• Formative assessments are snapshots, often informal, that inform further teaching of a skill or concept != Quarter grades!!• Summative assessments are a formal judgment of a student’s mastery of a skill or concept != Semester grades!

!

Two kinds of assessments!!

!MYP grading is holistic: we look at the whole of the criterion or ATL skill . . . Strands help us to moderate consistency, generate discussion about learning!

!CRITERION-RELATED ASSESSMENT !

• With each assessment, determine criteria levels!

• Teachers collect one judgment each criterion at least once each quarter - many of these are formative assessments!

• Determine TRENDS . . . do not measure what a student doesn’t know, measure what she DOES know!

• Measure knowledge, understanding, skill as outlined in criteria - not behavior!

• No percentages!!

Criterion and Strands "   B Organization

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

• create work that employs organizational structures and language-speci!c conventions throughout a variety of text types

• organize ideas and arguments in a sustained, coherent and logical manner

• employ appropriate critical apparatus.

Objectives The objectives of any MYP subject state the speci!c targets that are set for learning in the subject. They de!ne what the student will be able to do, or do better, as a result of studying the subject. The objectives of MYP language A deal with language and literature. The various language skills—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and presenting—are all covered by these objectives. These objectives relate directly to the assessment criteria found in the “Language A assessment criteria” section.
