Relay for Life: o 8 sponsors thus far, more welcomed. o Lisa has donation boxes which can be placed at

your workplace. o Relay registration forms required ASAP please. o Donations are also welcome if you can’t

participate in the relay. o A possible fundraiser may be held on 2 March –

details TBC.

Breathometers: o A further grant has been approved for the

purchase of three further machines – great result!

Kenya:

A delegation of 25 departs on 14 September which will visit our two new projects – New Hope for Widows and Orphans, and the Obstetric Fistula Program.

20 children are now receiving an education through the New Hope project.

A possible joint project conducting cleft palate surgery is being investigated with the RC of Box Hill North. Richard Lawrence – Community

Caroline Chisholm Society: o The food drive was a resounding success however most supplies have now been distributed and further

donations will be gladly accepted throughout the year. o The shoebox appeal has proven a huge success in the past but this has not been replicated this year–

shoeboxes are available from Lisa Lowcock should you wish to assist in this worthwhile activity.

Car Boot Sale will be held on 3 and 17 March in Niddrie (please see flyer later in this edition). This will be promoted in the local paper and through the distribution of 10,000 flyers to local homes. Many hands will be needed to ensure a successful event.

o As 60% of funds raised must be spent on road safety initiatives, the current plan is to sponsor a ‘Fit to Drive’ (F2D) program for students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

o Richard emphasised the hard work put in by Alistair Fraser to ensure the success of the Breathometer project – well done Alistair!

Rowallan signage is to be improved to accurately reflect our Club’s long-standing involvement and a history statement will be erected in the car park to tell the Rowallan story.

Gellibrand Residential Services will be assisted in the replacement of swing frames at their country campuses. This will involve labour rather than a financial contribution.

The graffiti cleanup for the ‘Rotarians at Work Day’ will occur on 21 April in Essendon, focussing on the Rose Street train station area. Moonee Valley City Council will supply the materials which will be used to over-paint existing graffiti.

Michael Pepi – Fellowship Members have enjoyed a varied calendar of social events in our first six months.

A successful Australia day BBQ was held at the home of Rob and Jan Thomas last weekend – thanks to all involved.

Assistance will be provided for the Relay for Life weekend in March.

Charter Night will be at Ascot House in May – a special guest speaker to be announced soon.

President’s Night in June, venue TBA. Financial Summary:

Project account balance at 1 July 2012 was approximately $100,000; it now stands at approximately $130,000 ($60K Philippines, $10K DIK rent/other assistance, $40K general projects, balance committed to Myanmar and Kenyan projects).

Administration account has sufficient to meet all outgoings without retaining an unnecessarily surplus.

President Grant stressed that Board is not looking to retain huge account balances but seeks to spend available funds on worthy projects. All members have the opportunity to present potential projects through their committee chairs and all ideas are welcome.

Grant also sought a new member nomination from each table by the end of the lunch meeting with a handful of names put forward. New Generations/Vocational and Club Service Committee updates will provided in the near future.

Last Wednesday our Cluster clubs competed in a lawn bowls night. The Rotary Club of Essendon was ably represented by Colin Bell and not so ably represented by Grant & Margie Sheldon and our exchange student, Charlotte Salmon. Our highlights were that we won an end with 4 scoring bowls and Margie produced the bowl of the night (photo below). The lowlight was that we failed to bother the scorer losing all three of our matches.

Sorry Club – over to someone else to represent us better next year!! A good time was had by all and thanks to Norm Draper and the Rotary Club of Keilor for organising a very enjoyable night.

Cluster Bowls Competition

A quick joke while you’re reading On a bitterly cold winter’s morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "Today we’ll have 8 to 10 inches of snow. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snowplows can get through." So the good wife went out and moved her car. A week or so later while they were eating breakfast again and the radio announcer said, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snowplows can get through." The good wife went out and moved her car again. A few days later they were again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...." Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplows can get through?" Then with the love and understanding that all long-married husbands possess, he replied, "Why don't you just leave the car in the garage this time?" (Courtesy of Richard Lawrence – you don’t think your editor wants to incur the wrath of all the ladies?)

Philippines Delegation The Club will be sending a shipment of goods to the Philippines in March, 2013. Donations of towels, sheets, new pillows, children’s books, school shoes, stationery and toys suitable for kindergarten would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be given to Shirley or Cathy in March or we can pick up from your premises.

