5 November 2012 No. 21 (Week 5 Term 4)

Educating Communities

I apologise from the outset that there is a lot of

‘educational jargon’ in this week’s newsletter, but it is

valuable information about what is happening in our

school.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED Within the next couple of days every student will

receive a note home to update family details on our

system.

This is VERY important as the future funding of East

Maitland will be based on this. Even if you have not

changed any information since you have enrolled it is

important that you return this form as all our records

have to be checked, as our student data administration

system has changed.

The importance of maintaining accurate and current

information, while always necessary, continues to

become increasingly important for school

management and operation. This includes many

categories of information related to staff, students and

parents that is located in various records, files and

databases held at the school and accessed at state

office level periodically.

The student information gathered at enrolment needs

to be updated at regular periods, as it is important for

meeting student health and welfare needs, student

learning and support requirements (particularly at key

transition periods) and in managing emergency

situations.

In particular, data on parental background including

occupation, school education and qualifications,

current address, language background and

Aboriginality, while perhaps not considered necessary

for day to day teaching and administration in a school,

are becoming more widely used to determine funding

for schools.

PLEASE NOTE: Individually identified data is not

transferred to any other agency or government

department, other than what was described on the

enrolment form.

McHappy Day

This Saturday morning (at 11am), I along with some

other members of staff will be briefly working behind

the counter at Greenhills McDonalds to assist with

raising money for the McHappy Day charities. Please

come along and say hello and support this worthy

cause.

DEC Re-structuring

Along with the massive changes taking place

regarding the Local Schools decision making and

accountability processes, the NSW Department of

Education and Communities has redesigned the

support model available to schools. We will work

within ‘Networks’ of about 40 schools, with a

Director and 5 Executive Directors overseeing this

across the state.

Directors will coach, mentor, advise and support

principals to position their leadership, the professional

practice in their schools and the learning and business

systems that operate on the school site that will deliver

greater local decision making and authority to the

local school level under Local Schools, Local

Decisions.

Student Safety

Please observe the drop-off zones for students in

William Street before 9am. There are ample

legal spaces available for a quick drop-off at the front

of the office. Drop-off in the bus zones is causing

confusion for bus drivers and other motorists and has

the potential for a serious accident. Please observe the

rules in the interests of our children's safety.

STATE DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The E.M.P.S. debating team travelled to beautiful

Stanwell Tops last week for the State Debating

Championships. The team, Lilly Taylor, Fay Highet, Zoe

Linnane and Toby Burgess were excellent ambassadors

for our school, displaying exemplary behaviour during the

three day camp. The group also displayed exceptional

team work and some sophisticated debating, as they

competed against the other regional winners from across

N.S.W. The team were also lucky enough to get the

opportunity to participate in some fun camp activities in

between debates!

What an amazing achievement to go to the State Debating

Finals- well done, team!

Thanks again to the school community for supporting the

debaters through the ‘Can-of- Drink’ day, to Mrs Cassidy

in the canteen for donating the cans on the day and to the

P&C for their financial support. Your help was much

appreciated and provided a very valuable learning

experience for our team.

All the best to Toby Burgess, who is also part of the

Hunter Central Coast Regional Debating Team and will

compete in the Primary Debating Championships at

Collaroy in December.

Please go over the following information if you have a child/ren who uses buses to get to and from school. It

comes from the Hunter Valley Buses website.

Code of Conduct for School Students on Buses

When completing an application for subsidised travel under the Scheme, parents and guardians acknowledge

that students have been made aware of the Code of Conduct.

The Code of Conduct was developed by Transport NSW in conjunction with the bus industry,

representatives of parent groups and education authorities. It aims to ensure both the safety of students and

the comfort of other passengers by outlining the behaviour required of students when travelling to and from

school.

The Code of Conduct is printed on the School Student Transport Scheme application forms. Parents/

guardians are asked to discuss these simple rules with their children so that they understand the standards of

behaviour required of students.

Depending on the seriousness of the misbehaviour, students may be penalised if they breach the Code of

Conduct. Students may have their bus pass temporarily or permanently suspended and may be required to

make alternative travel arrangements.

Code of Conduct

When travelling between home and school, students must adhere to various regulations regarding passenger

behaviour and the Code of Conduct for travel by bus.

To ensure their safety and the comfort of other passengers students will:

behave safely at all times

respect the needs and comfort of other passengers

behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no use of offensive language, fighting, spitting, placing feet on

seats or throwing things in or from the bus/train/ferry)

Give up seats to all adults and disabled passengers

protect all property and report any vandalism

show their travel pass or ticket when requested

only use the travel pass for its intended purpose

maintain possession of the travel pass at all times

follow instructions about safety

adhere to the law that bans smoking

not eat and drink in prohibited areas

keep arms, legs and other parts of their bodies inside the bus/train/ferry only attract the attention of the driver in case of emergency.
