January 9 - 15, 2015

Dear Working Wise:My boss is always on my case about everything. He never has anything good to say, he’s always complaining. Is he allowed to do that? It almost seems like harassment. What can I do? Signed, Worn-out worker

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Dear Worn-out:

It is hard to tell from your letter if your supervisor is like this with everyone or just you.

If he is like this with everyone, you might want to gather your co-workers together to discuss his management and communication styles with him.

If it seems like he is only picking on you, you might need to meet with him to discuss your performance and how he communicates with you. Try asking him to narrow down his top three concerns, agree to work on them, and meet often to discuss the progress that both of you have made.

Getting specic and meeting frequently will allow both of you to see that you are both committed to improving your working relationship.

You might also want to give some thought to your attitude at work. A positive attitude is one of the most important things that you can bring to work with you every day.

This is traditionally the time of year when we examine our lives and make resolutions to improve them.

You might want to make one of your resolutions to have the best attitude in the oce this year. It’s hard to be angry with someone who is dependable, always smiling and eager to help.

Start the New Year with a new attitude by being: o Honest;o Organized;o Eager to learn; o Without self-pity;o A courteous driver;o Committed to quality; o Excited about your work;o Interested in other people;o Dependable and responsible;o Respectful of other’s opinions;o On time for work and meetings;o Trustworthy – keep your promises;o Optimistic even when others are not; o Responsible – own up to your mistakes;o Positive when things don’t go your way;o Agreeable while disagreeing with others;o Flexible to new or unexpected situations;o Easy going and in control of your temper;o Dressed appropriately for your workplace;o Positive about other people – see their strengths;o Courteous and polite even when you are unhappy;o Accepting of constructive criticism without resentment;o Self-aware – recognize your weaknesses and work on them;o Concerned with what your boss needs and how you can help;o Enthusiastic – welcome new projects and opportunities to learn;o Attentive – follow directions and ask questions if you are not sure about something.

Try asking your supervisor what pressures he is under? Knowing where your supervisor is coming from and what his priorities are will help you better understand his demands and how you can help.
