EDITORIALAfter a year of trends and innovations, we invite you to read the latest news from around our Logoplaste world.

The prize for best training program (for the second year) and the prize for best environ-mental or energy initiative won at the “Plas-tics Industry Awards 2013” demonstrates once again our company’s good practices. These best practices are also revealed, in this issue, from the Logoplaste team in Portugal and we can see that we can do more with small changes.

We emphasize the importance of our team building activities in this edition which take place in all regions.

Launched in 2001, the Plastics Industry Awards are known as the Oscars of the UK

plastics industry, and reward excellence in mate-rials usage, design and manufacturing as well as training and environmental performance.

With 15 categories judged by a panel of industry experts, there are opportunities for supplier companies, OEM manufacturers, plastics processors, consultants and designers to all showcase their work.

The Awards Ceremony took place on 27th September at the London Hilton on Park Lane. The ceremony, in its 13th year was hosted by actor and comedian Tim Vine and attended by a audience of more than 800 guests.

For Logoplaste Coleford environmental pro--gramme with GlaxoSmithKline, which saw PET material waste cut by 65%, Logoplaste won the “Best Energy or Environmental Initiative of the year award”. Logoplaste also won the “Best Training & Development of the year” award – this is the second year Logo-plaste has won this award.

Logoplaste UK was also finalist into the following categories: “Processor of the year” and “Apprentice/Trainee of the year – Steve Amos” from Logoplaste Thurrock.

Congratulations to the team and thanks for all the hard work and effort that went into the submissions this year.

The next edition will take place in 2014 on Friday 24th October at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

One more year, Logoplaste Vietnam’s employees gathered around the Ti Amo

Restaurant last September 15th, 2013 in order to spend a day practicing Team Building expe-riences.

Through several exercises in a collaborative climate, team goals were created, encoura-ging standards of excellence while striving for unified commitment.

The overall goals of team building are to increase the teams understanding of team dynamics and improve how the team works together. Unlike working as a group, working as a team incorporates group accountability rather than individual accountability and results in a collective work product. Team building encourages the team approach to working on a project. Advantages to this approach include:

• Increased flexibility in skills and abilities

• More productive than work groups with individual mindset

• More beneficial in times of organizational change

• Encourage both individual and team development and improvement

• Focuses on group goals to accomplish more beneficial tasks

• Improved range of team building objectives such as collaboration, communication and increased creative or flexible thinking

The Logoplaste Iberia operations meeting took place last 8th and 9th of October

in the city of Sigüenza, Spain; with 38 parti-cipants from Portugal and Spain, in which all plant managers were present. This meeting was without a doubt an excellent opportunity to spread all the activities and good doings throughout the region, with the presence of the CEO Alexandre Relvas and the President Mr. Marcel de Botton.

After leaving the Madrid airport, on the first day, the participants were able to visit the Guadalajara plant (Madrid), which was

followed by a lunch with the presence of the Operations Manager of Lactalis Nestlé Spain – Daniel Fuhrer. After lunch the team left for Sigüenza, where there was a team building activity to fortify team spirit before dinner.

The second and last day was for internal presentations of the several Iberia Operations areas (Finance, Operations, Quality, Buying, Technical).

Above all, those 2 days were all about sharing internal information and reinforcing the region’s team spirit.

NEW pARTNER IN CASTELO BRANCO

Last September Danone sold its activity in Portugal to the North American Schreiber

Foods. This deal also involved Danone in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

The plant in Castelo Branco, specialized in the production of dairy products (yoghurts), has an annual productive capacity of 110.000 tons. In spite of its new ownership, the ex-Danone plant will continue to make Danone products and maintain all its jobs.

In 2013, Logoplaste Castelo Branco increased its production, mainly because of its new Danone DanUP packaging (with a new image and improved formula). The brand prepared a campaign aimed at a younger audience, through several initiatives throughout the country with the new packaging essentially embracing a more fun, irreverent, cool and modern look.

ABOuT DANONE IN pORTuGALIn the Danone universe of about half a hundred plants, the plant in Castelo Branco was considered the 6th best in the world. Before Danone´s entry in Portugal, the annual yoghurt consumption per person was about 8kg, compared to today’s 23kg.

ABOuT SCHREIBER FOODSFounded in 1945 Schreiber Foods has grown a lot throughout the years, becoming the largest producer of dairy products in the world and aiming to apply its high quality standards to the European market.

Leader in innovation, it has more than 6,000 employees worldwide that work together in creating tailor-made solutions, high quality products and services for their clients.

Apart from the US (where the company was born), it is present in Brazil, Mexico, India, Germany, Austria and now also in Portugal, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.

3rd year apprentice at Logoplaste (Thurrock) UK wins, The

Worshipful Company of Horners and Cogent Gold Standard Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award 2013

Our World Our WorldA A

The worshipful company of Horner’s is an ancient guild and livery company and

a modern London city institution. The first historic reference to the company was recorded in 1284. As horn was inexpensive and readily available, the use of horn for lanterns, beakers, musical instruments and storage vessels has been evident since time immemorial.

The company has links with the British Plas-tics Federation, and since 1943 have been working closely with the plastics industry to help promote the image of plastics and it’s established and developing technologies.

Cogent is the sector skills council for the polymer industry, and they work alongside Horners in the selection criteria and nomina-tions for the award. Cogent have a demanding gold standard apprenticeship and the criteria for the winning apprentice is set against these exacting standards.

The Worshipful Company of Horners & Cogent Gold Standard Polymer Appren-tice of the Year Award is a prestigious award that recognises the commitment & drive of apprentices in the polymer industry.

