SCHOOL OF KUMBAKONAM keeping in view ofstrong pleas from a section of our reader-ship topublish articles connected with YOGA LINE of Mas-ter C.V.V.

The purpose of this essay is to give a brief ac-count of Master C.V.V. and the School of Yogafounded by him. It will not be out of place to referbriefly to Kaka Bhujandar Nadi and the Dhruva Nadi

before giving a sketch of the Yoga School and itsrevered founder. These are two of the several Nadigrandhas in astrology which deal with predictionsand life readings of human beings. It is not proposedto enter into the accuracy or otherwise of these pre-dictions, etc., here.

The Kaka Bhujandar NadiThe date of the original Kaka Nadi is not known

but is stated to be about the beginning of Kali Yugaor about 3,000 B.C. The Nadi now extant (which is acopy only) was copied from the original in Kali 1,000,i.e., 2,102 B.C. It is in the form of a dialogue in Tamilverses between Kaka Bhujandar and the eighthVasishta. From this it can be infered that Bhujandarhad been the preceptor of seven Vasishtas prior tothe Vasishta of this nadi.

The genesis of the Nadi is described in the docu-ment itself. Once upon a time Bhujander attemptedto see Brahman. Even after having crossed theseven traditional planes, (Maha Paranirvanic, etc.)he could not achieve his object having encounteredwith an adamantine wall on his way which impededhis further progress. Bhujandar sorely disappointed,gave way to lamentation. As if in response to hispiteous cries, there arose a sound from behind thiswall from which he understood that the time was notyet ripe for him to see Brahman, that he would gethis opportunity when the origin is born in man formin the Kundanthai Kshetra (Kumbakonam) after thelapse of 27 Chaturyugas, and in the first yuga of Kaliof the 28th chatur yuga. Bhujander then goes on tosay that the Brahman would be born in a spot to the

East of the Kamakotipeetam adjacent to BhagavadGhattam on the banks of Kahar nadi (the Cauvery).He then gives in detail the planetary positions underwhich the Lord would be born. With the help of thesedetails it is now possible to infer that the founder ofthe Yoga School at Kumbakonam should have beenthe incarnation referred to by Kakar.

The copy of this Nadi that is extant in our Presi-dency is written in Tamil verse. It deals with horo-scopes as its other sister nadis. But the remarkablefeature that is peculiar to this nadi is that it givessuch details of the horoscope readings that it is im-possible for an ordinary astrologer to foretell, viz thename of the place of birth, the accurate time of birth,the name of the native, description of the profes-sion, etc. with great precision. But the purpose ofthis nadi seems mainly to unravel the mysteries ofthis New Yoga. The horoscopes so for scrutinisedrelating to the members of the School of Yoga re-veal the greatness of this nadi. The depth of theknowledge of the author is remarkable. It is all-sidedand super-human. This nadi through mainly writtenin Tamil, indulges in the use of various words relat-ing to other languages like Canarese, Telugu,Hindustani and a large number of English words.And what is more, a number of the verses are com-posed with the names of the several courses of yogawhich Master distributed for practice to the medi-ums. The courses are given mostly in words(sounds) of English and a few in Sanskrit. The criti-cal reader may wonder as to how an ancient nadilike this could contain pure English words of a post

Chaucerian character. This may throw a doubt onthe genuineness of the work. But the facts are thereto judge. This nadi reveals to us the greatness ofthe Master to some extent. He is discribed as thevery Brahman Himself - the Creator of the Universe.

The Dhruva Nadi

In the other nadi - the Dhruva nadi - the Master'shoroscope is described in very eloquent terms. Theauthor of this nadi is Satyacharya who flourishedabout 500 A.D. He is referred to in the Brihathjathakaby Varahamihira. The latter lived around 600 A.D.

Master C.V.V. was to born on the 4th day of Au-gust 1868 at Kumbakonam in the District of Tanjore.Who could have foreseen that this little child was aMahatma of Brahmamsam - the Virat - who tookbirth in the physical for the establishment of a NewLine of Evolution in Creation. He was born in a NiyogiBrahmin Family of Saivite persuasion. The birth tookplace in his father's house in a town with a river flow-ing on either side of it, studded with many templesand consisting of a popular of different casts andcreeds. He was a yogi in his previous life. He is equalto a Virat. He will obtain the knowledge of BrahmaLoka through his second wife. The native will prac-tice an unheard of yoga. It is Briktha Yoga, that heattains and practices in conformity with the currenttimes. The planets rule according to his bidding. Hisamsam is that of Brahma. He is a Mahatma. He isan equal to Brahmavatar. He transforms those ashis equals who bow to him in obeisance. He con-quers death and old age by his yoga. He reigns overBrahma Loka.

