It marks the second major divestiture by the parent company Madison Filtration SA - it disposed of its Madison Oil 6 Gas division, which comprised United Wire and South West Wire Cloth, in September. Madison Filter was created by a management buyout of Scapa’s Specialty Materials division in 1999, funded by a European venture capital enterprise. According to Madison, it was always the intention to find a well-matched buyer, and Gamma Holding certainly fits the bill. Madison Filter has a strategic fit with two of the company’s Gamma Technologies businesses [Verseidag Techfab and Industrial Fabrics Corp). Interestingly there is little product overlap between the three companies, so the general mood appears to be postitive towards the deal. There is no getting away from the fact that the world’s supply of potable water is diminishing, and that it is one of the major drivers of technological developments in water and wastewater treatment. This issue we feature a recently completed study by German market analyst Helmut Kaiser Consultancy, which predicts the growth rates of individual segments of the world’s water industry and how the water industry itself will change over the next 1 Cl 2 years. The use of RO to treat water and wastewater is growing, as its costs come down. However, what many forget when designing a RO system is the importance of including an effective pre-treatment method. Simon Gare of Ecolochem International Inc weighs up the pros and cons of physical and chemical pre-treatments, and highlights some of the factors that need to be taken into account when choosing the correct pre-treatment system. I hope most of you have noticed the difference in the magazine’s lay out. Yes, to mark the beginning of 2002 Filtration+Separation has undergone a make-over. Well, if you can do it to your house, your garden or even yourself, why not a magazine? I cannot promise that a world famous designer was involved, but we hope you like the changes.
