THE FLYING CARPET THIEF Author: Sally GardnerPublisher: London: Orion Children’s Books, 2017Call no.: Junior Lending Simple Fiction English GAR

Trouble is afoot at the Wings & Co fairy detective agency. Fidget the cat has disappeared on a secret mission, while detective Emily Vole has been dragged away on another adventure. The fairy keys, which Emily looks after, have vanished as well.

Meanwhile in the village of Podgy Bottom, a mysterious stranger comes with a fantastic offer to trade new oriental carpets for old. There’s also a missing leprechaun, a runaway genie and a stolen magic carpet to deal with! Most worrying of all is the Fairy Queen, whose light is fading away quickly, but who cannot travel to get her wings restored without said magic carpet. Can the team at Wings & Co solve the various mysteries and save the Queen in time?

Readers will find themselves hooked to this exciting and fast-paced story from the Wings & Co series, while Gardner’s wordplay and David Roberts’ wacky illustrations bring the characters and their mannerisms to life.

ALICE JONES: THE GHOST LIGHT Author: Sarah RubinPublisher: Frome, Somerset: Chicken House, 2017Call no.: Junior Lending English RuB

In her latest adventure, child detective Alice Jones and her sidekick Kevin must get to the bottom of a spate of bizarre happenings at the century-old Beryl Theatre, where actors have recently been spooked by several supernatural incidents.

More eerie still is the mystery behind the titular ghost light, which serves to placate the souls of former actors. Just days before the Beryl’s grand re-opening, the light has somehow been snuffed out. Could there be vengeful spirits lurking around, seeking to settle ancient scores?

Although she is adamant that ghosts do not exist, Alice has a tough case ahead, even with her superior sleuthing skills. As Alice digs deeper into the Beryl’s shadowy past, she unearths a secret that could provide a rather unexpected answer…

Brilliant and sassy, the character of Alice is fast capturing the hearts of young readers who are fans of the sleuth genre, and this second title in the series certainly does not disappoint. Rubin has crafted a worthy sequel that will keep fans glued to every chapter.

RAISIN, THE LITTLEST COWAuthor: Miriam BuschPublisher: York, nY: Balzer + Bray, 2017Call no.: Junior Lending Picture Book English BuS

For the longest time, Raisin has enjoyed being the littlest cow in the herd and basking in all the attention from the bigger cows. But now her mother has had another baby - one even smaller than Raisin herself! Since then, nothing has been the same…

Raisin has never liked changes, but it seems like her new baby brother is here to stay. How will she learn to live with him? Will she ever get the attention she once received? Or can she learn to adjust to her new life, and somehow find happiness again?

An adorable story about learning to welcome a new family member, Miriam Busch handles the subjects of sibling rivalry and accepting life changes deftly and with humour.