The Kakar nadi, on the other hand describes thenative as the very Brahma of the New Evolution. Itrefers to the advent of the Halley's Comet in 5,011of Kali Yuga. This is the time when the revered Mas-ter C.V.V. started his Yoga School on 29th May 1910at Kumbakonam in his 42nd year. The Yoga is calledBriktha Rahitha Tharaka Raja Yogam. The yogacourses were distributed for practice to the initiatedmembers of the school during the span of the next12 years until 31 January 1922. There were 16 Gen-eral Calls by Master during which the memberscalled the mediums - used to gather for the purposeof receiving instruction and courses for practice. TheGeneral Calls were usually held at Kumbakonam inthe premises of the Yoga School. Master himselfspent sometime in 1917 with his mediums at Ma-dras. A total number of 752 mediums were initiatedby Master during the span of these 12 years. Themediums initiated up to the end of 31st January 1922from the beginning of the school were grouped to-gether into the Olidere group. The admissions werefinally closed after 31st January 1922. Three mem-bers were, however initiated by Master subsequentlyand they were grouped as the Master's Link. It wasordered by Master to practise the last course, viz.,OLIDERE III Name prescribed by him until furtheradvice. On 12th May 1922, Master has dissolvedhimself into the elements bidding Ether to work outthe rest of his Glorious Plan. The further advice andthe time of His Returning can be revealed to us byhim alone. The Kakar nadi referes to this event in itsverses. The nadi states that the planets have no in-fluence over this native after his 54th Year.

There are some hints directly given out by Mas-ter to enable us to determine the time for the fruitionof the Yoga after his disappearance. It has been toldthat there will be a change in the Moon. There willbe an appearance of a Comet before the advent ofMaster. The comet will appear near Neptune andthis will be the time for the gathering of the medi-ums. As an evidence of the coming comet, there willirradiate from the kundalini of the mediums, theJyothi of Master. His form will be seen by the medi-ums along with the comet. The face of the Earthchanges on account of frequent earthquakes beforethe fulfilment of the Line. The shaking will be so muchand so frequent that the Earth will increase in itsmass and as a consequence there will be an elon-gation in the duration of the day from 24 to 30 hours.And this will produce dislocation of the planets anda rearrangement of the whole cosmic order. The in-clination of the axis of the Earth will also undergochange. New lands will appear in the ocean-beds.

It is also said that there will be a perception ofLight and a 'memory flash' followed by sound be-fore the completion of Master's work. And until thenit tells the mediums to remain silent. The earth willbe self-luminous and there will be two Moons to theearth and Venus. These canges are said to happenat the commercement of the direct working of theLine.

There are references to the Theosophical Soci-ety founded by Col. Olcott and Madam Blavatsky in1873 at Newyork. There are also references to Mrs.Annie Besant and Mr. Leadbeater. It is said that the

members of the T.S. will join the Yoga School to getthe benefits of this yoga. There are also referencesto Suddha Dharma Mandalam of N.India and theOrder of the Star.

The principles of the school have been explainedby Kaka Bhujandar with reference to music sym-bols, ragams of Indian music, science of drumming,games of cards and other things.

Master appears after breaking the present silenceas he was before. It is said he will make his appear-ance to his disciples at the dead of night on a cer-tain day which he alone would reveal. It is punninglystated by the author who interrogates : - "Dost Thouappear in the dead of night, because Thou thinkestthat the world is full of sinners and that they shouldnot see Thee?"

Regarding the time, manner and sequence ofdevelopment, Master has given us some illustrations:

Just as a hen knows the time for pecking at theshell of the egg to let out the developed chicken in-side which is ready to come out, so Master knowsthe time to give the hint to his mediums about themoment of completion.

Another illustration given by him is that of themanufacturing of a watch in a factory. The neces-sary wheels, pinions, screws etc., of a watch aremade in different spots of the factory (in our case -the body) ; they are assembled together by the me-chanic ; the main-spring is wound and it is only whenthe final shake is given the motion begins and theconception of a working mechanism - as a watch -comes to us.

There is a third illustration regarding the se-quence of development which Master referred to -viz., the case of an Electric Installation for lightingpurposes. The electric plant is installed for generat-ing electricity. Posts are planted and connected withwires and bulbs are fitted. A main switch is fixed toconnect the flow of energy with the wires and bulbs.When the switch is put on the energy flows on rap-idly through the wires and illuminates the differentbulbs in quick succession. No doubt there is someinterval being very negligible. So is the develop-ment of mediums at the time of completion.

The ideal of the Line is to make the people onthis planet live in peace, with plenty, without want,disease, decay and death in Eternity in an immortalembodied state. It is to attain a state of 'Jivan Mukta'quite independent of the cosmic laws that govern allLife at present. The New Yoga is to usher in a PureMerry Life bereft of all pain and misery. And theprophecy in the Corinthians "The last enemy thatshall be destroyed is Death" will come to pass.

