PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Namaskaru, and a Very Happy & Prosperous Diwali to all of us! This month has been a very busy one for all of us. As everyone prepares, and looks forward to our Diwali Gala, we want to ensure that all had an opportunity to partici-pate. For those of you who could not for any reason, be sure to contact and stay con-nected for the Ugadi and our other events that will be announced. Our Diwali func-tion on Nov 4th is our Marquee event – A gala! Rest assured we will have great fun together and celebrate the festival of lights with fanfare. So, put on your dancing shoes, bring your good attitude, and let’s get together for a fun extravaganza where our youth, kids, sisters and brothers of the community come together to showcase their talents. Thank you for your tremendous support and the love that poured in last week. I also thank all the participants for setting aside the time and commitment to make it to the practice sessions. Thank you to Niranjan for patiently organizing the Newslet-ter!! Thank you to all who have agreed to contribute meaningful articles to the newsletter. Please have it in by November 10 for our November issue. A big Thank you to our Sponsors! Please read about them in this issue. If you would like to be a sponsor do contact us at [email protected] We keep the suggestions and solutions door open for you to provide your feedback. A big Thanks! to some of you who provided your feedback and suggestions with your real name and contact. We are happy to get back to you right away. Due to popular demand we have included Nandita’s rose milk recipe from Dandiya. Please read and prepare it from our recipe corner. Be sure to let us know how it came out! Last week, the EC committee was very disappointed and shocked when we received a malicious, and spiteful email (with fake ID) bcc’d to a few of us in the community- in a very disrespectful tone towards our community women. And that too during Diwali! After all, the saying goes – यत्र नाययसु्त पूज्यने्त रमने्त तत्र देवता: Yatra Naaryastu Puujyante ramanthe tathra Devataaha -Where women are wor-shipped, there the Gods rejoice! We once again reiterate– Please keep your suggestions and feedback in a respectful and constructive fashion and direct it to [email protected]. A lot of effort, hard work and preparation by volunteers and community members goes into the events. We will not entertain nor respond to emails bcc’d or otherwise that are spiteful and rude. Thanking everyone in advance for understanding! We take this time to offer our pranams to Sri Satyanarayana Moolky Shenoy who passed recently. Please do take the time to read about this wonderful person in the memory section shared in this newsletter. As Presidents of Ontario Konkani Association 2017-2018, we would like to show case our Konkani community. You will have noticed that we are driving more news distribution through our web, face book page and now, our monthly e-newsletter. If you have not done so already, please visit our website and Facebook page. We have tons of events to get together!

AIYOOOOO!! JEEB JOLLNU GHELLE…

By: Your Loving Mamamma

Jeeb jhollnu jathari kassale khavche !!! A very angry Kachri Mai taking it on the first person she spots aka Her Bhammonu. With all the calmness he could muster like all other Bhammon’s he started his talk that sounded like a Pravachan to the already over the top irritated Kachri mai. He said palle…. Migelle Mammunma ni maak san-gille kassale korka mohnu… There are 5 easy home-remedies that will help you get rid of that burning sensation in your tongue effectively and quickly. Really Kachu… just 5 things… Kachu by now is looking to grab any object that can fit in both her hand to give this morsel in front of her one resounding Tannnnnnnn!!!!!( like two taal’s hitting each other)

Bhammon trudges along to tell

her the 5 things:

1. Sugar: A very sim ple and

easily available remedy for

tongue-burns, sugar works as a

soothing agent, and therefore

helps provide you relief from the burning sensation in your tongue. Apart from that,

it also betters the taste in your mouth.

2. Mint This amazingly quick remedy to a burnt tongue helps you as it contains menthol that helps activate the cold-sensing nerves. Plus, it numbs-down the area and helps reduce inflammation, so you naturally feel better. 3. Honey: The antibacter ial nature of honey helps prevent the bacter ia from affecting the damaged skin. Not just that, honey being a natural anti-inflammatory agent, it is also a great choice for reducing swelling and pain. 4. Yogurt: W ith its soothing and cooling nature, yogurt helps you get r id of the burning in your mouth from piping-hot food, as it takes away the heat from the burn

5. Aloe Vera: W hat Aloe Vera does to a burn is that it soothes dow n the

damaged cells on the tongue, reduces pain and inflammation, therefore turning out

to be a great remedy for a burnt tongue.

Before Kachri Mai can do that Tannnnnn!!! Bhammon very lovingly puts honey in

her mouth. The reaction was almost instantaneous. She dropped the object (on clos-

er observation it was a Coconut (…. Narllu re) hugged her hubby and lived yappily

yever afteru….

