The 10th Anniversary of Bring a Friend Sunday, September 19

Now is the time to begin inviting friends and fam-ily to the 10th annual Bring a Friend Sunday. The church promises you an uplifting service

of worship and song. Besides, what can be better than to invite a friend to share God’s message to all.

There are cards available in the back of the church complete with postage stamps to assist you with your invitations. Please make use of them. They are an effective tool at your disposal.

Secondly, we have arranged for a marvelous full course lunch for members and guests alike after the 10:30am service. The meal is completely free, but we would like each of you to bring your favorite dessertjust before the service to insure that it is placed just right.

Thirdly, we will be giving a small or mini loaf of bread to all visitors. If any of you can make a few loaves and bring them to the church on Friday, September 17, or Saturday, September 18 it will be appreciated.

Lastly, please pray for this important day in the life of the parish. Many people who are now integral mem-bers of Epiphany first came on Bring a Friend Sunday. May God bless our effort.

Both are held upstairs. We will be using the "Weaving God's Promises" curriculum, which is a new curriculum written by an Episcopal priest. We look forward to seeing your children each week.

Also, mark your calendars for Oct 27th when we will be having the fun filled Fall Festival.

My Dear Parish Family,

God is so good. Each day is full of opportunities for us to explore, grapple with, and even sometimes understand. These past weeks have been filled with ups on downs. The reality of Jennifer heading to St. Martin’s has come home. I miss her and I know each of you do also, but the ministry of Epiphany is vibrant and exciting. Our ministry, thankfully, is more focused on God than on personalities and new and fresh ideas crop up each and every day. I believe a new energy has surfaced at Epiphany. This energy has begun to bring new growth in numbers, ideas, and in the ever expanding programs which we offer.

While there is much that will change with Jennifer leaving, I feel positively energized by the number of people who have stepped in to assist our parish ministry in amazing ways. I can honestly say that I am excited about

what lies ahead for this parish in the near future. Thank God we are a healthy parish, strong, and growing in our faith and ministry.

In September we have many oppor-tunities for each of us to plug in. Rally Day will be innovative and fresh. New ideas are going to be utilized by both our youth and adults. Our Coffee Hour after the 10:30 service will be something you will not want to miss as it includes the Taste of Epiphany.

This year marks the 10th Anniver-sary of Bring a Friend Sunday. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to fill the church up that Sunday? What a testament to our growing strength and commitment to our Lord.

Much more is planned. Read all about it in this issue of our Newslet-ter. You’ll see for yourself the reason to be excited.

As you enter the church and proceed down the hallway, I have placed a small framed quote that was discovered at Carol Jean Rives’ home. We believe it was printed by Doris Benson but kept by Carol Jean for years and years to keep her mindful of whom she was. It simply says that “YOU are the only Christ that some people will ever see!” I placed it at the entrance into the church to remind us of who and what we are. Within each of us lives our God. God lives within us to enlighten not only us but our neighbors that surround us seeking to discover the Christ that lives within them. This short little verse has the possibility to remind us, each time we enter the church to worship, that we can change and renew our lives. That is precisely why it is there.

Peace and Blessing,

Bill

Interested in Joining the Episcopal Church,or learning more about it?

Beginning Sunday, September 26th, during the 9:30am Sunday School class, Father Bill will be teaching an Inquirer’s Class. The class leads up to Confirmation or Reception when the Bishop comes on his Annual Visit, January 9th. Of course, any one can take the class as a refresher or just for the fun of it. The class will be taught until just before Christmas. There are no spot quizzes or exams so there is no way you can fail. Everyone gets a gold star. You will learn fascinating things such as who founded the Angli-can Church (our sister church in England) Henry the Eighth, or Elizabeth the First, or maybe it was just a God thing? Why do we stand up, kneel, and sit down all the time? Why do we have communion every week? Why didn’t the Episcopal Church split during the Civil War like every other major protestant denomination? What in the world is the Church calendar? I guarantee we will answer all the church related questions that keep you up at night! Plan now to come to this intriguing and fun class. We will meet upstairs in the EFM room above Sanderson Hall (fellowship hall).

