Swachh Bharat and many other DLF Goodies

The last few months were eventful for DLF Foundation as we hosted a series of activities ranging from cleanliness drives to cancer awareness camps, to flying relief supplies to flood-victims in Jammu and Kashmir.

In sync with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, DLF Foundation kicked off its Clean City Campaign in DLF city. The mission aims at complete elimination of open defecation, construction of public and community toilets, cleaning of roads and pavements and encouraging people to be cleanliness conscious.

A series of workshops were conducted for our scholars enrolled under the aegis of Nurturing Talent Programme, on relevant issues such as Sanitation, Medical Emergencies and Foul Language, at St Paul’s School and Jhankar Sr. Sec. School. Teachers have also benefitted from workshops on Innovative Teaching methods.

DLF’s skill development programme introduced life skills with hands-on training for jobs to create a holistic broad-based programme for poor young Indians nearly three years ago and is following in the footsteps of the PM’s ministry for entrepreneurship and skill development. One such prized pupil is 19-year-old Mugdha who realized her ambition of mastering computers, learning Tally and earning money while still studying at DLF’s Life skills course.

The DLF Foundation Skill Development Programme has also partnered with NSHM Udaan Skills Foundation to impart vocational/skill training to marginalized rural youth in eastern India. More power to our elbows!

The Foundation’s innovative community-based waste management and income generation programme called ‘Kachre Se Kamai’ (income from waste) in Hassanpur, Sohna, Gurgaon has many beneficiaries like Dhani Ram and his wife.

Last but not the least, DLF Foundation launched an emergency response operation for victims of the devastating floods of 7th September in Jammu and Kashmir. Over 12 tonnes of food and relief material to affected families were flown.

Annual Partners’ Meet Held

A major priority for DLF Foundation is to strengthen its partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGO), as the

Foundation sees such partnerships as the best way to ensure that the basic needs of the populations concerned are met. The DLF Foundation Cluster Development Programme Annual Partners’ meet held in DLF City on 16 October saw a gathering of top level delegates and representatives from partner NGOs and the DLF-CSR team come together and strategise about future goals based on past experiences. The meeting was a day- long event which included two focus sessions on a range of different components of CSR Rules (as per Company Act, 2013) and a presentation session which gave an insight on the progress of different projects.

Critical issues in development such as sustainable impacts of health, bridging the gap in health service and delivery, engaging policy makers in the education sector, etc were discussed in a special session that was attended by Lt. Gen. (Retd) Rajender Singh, Ambassador (Retd) Ajai Malhotra, Dr. Sunil Mehra, Mr. Ajay Sinha, among others.

The highlight of the event was the launch of the DLF Cluster Development Programme Brochure by Lt. Gen. (Retd) Rajender Singh. While providing a comprehensive overlook, the brochure covers every project of the DLF Cluster Development programme.

Swachh City Campaign launched in DLF City

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which was launched on October 2, is picking up

steam. On 9 November, DLF Foundation kicked off its Clean City Campaign.

The entire mission aims at complete elimination of open defecation, construction and maintenance of public and community toilets, municipal solid waste management, cleaning of roads and pavements and most important of all, changing the mindset of people and encouraging them to be cleanliness- conscious.

The inaugural ceremony saw enthusiastic staff and residents wielding brooms and making a pledge to keep the DLF City clean. They were seen cleaning the streets in the locality and collecting garbage for disposal.

The DLF Foundation cleanliness drive will cover the entire DLF City, including urban slums and villages. To ensure proper waste management, garbage bins will be placed at all strategic locations and garbage collection vehicles pressed into service. Waste management centres will also be set up. Public toilets will be set up as part of the campaign and a brigade of sanitation workers will assist residents in keeping the city neat and clean. Awareness sessions on cleanliness will be held in schools to instill a sense of ownership for the Clean

“Rohit Mallik, Director DEDL said, “It’s our endeavour to aim at a clean city. Just like Rahagiri, we should aim at Safaigiri too. The RWA associations can take a lead in this process. We must have toilets at various points which we should aim to keep clean. We must have toilets at various points which we should aim to keep Clean.

