Editorial The Seventh European Conference on Fire Retardant Polymers continued the highly successful series previously held in St Denis and Lille (France), Turin (Italy), Freiburg (Germany) and Salford (UK) and, like its predecessors, provided a forum for both fundamental and applied scientific and technical exchanges in this multidisciplinary field. The programme was divided into several sessions, each with a particular theme and consisting of an appropriate plenary lecture and invited lectures, which were supported by contributed oral papers and posters. The themes were Mechanisms, Techniques and Applications; Nanocomposites and Intumescents; Phosphorus-based Flame Retardants; Applications of Flame Retardants; and Synthesis and Characterization. Plenary lectures were given by C Di Blasi (Naples, Italy) Modelling physical and chemical processes of charring solid degradation for applications in fire retardancy; RE Lyon (Federal Aviation Administration [FAA], USA) Solid state thermochemistry of flaming combustion; GE Zaikov (Moscow, Russia) Intercalated and sorbed flame retardants – new frontiers; T Kashiwagi (National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST], USA) Polymer combustion and Si-based flame retardants; E Mikkola (Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus [National Research Centre of Finland, VTT], Finland) Fire retardants and product behaviour in fire tests, and JR Ebdon (Sheffield, UK) Improving the flame retardance of plastics by the chemical incorporation of phosphorus-containing groups. The social programme provided for relaxation together with plenty of opportunity for informal discussions, many of which will lead to innovative collaborations in the future. Some 140 delegates from 15 countries attended the conference. This issue of Polymer International presents 24 articles representative of the work of the conference. The Seventh European Conference on Fire Retardant Polymers continued the

highly successful series previously held in St Denis and Lille (France), Turin

(Italy), Freiburg (Germany) and Salford (UK) and, like its predecessors, provided

a forum for both fundamental and applied scienti®c and technical exchanges in

this multidisciplinary ®eld. The programme was divided into several sessions,

each with a particular theme and consisting of an appropriate plenary lecture and

invited lectures, which were supported by contributed oral papers and posters.

The themes were Mechanisms, Techniques and Applications; Nanocomposites

and Intumescents; Phosphorus-based Flame Retardants; Applications of Flame

Retardants; and Synthesis and Characterization. Plenary lectures were given by

C Di Blasi (Naples, Italy) Modelling physical and chemical processes of charring soliddegradation for applications in ®re retardancy; RE Lyon (Federal Aviation

Administration [FAA], USA) Solid state thermochemistry of ¯aming combustion;

GE Zaikov (Moscow, Russia) Intercalated and sorbed ¯ame retardants ± newfrontiers; T Kashiwagi (National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST],

USA) Polymer combustion and Si-based ¯ame retardants; E Mikkola (Valtion

Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus [National Research Centre of Finland, VTT],

Finland) Fire retardants and product behaviour in ®re tests, and JR Ebdon (Shef®eld,

UK) Improving the ¯ame retardance of plastics by the chemical incorporation ofphosphorus-containing groups. The social programme provided for relaxation

together with plenty of opportunity for informal discussions, many of which will

lead to innovative collaborations in the future.

Some 140 delegates from 15 countries attended the conference. This issue of

Polymer International presents 24 articles representative of the work of the

conference.

The Eighth European Fire Retardant Polymers Conference will be held in

Alessandria, Italy, 24±27 June, 2001. Further details will be available from the

conference chairman, Professor Giovanni Camino [email protected].