Australia Day at Rob and Jan’s

About forty revellers celebrated Australia Day in style with our traditional get together at the home of Rob & Jan Thomas. After a cloudy start the skies cleared to a warm and sunny afternoon and Michael and Judy Pepi’s culinary expertise ensured no-one was left hungry. Roger Leask provided an entertaining historical quiz while granddaughter Avery displayed her dancing talents!

Sincere thanks to Rob and Jan for once again opening up their home to us for our National Day and to Neil Henderson, Anne Rogers and Peter Duras for their hard work.

A fresh faced exchange student and a not quite so fresh faced one (note the jacket still fits – although doing it up may be a challenge!)

Exchange students over the years

Of great interest to our longer-standing members would be that Anne & Barry Rogers stay in touch with both Tomoko and Yuki, previous exchange students from Japan. Anne writes: ‘Tomoko lives in Tokyo so we get to see her from time to time – most recently a few weeks ago. Members from around 1991 will recall Tomoko as a wonderful girl, a gifted singer, and outstanding at martial arts. Her (quite young) father passed away suddenly at about the three month mark of her exchange, and naturally Tomoko went home however, her very progressive mother sent her back here a short time later to complete her year with us’. ‘Fast forward to now, Tomoko lives in Tokyo, although she is spending a lot of time in Kochi (a long way south) with her Mum who, sadly, is suffering from terminal stomach cancer, and has been given only a short time to live. So, for the moment, Tomoko is between jobs – having resigned her role at GE to be free to spend time with Fumiko, her Mum. She is also engaged at long last: to a guy she assures us is a good man except “his eyes are too small”! He is an assistant to a famous Manga artist in Tokyo. Manga is uniquely Japanese and therefore largely a mystery to us however, I was a bit concerned when Tomoko said he “draws pictures for adult magazines”, because I recall that flight attendants routinely hand out porn mags to businessmen on internal flights in Japan so we were relieved to be shown examples of his work in a bookshop, and it was your bog standard war comics, sci-fi and so on!!’ ‘Tomoko continues to sing – sometimes with a band, and she actually made a CD which, after about five years of pleading, we finally have a copy of, and it’s really good’. ‘Yuki, who was hosted by the club a few years after Tomoko, lives outside Kyoto, and is married with a couple of adorable little kids’.

An official flag was formally adopted by Rotary International at the 1929 Convention in Dallas, Texas. The Rotary flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field. The four depressed spaces on the rim of the Rotary wheel are colored royal blue. The words "Rotary" and "International" printed at the top and bottom depressions on the wheel rim are also gold. The shaft in the hub and the keyway of the wheel are white.

The Official Rotary Flag

The first official Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City, Missouri, in January 1915. In 1922 a small Rotary flag was carried over the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Winchester, Virginia, Rotary Club. Four years later, the admiral carried a Rotary flag in his expedition to the North Pole. Some Rotary clubs use the official Rotary flag as a banner at club meetings. In these instances it is appropriate to print the words "Rotary Club" above the wheel symbol, and the name of the city, state or nation below the emblem. The Rotary flag is always prominently displayed at the World Headquarters as well as at all conventions and official events of Rotary International.

Some Rotary ‘Firsts’

The first Rotary club meeting was in Chicago, Illinois, on February 23, 1905 The first regular luncheon meetings were in Oakland, California, chartered in 1909 The first Rotary convention was in Chicago in 1910 The first Rotary club outside of the United States was chartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in

1910 The first Rotary club outside of North America was chartered in Dublin, Ireland, in 1911 The first Rotary club in a non-English-speaking country was in Havana, Cuba, in 1916 The first Rotary club in South America was chartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1918 The first Rotary club in Asia was chartered in Manila, Philippines, in 1919 The first Rotary club in Africa was chartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1921 The first Rotary club in Australia was chartered in Melbourne in 1921

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has flown to Hawaii to accept a peace award. The lawmaker and Nobel Peace laureate will deliver an address at the Rotary Global Peace Forum meeting in Honolulu and accept an award lauding her commitment to nonviolent activism and human rights. The trip will be her first to the American island state. Daw Suu Kyi flew out of Yangon on 24 January. On her return she will also visit South Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the 2013 Special Olympics.