Like all other yogas, this yoga is also based onthe rousing or kindling of "Kundalini". It recognisesthe seven abstract planes of Mahaparanirvanic,Paranirvanic etc., but with this difference. The knowl-edge is not obtained here in the Samadhic state. Itis obtained in the physical conscious state. Theknowledge of the seven planes is unified and madeto act in one plane say the eighth plane - an abso-lute physical plane of consciousnmess. Whereas theold yogas had not attached much importance to theeternal keep-up of the physical body, this yoga places

it in the foremost of its principles. The body will beone self-created by the medium (yogi) by dint of prac-tice of the yoga and therefore independent of ordi-nary creative factors and elements. A continuity orbridge will be established between the supra-cos-mic states and the physical cosmic state. There isthus no room for delusion of any kind of phenom-enon or abstractivism.

This yoga is not based on any ancient texts likethe Upanishads, the Bhagavathgita, etc., It is uniqueand unparallelled in its conception. The existingknowledge shows us certain clear cut ways andmeans which have not been able to take man out ofthe vicious circle of births and deaths with all theattendent want, pain, misery, disease, etc., of life onthis Earth.

"The old order changeth giving place to new,Lest one good custom should corrupt the world."The world is ever-changing. There is nothing like

a constant factor except perhaps in mathematics.The Law of Nature is dynamic. The in-flow of en-ergy into the cosmos from the super-cosmic fieldsis perpetually though implerceptably effecting achange in the nautre of things. Evolution is dynamicand not static.

The current philosophical truths which our an-cient texts teach us, require to be carefully analysedand reassessed. The categories - Immortality, Mukti,Existence, Karma, Nirvana etc., have to be reval-ued. Thus according to this school 'Immortality'

means the conquest of death 'here' and not a beliefin not being born after death. The goal is not one ofstopping 'births' or 'rebirths'. The foundation of anypragmatic philosophy should be on the factual worldof experience. In the practical metaphysics of life,the conquest of disease, decay and death, want,misery, poverty, etc., should be included and an ac-tive attempt should be made to eliminate them fromthe aspect of all embodied life. The mere promiseof a future heaven after death has become staleenough to give the necessary urge to life of man tolive on inspite of pleasure and all the allurements oflife here.

To realise Brahman would mean to attain Immor-tality in our sense of the term. It should be applied tothings mortal. There is no meaning in applying it tothings already immortal in their nature. What is mortalshould be transformed into immortal. Man shouldacquire the knowledge of the Self - the immortal prin-ciple - in him. Death should not be viewed as apermanent accident of all embodied life.

Mukti is freedom from re-births. The attainmentof freedom from re-birth is a state which we cannotverify with our limited knowledge. We have a dis-embodied (non-physical) state after death. The con-tinued state of embodied existence only is know-able and verifiable. A mukta, therefore must be em-bodied (physical) jivan mukta. It is a type of embod-ied life which is yet to come into existence. The pre-vailing ideas of a jivan mukta are in the abstract only

(existing in idea merely).Karma is commonly understood as the result of

an action in the past life or birth. This presupposesa life before the present birth or rather a life afterdeath. When the first life began to function or karmawas acquired, it is futile to attempt to determine. If ithas no beginning, it has also no end.

"Life and existence" should be understood as aunity and as not two separate categories. They areone concrete fact. It is this fact that has to be estab-lished by aiming at physical immortality. The immor-tality should be self-evolved and not dependent onexternal factors. This is real "Independency" a stateof existence which is unlimited by the cosmic lawsgoverning life on this planet. It includes a self-cre-ative power with self-direction and control. It is onlysuch a state of embodied existence that can becalled independent in any sense of the term. Andsuch existence alone can be said to be the full ex-pression of life capable of exhibiting all the qualitiesand potentialities of life and functioning as a com-plete unit by itself. This is the full efflorescence oflife.

Again the value of attachment, renunciation, re-pression etc., should be reassessed in the light ofthe above theory. Neither repression of senses norabsolute self-control are commendable. The desiresare best controlled after full enjoyment. Else to sup-press the desire by whatever means leads only tothe lurking of the appetite though latently, and when

the control is lost leads to disaster. Good and badqualities are not absolute. As heat and cold are themanifestations of the same energy though differentlyappellated, there is a dual aspect to every category.

Maya ordinarily means 'avidya' or illusion. Spiritand Matter are two aspects of Reality. Knowledgeof these two aspects of Reality. Knowledge of thesetwo aspects of Reality enables us to understand theunity in the diversity of things, in this Universe. Toobtain this knowledge is to know Brahman Himself -the absolute cause of all creation. And this knowl-edge has to be obtained by direct method and meansin the physical plane of consciousness.

Purusha and Prakriti : Purusha is positive, malefactor and Prakriti is negative, female factor of thecreation. The goal should be to attain a state of con-scious union by each positive and negative factor -male and female. The state of Ardhanariswara - Sivawith His Sakti united - is the ideal. The goal of Evo-lution points to the realisation of this ideal. The goalof Evolution points to the realisation of this ideal inthe concrete Realm of Reality.