All candidates must be employed within a polymer related industry, be engaged in, or

have completed in the last 12 months a full apprenticeship at either level 2 or 3, and have had sufficient time in programme to be able to demonstrate quantifiable achievements, both academic and in-company.

At the time of submission Logoplaste UK had five apprentices employed at three of our UK sites. Due to the criteria, only one apprentice met the standards needed for entry onto the award.

Steve Amos at the time was a second year electrical engineering apprentice and had been employed with Logoplaste Thurrock for five years, starting his career with Logo-plaste as a trainee technician. Steve demons-trates he confronts every task with a can-do attitude producing excellent results. He has also received excellent results for his prac-tical and written assignments during his time at college, resulting in distinctions for some of his course work. During the time in his apprenticeship he had planned maintenance & improvement work while on site, and had two internal projects running in parallel. As most apprentices are considered to be 16 – 18 year old school leavers, Steve has proven that at 39 years old, great results can be produced by apprentices in any age group.

Our World Our WorldA A

Steve’s achievements were documented and sent to Cogent for the judging panel to review. Steve was selected as a finalist in December 2013; a cogent representative visited Steve at the Thurrock site and discussed his appren-ticeship, his results, his college work and his role since joining Logoplaste. Steve also gave a thorough site tour and a detailed Thurrock process overview. The interviewer left the site very impressed with the facility, and was very complimentary towards Steve and his attitude to the apprenticeship program.

The judging panel considered all of the submis-sion notes from each finalist and made their decision based on course work, commitment to the apprenticeship, the entry criteria and the overall impression of the person during the finalist interview.

The announcement was made to Logoplaste on January 14th 2014 and Steve was made aware the following day.

Steve was invited and attended an award event at the Carpenters hall in central London on Monday February 10th, along with his wife Katie and Greg Jones, engineering manager Thurrock. This is only the second year the awards have taken place and include the Livery Companies Skills Council Master Certificate

Scheme; this includes awards for the wax industry, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers, horners, pavers, clockmakers, wheelwrights & light mongers.

The event was attended by award winners, colleagues, family members and representa-tives from Horners and Cogent. The awards were handed out by the Horners master - Jack Bunyer, and the Lord Mayor of London - Alderman Fiona Woolf . Steve received a £500 cheque, a certificate of achievement and the Horners horn.

Steve commented “It was a great honour to receive the award and a very proud day”.

This is a great achievement for Steve personally and for Logoplaste as an apprentice provider. It demonstrates the approach we take towards the learning & development of our appren-tices is world class and sets a standard for our other UK apprentices to follow.

I hope you will all join me in congratulating Steve and wish him all the best for his future career within Logoplaste.

STARpACK AWARDS

2013 - uK The challenge was to design a bottle or container suitable for use with any washing or cleaning products (washing up liquids, fabric conditioners, hand soaps, toilet cleaner, multi surface cleaners). The challenge was to gene-rate a design offering a unique new shape for a bottle or container for your chosen product/s and show where you may have taken your inspiration from because more and more today design inspiration comes from nature (Biomimicry) – using nature and biology as the design process.

On the 4th December 2013, Logoplaste Hatfield was lucky enough to again host the winning school for the 2013 StarPack awards. Logistics of a 10 hour round trip to Logoplaste Coleford, ‘The Home of Ribena’ was not possible so Coleford came to Hatfield.

Mr. Gary Gray, Manufacturing Manager at Logoplaste Coleford, (who had already judged the entries with Mr. Chris Clarke of ILab UK), presented to the students video footage of the complete process in making a Ribena bottle, from granular form to completion and its journey to the shops.

Other Presentations included Mr. Clarke from ILab UK and why we need innovative packa-ging solutions in an ever changing market, and Mr. Andy Cairns gave a video and infor-mative presentation on what they would see during the factory tour. Lunch was provided while we ran a quiz, with factory facts/figures gathered from all the presentations.

The students clearly enjoyed themselves as did the Logoplaste staff making this once again a great day for all concerned and who knows maybe a future packaging designer inspired by Logoplaste was sat in the room.

The challenge was design and model a Ribena container that replaces the current tetra carton with a straw.

GREEN HARvEST

During the holiday season, some US employees hosted food drives to benefit

Green Harvest Food Panty of Plainfield.  This local, non-profit organization provides food and personal hygiene items to working low--income families, the elderly and recently unemployed residents of Aurora, Montgo-mery, Plano, Naperville, Oswego, Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Yorkville.   In addition to donating food, some of them also helped Green Harvest by volunteering 2 hours of their time on Friday, November 8th  to pack food baskets that were distributed to needy families during the holidays.  Last year the group of 9 volunteers packed 100 boxes in less than 45 minutes!  The goal this year was to top that record that was performed.

It was a Win-Win situation:  They helped a worthy cause and got away from the office for a few hours!

During this period, a Brazilian mechanic, called Alfredo Moser, had a light-bulb moment and came up with a way of illuminating his house during the day without electricity - using nothing more than plastic bottles filled with water and a tiny bit of bleach. Sunlight gets refracted by the water in the bottle and gets scattered in every direction

Moser’s bright idea is being used in more than 15 countries and it is particularly popular in developing countries. In the Philippines, the lamps are now fitted in 140,000 homes. Some people in poor areas are using the lamps

to grow food on small hydroponic farms. The energy and money-saving invention is expected to be in one million homes by 2014.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• Add two capfuls of bleach to protect the water so it doesn’t turn green. Please note that the bottle needs to be clean;

• Wrap his face in a cloth and make a hole in a roof tile with a drill. Then, from the bottom upwards, push the bottle into the newly-made hole;

• Fix the bottle in with polyester resin. Even when it rains, the roof never leaks;

• Now you have a light with more or less 40 to 60 watts without spending any money.