Courtesy: Nanditha Krishna | Chennai I bet you did not know this…. Sambar is said to have originated in the kitchen of Shahji Bhonsle (1684 to 1711 CE), son of Ekoji, founder of the Maratha rule of Thanjavur and Chhatrapati Shivaji's step-brother. Shahji's greatest contribution was to architecture and literature, especially in Telu-gu, but he enjoyed dabbling in cooking too. On one occasion, he wanted to eat amti dhal (Maharashtrian dhal), which has ko-kum as one of its main ingredients. Kokum is a plant belonging to the mangosteen family from the western ghats coast-line. Its outer cover is dried and powdered and used as a slightly sour spice in Ma-harashtrian cooking. But kokum was out of supply at that time. We don't know whether it was the cooks or Shahji himself who experimented by substituting it with tamarind, but the combination of lentils, vegetables, spices and tamarind was a great success and was first served when Shahji's cousin Sambha or Sambhaji (1657-1689), son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, visited Thanjavur. It was named “Sambhache ahar“ (Sambha's food) or “sambhar“ and became a royal dish at the Thanjavur palace. Thus it was invented in Thanjavur, not in Maharash-tra. This story was narrated to me by Pandit Bhim Rao, the late Marathi Pandit of the Sarasvati Mahal Library, who referred to a manuscript written in Modi (मममम) script in which this was recorded.

Ontario Konkani Seniors Initiatives (Updates and Follow-ups)

By Sadanand Mankikar

Since early 2016, the Ontario Konkani Seniors’ Group has been actively organizing

events to bring the seniors closer and improve community knowledge on issues re-

lated to seniors living.

As a reminder some of the highlights include:

Brainstorming Session: The highlight of this session held on October 22, 2016 was

two, hour-long breakout sessions followed by general discussion where we were

able to get input on the socio-cultural support needed by our seniors as well as the

need and possibilities of building our own seniors’ residence.

SVBF Seniors’ Day: This highly successful event was attended by over 200 seniors

where Hon. Deepika Damerla, Minister of Seniors’ Affairs was the Chief Guest.

The Ontario Liberal Caucus –Indian Friendship Group Meeting: The session held

on March 21, 2017 was attended by approximately 70 community leaders and four

other provincial ministers as well as four MPPs.

Seniors’ Survey: This survey conducted in April 2017, gathered critical stats on sen-

iors in our community. Shraddha Pai had shared a summary of this survey with the

OKA Seniors’ Group.

Focus Group Meeting Conducted as a follow up to the October 2016 Brainstorming

Session, resulted in well thought out plans both in terms of Socio-Cultural Support

System as well as Seniors’ Housing Options.

Building Connected Communities: In this Research Project on Social Isolation Amongst Immigrants, funded by the Federal Government and conducted at the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research, 15 seniors from our community took part. South Asian Forum by Sheridan Centre for Elder Research: Even though loneliness and isolation amongst South Asian Immigrants was the major focus of this Forum held on June 16, 2017, there was ample time for sharing the information on services provided by various community organizations. First Ontario Konkani Seniors’ Lunch: Over 80 OKA seniors and their families and friends marked the Seniors’ Day 2017 with an informal lunch on Sunday June 25, 2017 at the Grand Taj Banquet and Convention Centre in Mississauga. The attendees aged from four months to late eighties enjoyed a great buffet lunch, karaoke and bingo.

OKA Grant for Seniors’ Program: Recognizing the ongoing contributions by the sen-iors and their continued efforts in building and maintaining a strong Konkani com-munity in Ontario, OKA EC 2016-2017 has given a grant of $ 1,500 to the Seniors’ Group. SOCIO-CULTURAL SUPPORT SYSTEM The goal of this program is to improve access of OKA seniors to social and cultural activities, provide community-based avenues for non-medical support, and increase knowledge about the practical aspects of retired living. 1. Resource page on OKA website: A webpage with links to services and documents

of relevance to the people in our community, with a focus on seniors. It will con-tain links to public services such as WheelTrans/Darts, and also OKA-driven programs like Carpool and Buddy system. Lead: Shraddha Pai

2. Interactive forum for seniors and support: We are creating a community mailing list to share information, events, and ask questions within the community, A program called OKA Aadhaar Chat will be launched soon. Lead: Shraddha Pai

3. Carpool: Community members wanting rides to/from OKA events can now co-ordinate this through a single person. We have already communicated the initia-tion of this program. Lead: Ajay Rao

4. Buddy system: Seniors who would benefit from routine phone or in-person con-tact can now have a “buddy” or contact point in the community. We have a bank of volunteers ready to support, but need to identify who needs what support. We have already communicated the initiation of this program. Lead: Shraddha Pai

5. Emergency awareness: During a crisis, having a complete medical and non-medical emergency kit and information for contacts (within or outside the com-munity) can improve how the situation is handled. This program will familiarize the OKA members on how to prepare such kits. OKA will also establish Emer-gency Coordinators and a central place with relevant resources (e.g. priest con-tact numbers, funeral homes, legal matters, government services etc.) Lead: Suvarna Mankikar

