Summer Term

Edmonton County School Educating our Community for Success

Friday 24th May 2019

Dear Parents and Carers

I write to you at the end of a relatively short but very intense half-term. Year 11 and Year 13 students have been

working hard to prepare for their GCSE and A level examinations. We hold a weekly Study Zone on Saturdays at school

and it has been great to see so many students coming to work with teachers on specific subjects or just to spend a

couple of quiet hours in the Library. All Year 11 and Year 13 students are welcome to school from 10am-12noon each

Saturday during the exam period.

As you know we are celebrating our Centenary Year and we held a competition to design a Centenary Mug. First prize

was won by Romina Brown and her design has been used to create our Centenary Mug.

The cost of a mug is £5.

If you would like to purchase one of these mugs, please contact Mrs Frisby on [email protected]. I

hope that you agree that it looks really good and a fitting design to recognise our school’s history.

Tomorrow we bid farewell to Mr Grey who has been teaching History to Years 11 and 13 since January of this year. We

were facing staff shortages and Mr Grey came out of his retirement to come and provide much needed teaching to

GCSE and A level classes. Thank you Mr Grey for your help and dedication to this important task.

Term resumes for students on Monday 3 June 2019.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN THE SCIENCE FACULTY

Year 10 Success! Biology Challenge 2019 The Biology Challenge stimulates students’ curiosity for the natural world and encourages them to take

an interest in biology outside of school. 31 of our highest achieving, gifted and talented Year 10 students across Bury and Cambridge were selected to take part in this Biology Challenge. The

competition which consisted of two, twenty-five-minute multiple choice papers taken online under staff

supervised exam conditions. Questions were set on the school curriculum, as well as the knowledge they would have gained by reading books and magazines, watching Natural History programmes and taking

notice of advances in Biology in the media.

All our students took the challenge very seriously and the following students performed exceptionally

well – their certificates are on the way and will be awarded in school:

Brilliant Club Success!

Congratulations to the students who completed the Brilliant Club Programme!

Students successes were outstanding with special commendations to

Ellen Joannou and Helin Kaya who both achieved a 1st.

Throughout the last school year twenty two students in Year 10

completed The Brilliant Club, an award winning charity that exists to

widen access to highly-selective universities for pupils from under-

represented groups.

To celebrate their hard work and achievement, the students were

invited to take part in a Graduation Ceremony.

The Brilliant Club Graduation took place at the prestigious London

School of Economics on 15th May 2019. Parents and students were

escorted by Mrs Uddin and Miss McKenzie-Ward and travelled by

coach from the Cambridge campus.

The event was well attended both by students and their parents. All

twenty two students graduated with excellent passes - two students

achieving a 1st class degree!

The students were taken on a tour of the college with a current

student and took part in workshops offering guidance on university

life, courses and applications as well as study skills.

Parents were extremely proud to see their children receive their

graduation certificates, and thanked Edmonton County School for

being able to witness the graduation, and for the fantastic opportunity

for the students by the school and the Brilliant Club.

The evening started with welcome drinks for all, followed by a

welcome presentation for parents and students. Students were then

whisked away by current LSE students to have group sessions. Parents

were then given a presentation in the lecture theatre on “facts and

myths” about University life and studies in general. Parents found this

very informative, with many parents taking photos of facts/links from

the PowerPoint presentation.

Please see next page for Moderated Marks Reports.

I would also like to thank Mrs Uddin for organising the Brilliant Club

administrating activities and Miss McKenzie-Ward for taking lovely

photos of the ceremony.

The Ben Kinsella

Knife Crime Awareness Exhibition and Workshop

Last year and most recently this year there has been a significant surge in Knife crime especially within the local area.

London’s knife epidemic is showing no signs of ending, with the capital reeling from fatal attacks since the start of 2019.

As the number of homicides reached 135, the plague of knife crime is not nearing its end. Ben Kinsella was just 16 years

old when he was stabbed to death, in a horrific act of senseless violence on the 29th June, 2008 in Islington, London

Ben went to Holloway school and was a normal teenager who loved art, music football and girls. Having finished his

GCSE’s he went out to a local bar to celebrate with friends. During the evening there an altercation in the bar between

friends of Ben and 3 other teenagers, Ben was not involved in the incident in anyway. On his way home Ben and his

friends realised that they were being followed. They split up, and whilst his friends decided to run, Ben calmly carried

on his way home. Ben was the first person the three teenagers found and in an unprovoked attack, Ben was stabbed to

death.

On 21st May Mr Ozzie and Mrs Uddin took some Year 9 students to visit The Ben Kinsella Trust Workshop, at Finsbury

Library in Islington. This is a programme that educates young people using a variety of learning approaches about the

dangers of carrying a knife and how to make positive choices to stay safe and to learn more about the impact of knife

crime, choice and consequences, how to make safe decisions and good friends, the realities of prison life and the law

and how it is applied to knife crime cases.

Year 9 students also had the opportunity to view the penultimate room, where they enter a replica prison cell where an

actor drives home the message of the reality of living in a prison cell. Our Year 9 students were very engaged and they

got to ask the ‘prisoner’ about prison and this helped debunk some of myths that they may hold about the prison

regime. It also allowed students to experience what it would be like to be stuck in a confined space. They are then able

to reflect on the 10-minute experience and compare what that might be like if they had to live this for 23 hours a day 7

days a week.

PRE-WORN SCHOOL UNIFORM APPEAL

Do you have ECS school uniform that your son/daughter has outgrown which is in good condition?

At the end of the school year many children have outgrown their uniforms so this is a great opportunity to put them to good use. School uniforms aren’t usually donated to charity shops, they tend to be thrown away if they are no longer needed.

With many families experiencing financial hardship we would be grateful to take items that could be prohibitively expensive when bought new and pass them on to our students.

We will accept donations at any time

Please ensure items are checked for quality

It would be appreciated if donations are clean and all name labels removed

Please put donations into a carrier bag, mark as a donation and drop off at Reception on either Campus

OFFICE NEWS

Hayfever

At this time of the year it can be very distressing if your child

suffers from hay fever. Please remind your child to take their

medication to avoid unnecessary suffering. It should be

sufficient for them to take their antihistamine medication at

night or before they come to school which would help reduce

disruptions to lessons. A consent form can be obtained from the

welfare office for eye drops and/or nasal sprays to be kept in the welfare office which be taken during the school day.

Parentpay

Please ensure there are always sufficient funds on your child’s account to enable them to continue using the canteen

facilities. It is important to note if your child is eligible to free school meals, there is a daily amount available to

them. In addition they will only be able to use their entitlement once during the day and there may be restrictions in

their selection. For example a meal may include a small bottle of water, however there will be a charge for a large

bottle of water. As a suggestion, you could provide your child with a small bottle of water which may allow them more

variety.

Please do not hesitate to contact either school office if you have any concerns.
