Education in Haiti:Going to school means to surviveEvery day, 30 primary schools and 1 secondary school (the only free one in the country) ensure a warm meal to more than 10,000 children between 2 and 16 years of age in the poorest suburbs of Port au Prince and the provinces. This is often their only meal of the day and they are also provi-ded with vaccines and medical treatment, a clean uniform, books, pencils and exercise books and education to build their future by transmitting them values and positive expe-riences, confidence in them-selves and the world around them. Pasta and food are given to the children to help their siblings at home as well. There are over 300 teachers and almost 50% of them are

young people who grew up in Haiti’s NPH Orphanage, which

means that this way they could find a job that allows them to survive.

EducationALPROJECT BACKGROUND

The St. Augustin, Ste. Philomene and Notre Dame du Rosaires Street Schools are situated in the most remotes areas of the island. Overthere the infrastructures and the basics services are not provided by the haitian authorities; there is a lack of schools and clean water, the routes are isolated, the uneployment is the normal condition where the families live. There is no public transport to reach St. Augustin.

The economic activities of the area are minimal and they generate low revenues. The residents breed livestock and they practice a traditional agriculture. The commercial exchange is underdeveloped due to the transportation costs and the inaccessibility of the routes.

THE SAINT LUC STREET SCHOOLS

The “Street schools” are part of the “outreach” activities that Saint Luc carries out in the slums and the poorest provinces. The entire workforce and leadership in Saint Luc is Haitian. The street schools have been set up for children whose families are too poor to go to school, eat and be treated if they are ill. They have been described with the Creole word “encadrement”: a

loving embrace, a welcoming approach, protection from the risks of living in the street, guidance to build a future that these children would not otherwise have. The results of this programme already show that 70% of children who go to school do not contract HIV and are kept away from crime.