“THE ONE WHO SINGS, PRAYS TWICE”

Epiphany is blessed to have a group of dedicated singers and musicians that lead us in worship every Sunday and Feast Day throughout the year. We offer our God-given talents to praise and thank Him for all His goodness to us. This is a vital ministry. We would like to invite you to join us in this ministry. Knowing that “life” happens and one may not be able to participate at every rehearsal or worship every Sunday…that’s okay. You are welcome. There are two rehearsals per week, Wednesday evenings at 6:30 and Sunday mornings at 9:15. In this way, if you wish to participate in any of the Christian Education opportunities, you can still make a rehearsal. Kay and Velma have already chosen the Advent and Christmas music and new voices will be wonderful. Come and join us beginning September 15th at 6:30! If you have any questions, please contact Kay Benefield or Velma Atkins or any choir member.

Church Security

We have a beautiful church and it is a shame we have to worry about someone else breaking in and/or stealing from us, but this is a different world than we knew years ago when we left our house and car unlocked.

We, some weeks ago, had two different instances of money being stolen from one of our parishioners, one time, it Appears, during a Sunday morning service! We think nothing about leaving our valuables lying around, because we would never suspect that someone would steal from us—in a church. We have had to start locking the office when there is no one inside there.

We find doors (both outside and inside) unlocked when there is no one at the church. The outside door near the office was found unlocked this past Saturday. We have to make sure the building is secure when we each leave. If you unlock a door, you should make sure you lock it upon leaving. If you are there by yourself or a small meeting, I would suggest you lock the door behind you when you enter. We occasionally have people walk in off the street and wander around in the church. For your safety and security you need to keep the doors locked.

If you have a reason to leave your valuables unguarded while at church (choir, vesting and etc.) please make arrangements to lock them in a closet during the service.

When leaving at night, make sure you verify the last person is in their car and headed out of the parking lot before you leave.

Always verify that doors are not only locked but also latched when you leave. We have had several doors left unlocked in the past few of weeks.

Of course, we also need for you to readjust the thermostats when you leave, if you changed them when you arrived. Regular service temperatures are preset and will reset automatically. Last month our electrical bill was twice what it was the month before.

Please help us keep our church safe, secure and economical.

Thanks,

Hollis Babb Property Warden

Each candidate for vestry and convention needs to get a bio to Rusty Ogden in the office. Matters of interest in the bio are where you were born, how long a member of the church, what service you attend, and what activities you have participated in since becoming a member of Epiphany. This information will be handed out to the parish in suitable places. Rusty will use your directory picture with the bio. Please have information to Rusty as soon as possible but no later than Sunday, October 17. Failure to do this will not mean that a person can’t run for vestry but that they will go into the election without information being given to the parish which might hurt their chances.

What You May Not Know

About EpiphanyQuestion: What does this mean in the bulletin?Altar Guild: Kelly Auman, Susan Foster, Sharon Clay

There are five Altar Guild teams, one for each Sunday of the month. (some months have a 5th Sunday)

1st person prepares the hymn board and altar for Sunday’s 8am service and puts out the 8am bulletins.

2nd person cleans up after the 8am service, resets the altar, places the crosses, torches, bread and wine in preparation for the processional and offering and puts out the bulletins for the 10:30am service.

3rd person cleans up after the 10:30am service, clears the hymn board, makes sure the crosses and torches are put back in their proper place at the altar and covers the altar with a dust cover for it’s protection.

Blessing of the AnimalsBy Rusty Ogden

On October 3 we will honor St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals by blessing our beloved pets. The service and blessing takes place at 2:00 p.m. on the lawn of the church.

This year each pet with a collar will receive a special tag with a prayer.

We have blessed all sorts of critters, so no matter what species your best friends may be, bring them to receive God’s blessing. Please have them leashed, tethered or caged.

I have to say that this is my favorite service at Epiphany. It is not only a time to show off a special member of your family, it is a time to show your pet how much you love them.

We bless all creatures, great and small.
