CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

As is usual in this issue, my remarks are put back 0'1

to page 2 to make way for the notice of the AnnualGeneral Meeting. With our greatly increased member-ship this year I look for a much better attendance thanin the past. So many people turn their backs. in theframe of mind that the A.G.M. is just for the Officersand no concern of theirs. This is your chance to comeand elect the people you wish to Tun YOUR Associationfor the coming year. After the formal business you willbe able to ask questions and air your views on any topicof local interest.

The Association receives many requests and corn-pliants during the year which are of a purely personalnature from members and others. If we were to dealwith all these we should require a full-time Secretary

, doing nothing else and that is not possible for a sub-scription of 2s. per annum. Our invariable reply insuch matters is to direct the enquirer where he mayobtain accurate information or to whom he should makehis complaint. When such measures fail or a matter isignored or affects sufficient people to become a localissue then the Association goes into action. One other

fact emerges very frequently. People seem loth to puttheir facts in writing to authorities; so often verbal Of'

telephone messages get forgotten or distorted out ofrecognition but a letter enables studied consideration to

-.be given to facts and few dare destroy a written corn- •munication of which the writer has a copy.

I

Now and again I hear it said that the Association"does nothing for Croxley" but a look at the matterswhich occupy your Committee's attention through theyear soon nails that thought. I would remind membersthat when the rates were last considered Mr. Armson(then a Councillor) put forward a proposal whereby theCouncil could save a Id. or 2d. of the rate increase.Although this proposal did not bear fruit no other repre-sentative of the ratepayers of any party was willingto take such a line. We did try.

In conclusion, I look forward to a year when theAssociation will rise to greater strength through the unityof purpose of its members and Committee. If CroxleyGreen is not to lapse into the stupor which overtakesso many dormitory areas around London we must fosterthe community spirit amongst us as much as possibleand that means doing something about it yourself. notleaving it to the next man. So let the year 1964/5 beone in which we are proud to live in Croxley Green andone in which you and I played our part to make it abetter and brighter place.

Yours truly,B. W. GARDNER_

CROXLEY HALL WOODS

When tree felling started recently in these woodsnumerous complaints reached the Association, who tooklip the matter with the Council. As a result, a meetingwas arranged which took place in the woods onAugust 17th last. The purpose was "to inform aresponsible body of people of what was happening sothat the information could be disseminated and thusavoid further criticism." This meeting was attended bythe Council's advisers and consultants on woodlands, amember of H.M. Forestry Commission, the Chairman ofthe Council, the Chairman of the Open Spaces Com-mittee, other Councillors and Council officials, and abody of lay representatives, mostly members of theAssociation's Committee. It was explained that the'policy being followed in these woods was a deliberatecompromise between running them as a commercialproject to produce timber and as an open space amenity. The work now going on is a first stage and consists ofremoval. et saleable timber and the clearing of a fewareas so that re-seeding without replanting can takeplace. When this is completed no further action willbe taken for two years when the second phase ofthinning out and clearing of the dead wood and diseasedtrees will begin.