Under the Clean City Campaign, DLF City residents would also be able to draw water from water-ATMs as many urban slums and villages do not get piped water supply and the groundwater is unfit for consumption.

“We do not have unlimited resources but what can be unlimited is our aim; we will help to make toilets operational and take initiatives for the underprivileged classes. If our city has to be a smart city, we have to keep it clean. Cleanliness is the responsibility of all of us, not just the Government. DLF Foundation’s Clean City Campaign is an attempt to address the issue which is becoming a major challenge for the country and DLF Foundation will contribute in a big way to achieve this target,” concluded Lt Gen Rajender Singh.

The Unseen Force of Waste Management

CLUSTER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Solid waste management remains one of the major challenges in India. Improper waste disposal is found to be a major factor in the spread of diseases and environmental degradation and contributes to the poor living standards of inhabitants. For this reason, solid waste management is a very important component of the

DLF Foundation cluster development programme. In 2013, the Foundation initiated an innovative community-based waste management and income generation programme called ‘Kachre Se Kamai’ (income from waste) in Hassanpur, Sohna, Gurgaon to address the issue of sanitation. To make the system self-sustainable, the village Panchayat decided to levy nominal user charges for refuse collection. Since then three more DLF- Kachre Se Kamai Centers were opened in three different villages.

DLF Cluster Development Program has initiated a project to build local level leadership for collective behavioral change and harnessing its power in various development initiatives. In collaboration with Feedback Foundation, this project is being implemented in 5 of the village clusters. Influential natural leaders are

identified and are engaged for collective action at the grass-root level.

These identified natural leaders select topics like ‘Household Waste Segregation’, and ‘Open Defecation-Free Community’ which are used as triggers to sensitize communities and continuously engage them to actively participate which eventually leads to behavioral change of the community as a whole. In the first phase of this project, door to door triggering in the community was done in the cluster villages.

These communities will henceforth be empowered to undertake developmental initiatives single handedly, with least dependency on external partners.

Dhani Ram and his wife, who come from marginalised sections of the society, earlier worked as daily wage labourers. The poor couple made just about Rs 300 on

days they found work as daily wagers, which were few and far between. But ever since they joined ‘Kachre Se Kamai’ they have the security of a permanent income to the tune of Rs 12000 per month. Their day starts early in the morning with street sweeping, door-to door collection of waste, waste segregation and composting. Dhani Ram is paid from the kitty created with user-fee levied by the Panchayat. Being associated with the project has helped Dhani Ram send his grandchildren to school, have better assets, savings and above all, no stress to look for a daily wage engagement for the next day. The Cluster Development Programme aims to create opportunities for the underprivileged in order to facilitate a well built foundation. It facilitates integrated growth of villages and a holistic development of underprivileged communities. It also aims to transform identified cluster of villages into vibrant “Model Villages” and promotes these active, diverse and prosperous rural model villages as an easily replicable model for the development of other rural communities precisely on six major development areas: social, economic, environment, health, education and skill development.

DLF Cancer Awareness-cum-Screening Campaign

In India, cervical cancer is the most common woman-related cancer, followed by breast cancer. In the fight to halt cancer through awareness, prevention and education, DLF Foundation launched a campaign called the DLF

Cancer Awareness-Cum-Screening in collaboration with the World Healthal Trust. A series of awareness-cum-screening camps are being conducted around the village clusters of Gurgaon.

On World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the Foundation organised an awareness-cum-screening camp in a DLF Primary Health Centre. More than 200 women and girls attended the camp. High prevalence rates, causes, risk factors and symptoms for each of the two cancers were discussed. Further, DLF Foundation reached upto 2000 households through door-to-door campaigning. A special awareness camp was organised for vulnerable school girls of Sakatpur village in Gurgaon.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

DLF NSHM Udaan imparts specialized training and unmatched knowledge in beauty & wellness, hospitality, automobile industry, banking & finance, IT enabled services, retail management, soft skills and corporate etiquettes.

