Abstract

A dumpling maker is going to be produced so restaurants can keep

up with customer demand. When dumplings are made by hand, it is

extremely time consuming, and the dumplings lack consistency in their

folding, amount of filling, and size. The dumpling maker produced makes it

less time consuming to produce a dumpling, and the dumplings produced

are uniform. Team five was successfully able to produce a functioning

dumpling maker to meet the design specifications.

Introduction

A dumpling maker will be produced within a two week period while

utilizing the design process. The project was designed to be dishwasher

safe and easy to clean, while also being compact to allow for easy storage.

The dumpling maker must produce at least ten dumplings a minute. The

product must also be safe and easy to use by the consumer. Through the

brainstorming process, many potential ideas were created that were put in

two design matrices to create the best design.

Description of the Design Task

Problem Statement

One of the most popular foods in the eastern part of Asia is the

dumpling. Because if its popularity, restaurants have a hard time keeping

up with the demand for this product. It is an extremely time consuming and

difficult to produce dumplings, and restaurants fall behind and have a hard

time meeting the customers’ requests for the product.

Mission Statement

In order to help restaurants keep up with customer demand, a

dumpling maker will be produced. The dumpling maker will produce

dumplings faster and more efficient than making them by hand. It will

improve the consistency of the dumplings produced. The machine will to

mix the dough, cut the dough, add the filling, and fold each dumpling in a

uniform way.

The dumpling maker will be able to be operated in an automatic, or a

The dumpling maker must produce an average of at least ten

dumplings a minute

Unless justified by the designers, the cost of materials for the

dumpling maker must not exceed $200

The dumpling makers must be safe to use, safe to properly handle

food, easy to maintain, fold the dumplings properly, and dishwasher

safe

Customer Needs Assessment

The customer survey showed that the stores wanted a small

household size mixer that would take up a small amount of room in their

store. The stores were willing to spend $150 dollars on the product. The

survey also revealed that no store was already using a dumpling maker

resulting in all the stores making them by hand.

Concept Generation

Seven different concepts were sketched and used in the design

matrices. The group brainstormed the cart ideas together and used two

matrices to narrow down to possible options to the final design.

Operation Instructions

The dumpling maker works with four steps that are all automated to

help the customer. The dough ingredients are placed into the mixer where

the dough will be mixed. The dough is then pushed through the automated

rollers to make the dough thin and even to produce dumpling sheets. The

dough then runs along the conveyor belt where the dough is cut and filled

with the desired filling. Then the dough is pulled into the automated folder,

folding the circles into a uniform dumpling shape. The operator only needs

to turn on the machine and move the dough from the mixer to the rollers,

and the rest of the machine is fully automated.

Engineering Analysis

Working Mechanism

The mixer is electrically powered to fully mix the dough automatically.

The dough is then run through the rollers to give it a thin and even shape.

The rollers are powered by the motor to allow for easy thinning of the

dough. The dough sheet then falls onto a conveyor belt that moves it down

to the cutter-filler combination. The conveyor belt is a rubber sheet

stretched over rollers to move at a constant speed. The cutter is powered

electrically and the time taken to go up and down is precise to allow for a

cut at specific intervals to create a circle of dough. While being cut the filler

open the slide mechanism causing the filling to fall down the tube into the

center of the circle. Combining the cutter with the filler allows for the filling

to be perfectly centered in the dough. The cutter is powered by a

mechanical arm that moves up and down. The dough circles then move to

the folder where they are automatically folded. All automatic elements are

powered by the motor.

Summary & Conclusion

The goal of the design was to fulfill the required specifications as well

as the customer’s needs. The customer’s important aspects were the

product being household sized, being automatic, and a cheap cost. The

dumpling maker would cost one hundred and eighty dollars to produce but

when purchasing in wholesale the materials would be much cheaper to get.

This would allow the final product to be one hundred and fifty dollars for the

consumer to purchase. The design is almost completely automatic allowing

for quick production of dumplings with a few manual components to allow

for easy use. The product is able to produce over ten dumplings per minute

due to the large amount of dough that can be processed.

Operation Instructions

The dumpling maker works with four steps that are all automated to

the mixer to the rollers, everything else is fully automated.
