EDITORIAL BOARD “Every great and worthy human accomplishment which finds engraved in letters of gold in the pages

of history depicting human civilization and progress, was in the first instance sprouted as a mere

thought or conceived just as an idea by someone”.

It is the profound sense of gratitude and immense pleasure that we place in the hands of our well-

wishers, friends and benefactors, this Year Book. We have always felt as students of this great

institution we should always endeavour to make mark in the college’s prestigious history. INSPIRE

provided us with such an opportunity.

Our modest endeavour to bring out this Year Book this year is born out of enthusiasm to provide the

students an opportunity to discover their dormant talents and to give vent to their feelings and

imaginations and also exhibit their creativity. This little idea of a magazine became a reality entirely

due to the enthusiastic response from the students. The content of this magazine covers a range of

topics which are informative, thought provoking, humorous, and imaginative.

The event, the activities shall constantly remind us of the blessings and guidance rendered by our

faculty members. We are forever thankful for the support and encouragement of seniors, friends and

juniors.

As you turn the pages of this book we hope you relive the same excitement and exhilaration as we felt

on the giant roller coaster ride that was INSPIRE.

A heartfelt thanks to all the contributors of articles and coordinators and most appropriately all the

generous hearts, without whose support, we could not have undertaken this monumental work.

As a team, we dedicate INSPIRE to the well wishing and beloved seniors 2013-2017 batch, who here

been the strength and are part of its plans and actions, guiding throughout their times with us. We

expect the same guiding, cooperation and support from them throughout their lives.

ALL THE BEST.......

What Are Developers' Views on AI?

ARTICLE:I don’t get to write code much

these days. Once upon a time, I spent all

day coding, compiling, and debugging

within an IDE, poring over

documentation, or trawling through

developer forums to find out if anyone

else has ever seen and resolved the

latest weird compile error that’s

blocking my path.

Time moves on, though — I’m sure that

today’s developers, working in a

comparative industry and location,

would say things are much the same.

There’s a big world out there beyond my

limited experience, however, and I find

it fascinating to get insight from a global

spectrum of developers via various

surveys and reports on the resulting

data.

Here are some of the recent reports that

are interesting to those studying

developer attitudes to AI.

The Siri Syndrome: Why Companies

Don't Dive Into AI and Chatbots

ARTICLE:According to Gartner, 90% of

enterprises are investing in chatbots,

but only 4% have them up and running.

The main reason for this is a

misconception on what chatbot

intelligence actually is. Our ultimate test

of a chatbot intelligence has become a

simple question: What's the

weather? Clearly a Siri Syndrome.

How many times have you called your

General Practitioner to book an

appointment and midway through the

conversation you asked: What's the

weather? The odds are not very high.

Building chatbots with NativeChat for

some of the biggest healthcare and

financial institutions, we are observing

an interesting phenomenon. People are

often "testing" and "judging" the

intelligence of a chatbot midway

through a conversation by asking a

series of unrelated questions such

as: What's the weather? How old are you?

What time is it? What are you? Who is

your master? How much is 1+2?

Using Machine Learning to Mine

Complex Datasets

ARTICLE:It's widely recognized that the

rising power of AI is largely driven by

the increase in data available to train

the algorithms. In the Big Data Era, the

quantity of data is seldom the issue, but

being able to successfully analyze it is

often much harder.

New research from the Department of

Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National

Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and UC

Berkeley uses machine learning to

enable scientists to derive insights from

incredibly complex datasets in record

time.

What I Think About Machines That

Think

ARTICLE:Humans are dramatic.We

overreact — to everything. Perhaps our

default evolutionary response to things

Page 40: EDITORIAL BOARD - chalapathiengg.ac.in › magzine › 2017-18.pdf · EDITORIAL BOARD “Every great and worthy human accomplishment which finds engraved in letters of gold in the

that are new, things we don’t

understand, is to fear it.

When we have almost all of the smartest

minds on the planet talking about the

same issues, the rest of us are bound to

get concerned about it. The concerns

regarding the threat the AI poses to

humanity have a long history. For

instance, Stephen Hawking was once

quoted saying: "The development of

full artificial intelligence could spell

the end of the human race."

Such frequent claims against deep

learning fuels the mass hysteria that AI

is going to steal everyone’s jobs, start

the next world war, or even take over

the world and wipe our species out. And

the flood of dystopian movies

(like AI, The Matrix, Her, or I, Robot),

with their anti-technology themes, that

are constantly being churned out is not

helping. We need to set a few

misconceptions right.

