Mission

Goals

Current Branding The Art Institutes’ branding is utilized within their section of the building. Different brand elements such as brandmarks and colors can be seen throughout the school. The Art Institute of Tampa has four different brandmarks that they have incorporated in their signage. Two of them are visually similar, the position of the logotype and mark differ. The third sign is the brandmark “Ai,”and no wordmark. The fourth is a sub brand “The International Culinary Schools” and their shield.

The majority of the brandmarks contain a service mark but this is not consistent with all signage. The Art Institutes’ brand colors are red, black, and white. In all three of the brandmarks the “Ai” is typically seen in red, while the wordmark and tag line are featured in black or white. Full silver brandmarks have been occasionally used. The brandmarks and colors are correlated into the school’s environment. Brandmarks are located on hallway windows next to the classrooms. The brand colors are integrated on the doors and columns of the building.

The Art Institute of Tampa is a multi-campus, career oriented institution that provides students with academic preparation and practical skills through programs in the applied arts and design industries. The institution prepares its undergraduate students for entry-level positions and its graduate students for advancement in their chosen fields. Miami International University of Art & Design and its branch campuses, The Art Institute of Jacksonville and The Art Institute of Tampa are dedicated to fostering a culture that encourages creativity, research, and learning-centered endeavors.

To provide students at all degree levels with the theory, knowledge, and skills appropriate to their disciplines, including an undergraduate grounding in foundational studies and general education.

To help students identify their career goals and develop the professional skills to achieve them.

To utilize a continuous quality improvement process to enhance student learning and university success.

To recruit and retain qualified faculty with the appropriate academic credentials and professional experience to promote a learning centered environment.

To provide administrative and educational support services to foster a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment for a diverse institutional population.

As of 2004, Education Management Corporation (EDMC) has two of their schools, The Art Institute of Tampa and South University, utilizing the same building, facilities, parking lot at 4401 N. Himes Ave, Tampa Florida 33614. There are two floors with 102,965 square feet of classrooms and offices that they share. There are no doors or walls that separate the two schools. Both schools share a student lounge, library, atrium, student store, and restrooms. Signage is the only way of differentiating the classrooms and offices. The building is located in “Parkside” a division of Tampa Bay Park owned by Highwoods Properties. Since the property is not owned by EDMC all major signage near the road ways are owned by Highwoods Properties. Exterior signage for the schools are located only within the parking lot of the building. Navigational signage throughout Tampa Bay Park only consist of the seven property division names, not by the company name.

Design Approach




Prior to the proposal an audit was conducted to find areas in need of improvement. These findings have showed us that the major problems are excessive amounts of sign types, inconsistencies in placement of signage, and lack of wayfinding signage. Our audit also explained the current situation of the school; The Art Institute of Tampa shares the building with South University and the environment does not differentiate the two due to the lack of branding.

In order to address these problems the following proposal has been prepared. This proposal will adhere to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines.

A new environmental design based signage system needs to be implemented. The goals of this system are to reduce excessive amounts of signs and create consistency throughout the entire school property, introduce an improved wayfinding system that will allow visitors, guests and students to locate the campus, parking, entrances, specific offices and other facilities easily, and develop a high-tech campus environment based on the brand, mission, and goals of The Art institute of Tampa, making this a place for creative education.

A new signage system has been developed to address the situation. The goals of this system are to reduce excessive amounts of signs and create consistency throughout the entire school. An improved wayfinding

system will allow visitors, guests, and students to locate offices and other facilities easily. Visitors should be comfortable with the path they are taking. All messaging will be simple, direct, and easily found. A directory will be placed in the front lobby so guests can easily distinguish what floor of the building thy need to be on. The new wayfinding system will allow people driving on the road to know where The Art Institute of Tampa is located. This will allow guests to see the sign early enough so they will not miss their turn in to the school. Free standing signs to help guests navigate to the parking lot .

A high-tech environment has been developed to implement the brand, mission, and goals of the Art Institute of Tampa. Students and visitors should be able to visually see this brand. The Art Institute of Tampa uses leading technology and is educating the designers of the future, this should be reflected throughout their campus. This will be seen through the use of geometric shapes, particularly triangles and rectangles. The use of materials, such as stainless steel, wood, and dark carpeting. A defined color palette, with primary colors a white and a cool gray will help dress this high-tech environment. Typography consisting of the Helvetica type family will be utilized to express the design approach and achieve durability.

Proposal Shapes




Typography is important to the sign program’s graphic system. It is crucial that the typeface is legible and maintains longevity. Helvetica is suggested by the ADA and will be utilized in the proposed wayfinding system. Helvetica is a clear and legible font family that includes: regular, bold, oblique, and bold oblique. When the size and letter spacing are at appropriate settings, messages in Helvetica are legible.

Title case treatment will be used on all sign messages. Lower case letters have more distinctive shapes than capital letters. They also have a better word formation making it easier to distinguish compared to an all capitalized word.

The primary colors, white and gray, will create the high-tech environment that is desired.

The brand colors, red and black, will be implemented in the environment’s secondary colors. They will not be implemented as primary colors because they may overpower the environment and can make the ambiance feel uncomfortable.

White gives a clean appearance and is often used in high-tech environments. White next to red and black creates a strong contrast that will allow a visually appealing environment .

Gray is a neutral color that will give balance amongst the bolder colors in the environment. This color will bring a calming and cooling effect to relax students and faculty.

Red, the primary brand color of the school, will bring warmth amongst the cooler colors. Having a touch of red in the environment will cause stimulation and will make people feel the need to take action. Black, one of the school’s brand colors, will make surrounding colors become brighter. This color will make the environment feel sophisticated.

Black can be warm or cool so it will compliment all of the environmental color choices.

Bamboo Flooring- Natural Finish




Stainless steel with a 1D finish, has a very low reflectivity. It does not require a lot of maintenance, even if it is located outside, it will not corrode or rust. It is completely recyclable and has a life expectancy over 100 years.

Perforated stainless steel has the same benefits as stainless steel. The perforations are typically used for liquid draining or ventilation purposes, but in this case it is strictly to help design the high-tech environment.

Commercial grade erber carpeting is extremely durable and can last a minimum of 10 years. It is built for heavy foot traffic and easily hides stains due to its dark color and looped carpet fibers.

Bamboo flooring with a natural finish is environmentally friendly and extremely durable and resilient. It will last a minimum of 30 years, and can last longer with regular care.

Material Approach

Materials

The following materials have been selected to implement the design approach. Stainless steel is often seen in technology, since machines are made from metal. The dark carpet is incorporating one of the brand colors and draws out the darker shades in stainless steel. When the stainless steel and carpet are combined they create a high-tech appearance in the environment. The light colored bamboo flooring provides a touch of warmth in the cool colored environment, this will allow students and faculty to feel comfortably balanced in their surroundings. As seen in the image to the right, the environment is a cool and high-tech, the warm bamboo flooring balances the colors and attracts light.

Summation




This proposal was developed to improve the environmental graphic design of The Art Institute of Tampa. While improving the signage and wayfinding systems, the environment was also taken in to considerat ion. The sign types were reduced and sign clusters have been eliminated. A new wayfinding system was developed to make navigat ion easy throughout the bui ld ing. Appropr iate materials were selected for the fabrication of signs and the school’s interior design. This was all done with the purpose to create a high-tech environment for the school while implementing their branding, missions, and goals.