The programme is a result of the partnership that DLF Foundation Skill Development Programme has forged with NSHM Udaan Skills Foundation to impart vocational skills training to marginalized youth in eastern India.

The centre aims to train the underprivileged youth of Kolkata in vocational skills free of cost as they cannot afford the fancy fees of higher education. It is also in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to all Indians to upgrade their skills.

Speaking on the occasion, Director Programmes, Gayatri Paul, DLF Foundation, said, “We are inclined as always towards bringing in changes to affect lives.

The partnership envisages socio-economic transformation of the rural youth from a status of unemployment and vulnerability to a state of employability and enterprise. It aims to create vocational opportunities to the disadvantaged community in the rural areas of eastern India in consonance with market needs and demands.

With a young population and the government’s focus on skill development, India has the potential to become a leader in vocational education.”

NSHM Udaan has a network of more than 20 training centres spread across 10 cities in the country. All centres provide employment linked, market-oriented vocational training of short duration to the economically and socially marginalized youth.

With better skills come better jobs and Udaan Skill Foundation has well established market linkages with leading employers such as Godrej, HDFC Bank, Pantaloons, Lehman Brothers, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Sodexho, Rozzana Fresh, Specialty Group, Rose Valley, etc.

Earning While Learning

The Life Skills course helped 19-year-old Mugdha realise her ambition of mastering computers, learning Tally and earning money while still studying. Mugdha, a resident of Delhi, heard of the DLF Foundation’s Life Skills course from her teacher Jyoti while completing her class XII. Mugdha wanted to learn computers and enrolled in the DLF centre to learn both computers and tally. Six months later, when the course ended, she was familiar with computers and had learnt Tally. Thanking the Foundation for teaching her the course, she says, “I am happy I did the course because today I have a job and am also pursuing graduation. I earn Rs 8000 per month and am happy at the way my career is shaping up. Thank you, DLF!”

Honing the Skillset

The DLF Foundation’s Life Skills programme trained 21-year-old Himanshu Gupta as an accountant, and then helped him find a job with Karvy Data Management Services Limited where he has been working for the last two years.

The young man, who earlier held a low-paying job, enrolled himself in the life skills programme in Delhi’s Shastri Nagar to learn Tally and accounts. Accounts being his first love, Himanshu says, “The programme also sharpened my psycho-social skills in problem-solving and critical thinking, and helped me work on my personal skills such as self-awareness. With this I could place myself in a better company as an accountant.”

SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

DLF Foundation’s flagship programme “Skill a Million” has a clear mandate of linking learning with employment and has been training thousands of young people in India. Through this programme, young people will learn about economic opportunities and gain the market-ready skills to benefit from this demand. The programme aims to train and employ 1 million youth over a 10-year period by establishing skill centres across the country.

The skill centres impart need-based industry-based vocational skill training through a mix of unique models including on site earn and learn platforms. The curriculum and training modules are developed drawing on successes of international best practices but are adapted to the Indian environment. An interactive alumni network, in-house career counselling and life skills training help young people develop a better understanding of their own potential and skills before they strategise to leverage these in the changing job market.

Young people are being trained in trades such as IT, hospitality, retail, office management, construction, electronics, beauty culture and nursing in centres ranging from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to Bangalore, Chikballapur, Mullanpur, Indore, Bulundshahr, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Sanand and Chandoliya.

“ Sometimes, new opportunities for education can substantially change a poor child’s life forever. Sonu Yadav, is one such example. He approached

DLF Foundation when he was in class IV. At that time Sonu was about to drop out of school as his poor cobbler father could no longer afford his education.

Under DLF’s Nurturing Talent Programme, a scholarship exam was held for poor children studying in government schools. Sonu not only cleared the exam but also scored 78% and got admission in St Paul’s school in class VIth. The highly meritorious scholar was awarded with DLF’s Nurturing Talent Scholarship programme, which has helped him excel in school and sports. The scholarship covers the cost of Sonu’s school education including

Voice of a DLF Sahyog Volunteer: My time with DLF Sahyog was very rewarding. It helped me to integrate with the community rather than making me a mere spectator. The children, who are between the ages of 10 and 14, were great and had tremendous energy. My task was to motivate them, lift their morale and become their friend, philosopher and guide. Discussions were held regarding their home work, sports, family pressure and peer stories. Thank you DLF for organizing this programme. I will recommend my colleagues to join this volunteering programme for life changing experiences.

Voice of the parent of a DLF Scholar: “After getting the scholarship, there has been a remarkable change in the communication skills of my child. I have seen a newfound sense of self awareness in him and his interest towards studies has improved. I would really like to thank the entire DLF Foundation team who gave my child a platform to feel special and achieve something in life.”

Foul or Fair: Workshop for DLF Scholars on ‘Foul Language’ Conducted at St. Paul’s School

The unchecked flow of student foul language in a school setting does not occur without consequences. Foul and demeaning language aimed specifically at a person or group is a form of social

and verbal abuse. Such language and expressions can trigger physical fights, harass, demean, coerce, or bully, chip away at the overall order, discipline and dignity of the campus, promote an insidious campaign of intolerance and hate. In view of the growing rudeness and disrespect, a session on Life Skills was held for 90 St Paul’s School scholars on ‘Foul Language is not cool’. The agenda of the session was to identify from the group the reasons for using foul language;

to help students understand the impact it has on their expression; to discuss the benefits of not using foul language; to break the myth that using foul language is cool; and to break the notion that it is easier to connect with people of the same age group by using foul language.

The students at St. Paul’s were active, interactive and enthusiastic throughout the session.Session on ‘Foul language is not cool’

Launched in 2011 for the upliftment of the meritorious underprivileged students, DLF Foundation’s flagship programme ‘Nurturing Talent Programme’ awards scholarships, identifies talent and nurtures students to become responsible citizens. The programme covers school children from class 1 to undergraduate and subsequently post graduate courses. The school scholarships enable marginalized children from villages and slums to make the shift to access quality education in selected private English medium schools. While, the Graduate Scholarship Scheme covers a large number of disciplines including medicine, engineering, IT, management, Fine Arts and Sports. What’s more? The Student Guidance Centre provides need based and individualised coaching, guidance and mentoring services for nurturing talents of all our scholars. textbooks, study materials and transport from home. Sonu also receives Rs.3000 every year under the scholarship to manage his overhead study expenses.

Sonu scored 90% in his annual examination in class VII and also scored a whopping 98 out of 100 in Mathematics. He has won many awards in various competitions in his school. He wants to become a Computer Science engineer and knows that DLF can help him achieve his goal.

Sonu’s father Raghunandan Yadav, says “Like other low income parents I, too, was overwhelmed by diminished self-esteem, depression, and a sense of powerlessness and inability to cope but the programme has touched and changed Sonu’s life who otherwise would have found it extremely difficult to pursue his dreams.” While, a confident and beaming Sonu says, “Through the DLF Foundation Nurturing Talent Programme, I was able to gain more confidence. My academic and

interpersonal skills improved tremendously through various programmes introduced by the DLF Foundation in my school. Some of the programmes that I participate in are PTA meetings, Annual Scholar meets, One-to-One Counseling sessions and talks by inspirational leaders in the school premises.” DLF is proud of this prized pupil!

Workshop on Innovative Teaching Methods for Teachers of Jhankar Sr Secondary School & St Paul’s School

The monotony of teaching can be broken with innovative teaching methods. And these methods were discussed in workshops organised by DLF

Foundation to make teachers aware of ways to introduce fun and originality in the classroom. 40 teachers of Jhankar Sr Secondary School and 10 teachers of St Paul’s School participated.

The fact that 75% of a child’s personality is developed by the age of 13 or 14 shows that teacher has a great influence on the life of students and every statement of a teacher has the potential to make or break the self-confidence of the student. Corporal punishment and its consequences on a child’s behaviour were discussed and teachers agreed that it creates a total disconnect.

Fun exercises to know themselves better were organised for the teachers. In one of the exercises, they were asked to write maximum uses of an empty bottle. While they agreed there were many uses of it, the crux of the activity was to understand the effectiveness of a student when a teacher assigns tasks.