Exploring the Impact of Automation

on Jobs

ARTICLE:Predictions about the impact

of new technologies on the labor market

are a seemingly daily occurrence after

Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne

burst the dam with their original report

back in 2013.

If you read most of these papers,

perhaps the only thing that they have in

common is that most are guessing in a

big way. The estimated impact varies

considerably from paper to paper, with

no real consensus emerging.

Does a recent report from the OECD do

any better? Its methodology builds upon

that of Frey and Osborne, but they not

only broaden the scope to include all

countries that complete the Survey of

Adult Skills (PIAAC), they also

disaggregate occupational

classifications. It also attempts to go

beyond merely looking at the number of

jobs that might be lost to also explore

the number of jobs whose tasks might

be fundamentally altered by

automation.

MachineX: Layman's Guide to

Association Rule Learning

ARTICLE:Association rule learning is

one of the most common techniques in

data mining as well as machine learning.

The most common use, which I'm sure

you're aware of, is the recommendation

systems used by various e-shops like

Amazon, Flipkart, etc.

Association rule learning is a technique

to uncover the relationship between

various items, elements, or various

variables in a very large database.

Building an analogy with the above

examples of e-shops, it is the

relationship between different items on

the website. Association rule learning

tells us that if a user buys, say, a book,

how likely is it that he will buy another

book, where these two books are related

because other users have bought them

both. Let me be more clear by giving you

an example. Suppose you want to learn

Scala, so you decide to go to Amazon

and buy Scala Cookbook. When you

open up the webpage and scroll down a

little, you see this

How AI Can Lead to Smarter Cities

ARTICLE:Much of the "management"

side of companies such as Uber is done

by algorithms that determine pricing

and distribution of drivers on behalf of

passengers. A recent study suggests that

AI can be used to predict the demand for

taxi and ride-sharing services as a

whole, leading to a safer, smarter, and

more sustainable cities.

The paper documents the creation of

two types of neural networks that were

set to work analyzing the demand for

taxis in a city. Once the algorithms had

been trained on this data, they were

able to accurately predict future

demand patterns with a higher degree

of accuracy than existing technology.

A New Way to Compare and

Reorganize Data

ARTICLE:In real-world daily business

routines, it is common that data that

comes from different sources is of the

same structure. Sometimes, each set of

data is independent and there isn’t any

overlapping, like the sales data each

branch office exports from their own

database. Other times, data overlaps

heavily. In a common complete business

process, it is most probable that all

systems and sections input data based

on their store of data. To compare the

overlapped data and find and correct

the possible corrupt data, we need the

auto-reconciliation operation.

Lightsail

ARTICLE:Progress DataDirect Hybrid

Data Pipeline is an innovative data

access service for enterprises and cloud

ISVs that is designed to simplify and

streamline data integration between

cloud, mobile, and on-premises sources

through a secure, firewall-friendly

integration. It is a transformative

Mocking JDBC Using a Set of SQL

String/Result Pairs

ARTICLE:I showed how the

programmatic MockDataProvider can be

used to mock the entire JDBC API

through a single functional interface:

// context contains the SQL string and

bind variables, etc.

MockDataProvider provider = context ->

{

// This defines the update counts,

result sets, etc.

// depending on the context above.

Page 42: EDITORIAL BOARD - chalapathiengg.ac.in › magzine › 2017-18.pdf · EDITORIAL BOARD “Every great and worthy human accomplishment which finds engraved in letters of gold in the

return new MockResult[] { ... }

};

Writing the provider manually can be

tedious in some cases, especially when a

few static SQL strings need to be

mocked and constant result sets would

be OK. In that case,

the MockFileDatabase is a convenient

implementation that is based on a text

file (or SQL string), which contains a set

of SQL string/result pairs of the form:

SQL string

Result set

Update count

How to Hide an Instance of SQL

Server

ARTICLE:When you launch SQL Server

Management Studio (SSMS), you see the

option to connect to an instance. If

desired, you have the ability to browse

instances running on your network. Just

click on the drop-down and at the

bottom, there is a Browse for

more… option:

This allows you to browse for local or

network instances. I have four instances

running on my laptop. You can see them

displayed in this list:
