical needs (fatigue and need for physical exercise), and social needs (such as social isolation).

People who have taken part in the course say it has helped them to: • feel reassured • recognise their potential to make changes to improve quality of life • deal with anger, depression, anxiety and frustration • use positive communication skills and reflective listening • set goals and take problem solving steps to achieve their goals • address difficult problems • use relaxation techniques • share the course experience with family and friends.

Target AudienceHealth and social care professionals, and volunteers who are engaged in working within organisations supporting people living with cancer.

AimTo become familiar with the HOPE course spirit, concepts, and underlying principles. This two-day programme prepares participants to facilitate the HOPE course to groups of people living with cancer.

Target AudienceHealth and social care professionals working within organisations which are already providing the HOPE programme or wish to become a HOPE centre provider.

AimThis one-day programme will enable participants to demonstrate awareness of the skills and knowledge required of a HOPE programme assessor. It will develop skills to assess and support facilitators to achieve the level of competence required.