“Workshop on Sanitation” conducted for Jhankar School Students

Students learning the importance of cleanliness...

Cleanliness is next to godliness - an aphorism indicates that cleanliness is endowed with a moral quality. Cleanliness contributes to ideals such as

health and beauty. But on a practical level cleanliness is related to hygiene and disease prevention. It was in this context that a workshop was conducted for our 110 scholars studying at Jhankar School on 10 October in the school premises.

Workshop for DLF Scholars on ‘Medical Emergencies’ at Jhankar School

Children and adults might experience medical emergency situations because of injuries, complications of chronic health conditions, or unexpected major illnesses that occur in schools. In this context, VIVO Healthcare & DLF Foundation conducted an emergency medical response awareness programme at Jhankar Public School,

Shikohapur on 11th October 2014 to help students develop basic first aid knowledge, skills, and the confidence to respond. School Principal Harender Kumar was present and appreciated the inputs provided to the students and

parents during the Parent Teacher Meeting.

During the seminar, a trainer from VIVO Healthcare shared first aid tips for common medical emergencies and broke many myths. Fainting is very common among school children, especially during assembly hours. The trainer clarified that water must never be given when the child is unconscious, as it can enter the wind pipe and the child can choke.

Details of skill development programmes leading to jobs in healthcare were shared. Class XI and XII students could do these courses over weekends so that they could find work soon after graduation. Details of emergency medical technician and dialysis technician programmes were also shared during the workshop.

Workshop on medical emergencies in progress...

The scholars were urged to see cleanliness as an essential virtue and practice it on a daily basis. They were urged to take pride in their turnout and also take ownership for cleanliness of public places. They promised to keep their surroundings such as their homes, schools and neighbourhoods clean. The students were not only advised to practice it themselves but also ensure that others in the community worked towards creating a clean society.

The students were forthcoming with their suggestions and were also emphatic about the pro-active role they would henceforth play in doing their bit to work towards creating a clean environment. They vowed to take ownership of the public areas just as they do for their homes and collectively work towards a Swachh Bharat.

DLF Foundation Provides Aid to J&K Flood Victims- Sends 12 Tonnes of Relief Supplies, Doctors and Paramedics

DLF Foundation launched an emergency response

operation for the victims of the devastating floods of 7 September in Jammu and Kashmir. The Foundation directly intervened in the affected areas and contacted the Indian Air Force and the Army for help to transport over 12 tonnes of food and relief material to the affected families. In addition, the Foundation sent a team of doctors, paramedics and DLF staff, who held medical camps in the severely damaged areas. The relief supplies, which were sent in two batches on 12 September and 15 September, contained food items like biscuits, bread and namkeens, packaged drinking water, milk powder, bread, roasted gram, blankets, torches, life saving

and hygiene kits, among others.

One of the first corporates to react to the Jammu and Kashmir floods by rushing food relief supplies and medical aid, the DLF group has once again proven that it is firmly committed to active philanthropy and stands by its social commitment of providing immediate relief to victims of disaster. “J&K is still a national priority and we will continue to support the victims through the difficult rebuilding period ahead. The people of the state will continue to have a friend and partner in DLF Foundation,” said Lt Gen Rajender Singh, the CEO of DLF Foundation.

The DLF group worked in solidarity with the Indian armed forces and other agencies working in the flood relief for their unstinting efforts in mitigating the disaster. Lt Gen Singh further added that they would never be found wanting in their

commitment to help the needy and distressed communities. While speaking about the emergency response, Ms Gayatri Paul, Director – Programmes, DLF Foundation, said, “In an effort to assist victims of severe flooding, we have sent a team of doctors, paramedics and DLF staff and are regularly holding medical camps.”

It may be recalled that during the Uttarakhand floods too, DLF Foundation had made generous contributions in cash and kind for the relief and rehabilitation of the victims. All the DLF employees had contributed their one month salary with a matching contribution from the company to the PM Relief Fund. Besides this, their medical teams had also gone to Uttarakhand to provide medical assistance.