6. Information sessions/workshops/seminars: This program will improve commu-nity knowledge on health, legal, financial planning and important services avail-able for seniors from governments and communities. Lead: Mahesh Nileshwar, with help from Veena Shanbhag and Sadanand Mankikar

7. Social Activities: The leads will organize regular outings, networking opportuni-ties, and regular club-style get-togethers for the seniors. Committee: Kashi Nayak, Mahesh Nileshwar, Hemant Tallur, Ajay and Chitra Rao

8. Tech Support: Seniors can now learn how to navigate new and emerging tech-nology from those more tech-savvy in the community i.e. computers, programs, smartphones, etc.. Lead: Minakshi Pai

LONG-TERM HOUSING OPTIONS

Nirvana, a group of a few like-minded friends who had started informally exploring the possibility of a suitable community living for South East Asian seniors has been meeting regularly since April 30. This group has come to the agreement that there is a definite need for a community-based adult life style housing to facilitate independent and assisted living. It was also noted that this can be achieved only with the collaboration of various communities. Concerns discussed include: Readiness and commitment from the seniors to move; location and availability of land; the cost for a feasibility study and for building/purchasing the facility; regulatory requirements; expertise, experience and knowledge needed; time and efforts needed on the part of volun-teers as well as professionals, etc. Regardless, the group feels that it is worthwhile to continue to work on this project.

Born on April 12, 1926 in Puttur, Karnataka, India, he was the eldest of 4 children. He joined Indian army as a 19 year old and as part of his education in the military, did Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME). His 28 years of service in the military earned him assignments all over India: NEFA (North East Frontier Agency), Ranchi, Ahmednagar, Baroda, and Secunderabad, before he retired as a Subedar. He participated in World War II, Indo-China war (1962); Indo-Pak wars (1965 & 1971) earning him the King George and Indian Independence medals for his service. As part of his duties in the army, he trained military officers on the finer aspects of running battle tanks and fixing them as well as on electronics and RADAR. He earned several accolades from his senior officers for his diligence and meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of his professional duties. Satya married a beautiful and charming young woman, Sharada in May, 1958 and they started their married life in Ranchi, India. Soon they had five loving children and he and his family moved together during each assignment. Satya retired from the Indian army in 1973 and settled in Puttur, Karnataka along with his family at a still young age of 48. As an ex-serviceman he tried his hand at other business ventures like running an oil agency, a transport truck, and running a grocery store, until he finally settled into a second career in accounting and banking in Puttur and Mangalore, Karnataka. His property in Puttur had a large piece of land. He had a green thumb and soon his handcrafted home garden yielded abundance of man-goes, jackfruit, Sapota (chickoo), pineapple, bananas, Coconuts, cashew, star fruit, custard apple, etc. and many vegetables, which he distributed generously to his friends and family. As their children left home, as empty nesters they spent their time visiting friends and their children and grandchildren. After the sudden death of his wife Sharada in 2008, Satya relocated to Canada to live with his daughter & their family in Cambridge, Ontario. He was quick to settle in and felt at home in his garden (lovingly named "Grandpa's Garden") and soon had vegetables & flowers growing in abundance. He believed in physical fitness and was known by all his neighbours for his daily walks (twice) and practicing yoga every day. He travelled all over eastern Canada and dared to go rafting on the Grand River and hiking the Niagara Trails. Forever young at heart, he enjoyed partying with friends and having his famous Johnny Walker Black Label. He was not deterred by his first stroke in 2013 and recovered completely and even made a trip to India. His second stroke in 2015 reduced his physical mobility considerably. Because of Satya's unremitting passion for knowledge, his children studied and achieved career successes in technology, finance, manufacturing, chemical engineering and philosophy. In addition, he quietly nudged his grandchildren to study hard and was proud to extol his grand children's successes in information technology, electronic gaming, packaging engineering, pharmaceuticals, banking, professional management, hotel management, industrial engineering and advanced research in computer science.

Satya was a mild mannered, jovial person, well-liked by all. While in Canada he had become the universal grandpa to all youngsters and they lovingly called him "Ajja" or Grandpa in Konkani language. Satya was humble and had never uttered a nega-tive word in his life. He had an excellent memory and met other army veterans and a seniors group on a regular basis, while in Canada. He was fluent in Konkani, Hin-di, Kannada, English, Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam and Tulu. He enjoyed watching Asian Television Network, while staying in Cambridge. He had an inquisi-tive mind and he kept up to date with cricket scores, and politics in India & Canada. His family and friends miss him immensely and will always remember him as the sweet, gentle and loving person that he was. http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Satyanarayana-Shenoy&lc=3763&pid=186473981&mid=7535551
